As Lenneth set foot on the training grounds each and every White Fang spared a short moment in their own fight to throw her a glance. It wasn’t that uncommon that somebody who wanted to join them would come over and give their training a look. It was however uncommon, for this to be a girl. Not that the White Fangs had no women amongst their ranks, at the moment there were even two women training amongst the men. One of them was in the process off dodging arrows that were being shot by a companion while the other was practicing her dagger on a training doll.

Brandon had woken up at 8 o’clock like everybody else. He had put on his clothes, made sure everything was pulled tight and last but not least he had pulled the deck from under his pillow and tucked it in his coat. He had also pulled out a large ring from his closet and pulled his hair trough it so that now it hung from his back in a long tail. He always wore it like that when he was about to engage in serious combat or a difficult spar. That’s why a few White Fangs looked up when they saw him walking around like that.

At about 9 o’clock Brandon finally finished dinner, he hadn’t eaten much and stuck to the light food. A few pieces of bread with cheese had been enough to fill his stomach. Afterwards he had been casually wondering around the halls, spending time as best as he could. Normally he would be out training like the rest of them or out in to town. He however didn’t want to waist energy on those things, he respected Lenneth too much for that.

So at 10 o’clock Brandon stepped out off the halls and on to the training grounds. A quick study showed him that there was only one sparring square free, at the far end off the grounds. He also saw Lenneth hiding in the shadows and grinned as he made a sign for her to follow him. With a confident step and subtle grace he walked trough the training grounds, smiling and nodding towards a few people, waving away questions. He stopped in the centre of the square, each side was about 10m long. Here and there a lose brick stood out. Brandon waited for Lenneth to approach him and took command when she did.

“Good morning, I take it you got a good nights rest. The rules are very simple, the first one to put the other in a pinned situation wins. Stepping out off the square is an automated loss and drawing blood is prohibited. Well, drawing a significant amount of blood, a small cut never hurt anybody. Oh, and before I forget, never execute an attack your opponent can’t handle, this is a sparring match, so the idea is too learn, not to win.”

"I understand and a good morning to you as well," Lenneth said and stood sideways so that Brandon's target would be smaller. With deliberate slowness, Lenneth pulled out her sword and let it dangle on her side, her fist limp and almost looked unguarded. The familiar feeling on her hand slowed her heartbeat and finally, she could actually see things for the way they were. At the moment, she was far too tense.

Don't overdo it Lenneth, she thought as her thumb felt the smooth black handle of her sword and fought her instincts to quickly kill her enemy, it's just a sparring match. This is not like those battles against those bandits.

"And yes, I did sleep well. I certainly hope you did too because you're certainly going to need it today," she said and tightened her grip on her precious Chernobog. There was no harm in a little revenge for last night's taunting.

She narrowed her eyes at Brandon. Outside the sparring area, there were already several White Fangs who were attracted to the unusual sight. Lenneth was blind to them all. The only thing on her mind was how Brandon would move and how she would begin. She raised her free hand and covered her mouth before she spoke the incantation to awaken her weapon.

"Lupa," Lenneth whispered and Chernobog came to life. It's simple blade changed colors. Instead of the normal iron shade, the blade was of the color of leaves. Upon closer inspection, one would see several thorn like markings on the surface of the blade. It was easy to see that her sword was of the earth element. Slowly, she lowered the hand on her mouth and took slow breaths. She was ready.

"Let us begin."

I'll have to watch out for those loose bricks, she absently thought as her legs tensed and her Chernobog glowed a faint emerald in reaction to her feelings.

And for heavens sake! Relax!

This would be the very first time she would be sparring with a White Fang. She couldn't be blamed if she was a little nervous. She didn't like being nervous though. Hell, whenever she faced those thieves and muggers out in the forests, she had never experienced this anticipatory feeling except for that first time. And she didn't like it then either. She flexed her neck to relieve some of the tension. If it were up to her, she'd rather be in a life and death situation than be here, facing Brandon and the nervous butterflies in her stomach. She so much more used to the former.

Brandon watched her set herself up. Turning sideways to form a smaller target, the way her sword awakened, it all seeped into his brain. Valuable information he would later use to determine her mindset. “Oh I slept a few hours. Don’t worry about it.” He was far more relaxed then Lenneth, which was only normal because he went trough these type of fights everyday.

Brandon then pulled out his deck and mumbled the activation code. It once again shivered in to life and the cards flew out of the package as he opened it. With a swift hand motion trough the cards Brandon held on to a knife in his right hand. Now he would put himself in a disadvantage position to see how Lenneth would react. The most vital piece of information was knowing how your opponent finishes a fight.

Brandon gave Lenneth a short nod in reply when she eagerly announced that she was ready. He was still standing casually with both hands at his side, the knife wasn’t even brought up yet. The deck carelessly float at his left shoulder, to protect him or to give him quick access to a new weapon, who knew?

The way Lenneth waited told Brandon enough, she was nervous and anxious at the same time. Eager to get this started and even more eager to finish it. Well, if it depended on Brandon, both of them could stand still for a long time, staring down at each other. He had no intention of opening the match with just his knife. In the best situation he would be passively attacking while he defended at the same time.

It was a trap. That was the first thought that came to Lenneth by the way Brandon was reacting. He wanted her to make the first move, probably to use his strength against her once she was within range. Or to read her movements. So which one was it? Is it possible that he had another thing on his mind? If she made a wrong move, she knew that those knives would come flying to her. What to do?

She swallowed a hard lump in her throat as she stared hard at her opponent. If she didn't make her move soon, she was going to wear herself out. So she had to get rid of her tension and the best way to do that was to attack...which was what he wanted. The corner of her lips lifted a little in a humorless smile. Fine. Let him have his way. She blinked and then stance shifted.

Lenneth's body twisted so that she was showing Brandon the full view of her stature before she gripped her sword with both hands, placing it on the left, and ran towards him, her eyes focused firmly on him and him alone. Her movements, the way her eyes moved on his left shoulder, and the determined way she was looking at him...all of it said that this one was going to be a slash attack. It would be from the bottom, starting at his hip, climbing up to his shoulder. It would be a test strike. Easily dodged or blocked.

He smiled as he saw her doubt. The seed was planted and Brandon would be the one to harvest it. Making your opponent doubt was the most standard strategy in a fight and it never failed. All the things she made up in her own mind don’t matter, that’s what she should have realized.

You could never guess what your opponent was thinking, all you can guess is his next move, his reaction, never the action itself. Once in battle everything was a reaction to Brandon. Striking towards an opening is no action, it’s the reaction to said opening. And Brandon knew exactly how to read those reactions.

So she had made up her mind? Good, that made things harder, Brandon liked that. If it was harder he would have an easier time. Strange? Not at all, if your opponent knows what he’s doing he will act like a pro. He won’t try some random fancy moves. He would be strict and attack in the most efficient way. Making it harder because any opening may be fatal but much easier to read.

He couldn’t have asked for a better chance. She had gripped her sword with both hands, would she use her full strength or not? Or did she need both hands to wield the sword? He really doubted that. He had to admit she was fast and fierce, most people would back away to let her trough. The determined look in her eyes, the steady pace, things would be interesting.

Brandon didn’t show any initial reaction to her charge. He would test her determination at this instant. Instead of avoiding her eyes he looked straight in to them. In a moment he released his determination and desire to win. It wasn’t a real killing intent but it would transfer the message. Brandon wasn’t going to move and if she did act, she would be in pain.

Every muscle in his body was ready to react at the last moment. If she did push on and attacked him he would step forward at the moment she initiated her attack. This would bring him close against her, nullifying her attack while at the same time he would place his knife on her throat.

When he didn’t move, Lenneth’s instincts literally screamed at her to back the hell away but she didn’t. Instead, she met his eyes with her own strong resolve to win this confrontation and kept her charge even. She was stubborn, so very stubborn and it showed in the way she reacted. Electrifying tension stimulated the air and the spectators truly felt the two combatants’ will to be victorious. It was the same as if they were watching two predators fighting each other to survive. It would be a battle that was going to be the source of many legendary rumors.

Everything would have gone according to Brandon’s plan except for one minor detail he had overlooked. He’d never before seen Lenneth fight with a sword while she had already seen him move twice. He liked finishing things as soon as possible, and it made her draw the conclusion that he was going to end this spar the moment she gave him an opening. Which was what she had done by giving in to his silent demand that she attack first.

But Lenneth still did not change her tactics.

As she neared him, the moment wherein she could not back away anymore and had to follow through with her decision or else suffer a heavy price for it, the very last moment that she needed to execute her attack, Brandon had stepped forward with his knife going for her throat. But as was said earlier. That was the fact that Brandon had miscalculated. Lenneth’s right foot, the one that had ended up in front, slid forward until it was fully stretched out, making her bend her left knee, her left foot turning so that it was in a sideways position and supporting the weight of her body because she too had bent backwards, and twisting her torso to the side so that he was in good view of her shoulder. The motion took her body down safely out of harm’s way of Brandon’s knife.

Legs tensing, pushed her weight upwards with her left leg. Her sword came up as she swung it upward, diagonally to the right. Her slender and smaller right leg, which was at the moment stretched out with the foot in between Brandon’s own legs bent as she rose, extracting more force from the ground, letting her strike have a forward motion, and charging it to her slash attack. This would also result in Brandon not having a good footing because if Lenneth chose to, she could continue her right leg’s rising until she had kicked his groin. This was how Lenneth struck from below. She never flat out relied on the force of her initial charges.

If he could not do anything about it, she was going to stop her attack right at his hip (although it would pretty much put her in an awkward position and not doubt her waist would suffer for it), almost touching the fabric of his clothing, and simultaneously let him know that if she had not stopped, he would have been cut in two.

When she met his own resolve she kept charging but Brandon had seen the minuscule moment it had taken to convince herself. It hadn’t shown in her movements but the way her eyes had widened for a split second. That meant she had conquered her instinct, she would probably be pretty proud of it. For Brandon she lowered in his standings. Instinct had saved him countless of times from rushing in like a mad-man. Too often he had seen men attack with courage, ‘conquering’ their instinct. Too many times those men died. Instinct was valuable, born over the years, a gift from your genes and all those who went before you. It shouldn’t be ignored, it should be accepted and embraced.

He hadn’t held any hope that this first move would end the fight. He had seen Lenneth move in that bar fight and didn’t doubt she would be able to dodge it. The only thing he had to find out was whether she was water or wind. Or if perhaps she was both. His answer would come far sooner then he hoped.

As his knife went forward, Lenneth shifted her weight and torso to the left. That would be all the info Brandon needed. From there he could see her fluid motion rippling around him like water around a rock. Too bad she had moved to his left side, unprotected but not without offence. As her body moved beside him she tensed up for the attack, it was the usual pattern of a fight. She dodged and went on to the attack. No surprises there, the real surprise would come from Brandon.

Like a snake his left hand shot out, it was aimed for her torso just as she righted herself to attack. If it hit she would feel like a rock had just been dropped on her torso, just below her neck. This was no normal fighting pattern but for Brandon it was his entire style. He hardly dodged an attack or blocked it. He punctured the attack with one of his own. This would be especially effective because Lenneth still had both hands on her sword so unless her hands could move faster then the punch from Brandon, she would have a hard time blocking it.

She hadn't seen it coming and as a result, her eyes widened when she felt the direct hit from Brandon's fist. She was in the middle of her strike. her sword's blade managing to touch or to slice Brandon's shirt -she wasn't certain- before she had been pushed back. She gritted her teeth as she frantically took a few steps back, trying to regain her balance, her eyes never leaving Brandon. After five quick steps, she was able to hold her ground, her sword held in just her left hand.

Her eyes narrowed as she tried to ignore the pain on her collar bones. That was where his fist had hit. It felt like she'd been hit by a rock. A big rock. But she couldn't show any weakness. Instead, she tried her best to look like she was puzzled, as if she had miscalculated something. Which she had. Her mind recalled the way Brandon had fought last night. She remembered that glass that had been thrown at him. He hadn't dodged then. And he had not dodged her strike just now.

Could it be that he was not afraid of being wounded? How did she fight someone who was not afraid of getting hurt? None of the people she had fought before had displayed this kind of determination. Was this how White Fangs were during a battle? All of these thoughts came to her mind in just below three seconds. She took another step back, adjusting her hold on her sword so that it was in the right side this time but it was still held by both of her hands.

How very interesting, she thought as she turned to her right side. With a determined look, Lenneth tensed her legs and charged, her sword very much in the same position as her former charge only it was in the right. If below won't work, then she'd try for above. It would be a simple slash attack, coming from above and going down to his head. It didn't matter what he would do or if he moved before her. What mattered to her was seeing just how he would react. If she her theory was right, then she already knew just how he would move. She just needed to prove it first.

Brandon only turned his head to keep his eyes on Lenneth, her sword had mildly cut his coat. He stood still and yet it seemed like he could jump out at any time. Almost as if he was saying: I could have pursued and knocked you down permanently, be happy your still standing. Which was in fact the truth, he could have tossed the knife at her or completely knocked her down if he had taken a few steps to kick her down. However, he wanted to see what she was made off, how she could handle the punch.

So far she didn’t show any signs of pain, only disbelief. He grinned at her as he faced her once again. He knew she was in pain, it couldn’t fool him, he had felt his fist hit her hard enough. Had he aimed below her breasts he would have hit her Solar Plexus and completely winded her. He then stretched out both arms and the cards came rushing towards his hands. In a matter of moments he held two short swords in his hands.

He flipped the swords around to get used to them as always. After holding the knife these blades always seemed heavy, that’s why he normally never went that way. Usually he started out with Espandon to whack around after shifting to the Leafswords, which then did seem like leaves. Now he had the clear advantage of two weapons over one. He only had to worry about her chakram now, but that would come when it came.

She braced herself for a second charge, the mental warfare had been decided in the last round, it had ended in a tie while the physical round was a win for Brandon. Would it turn out the same this time, or would Lenneth win? The two swords dangled gently in Brandon’s hands. They could go everywhere at ay time. Would he simply block the attack and raise his other sword to make her impale herself or would he dodged the slice open her guts. As much as liked to attack against attack, he also knew how to dodge and would do so to confuse his enemy.

As the high strike from Lenneth came Brandon stepped in with his left leg while he raised his left sword in a quick strike towards Lenneth’s sword tip. This wouldn’t smash away the girls sword but force it to point upwards while the strike went down. At the same time Brandon could attack her guts. Which he didn’t, instead he turned towards his back by stepping to the left with his right foot. This way he turned around her and as he completed the twist his right sword would stretch out and end at Lenneth’s neck with a stretched arm.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 07, 2008 4:43 am

Lenneth's eyes gleamed once Brandon initiated a deflect action. That was what she had been waiting for. However, instead of deflecting her sword and hopefully stagger her, her sword simple passed through Brandon's. And since he'd only aimed for the tip, Lenneth was in no danger of a cut. This was Chernobog's power. It had the ability to cut both tangible and intangible things. Lenneth only had to control it. If she had cut it through an enchanted weapon, that arsenal's (or part of it) enchantment would be disrupted and it would take a few seconds of regrouping before it was fully functional again. At worst, it wouldn't be functional at all. It would remain in the same state, never changing back into their former forms until after the enchantment recovered.

Her eyes followed his as he twisted to the side, taking careful note that he could have cut her guts (which she could have blocked with her sword). Her eyes measured the distance perfectly and she twisted in the opposite direction he did, stepping with her right foot while at the same time she transfered her hold on her sword to her right hand. At the moment, they were back to back. And as Brandon completed his twist and thrust his sword towards her, Lenneth brought her right foot up to bring forth a mighty kick upwards at his sword's blade. Her left hand, however, had gone up to grab one of her chakrams.

As soon as her foot hit his sword, Lenneth was going to bring her sword up to his neck fast before he had a chance to recover while at the same time, bring her foot down to grant her more balance. If he decided to take a step back, she would take a step forward and still bring her sword up to his neck. Her left was guarded by her chakram so if he chose to attack there, she would block it. If he chose to attack her right with his free sword, she'd relinquish his neck to block it by letting her left foot step forward. She'd bring her chakram up too in an attempt to point it at his neck. If he decided to kick her, she would simply retaliate with a kick of her own.

The sword from Lenneth passed right trough Brandon his sword. Instead of the enchantment trying to maintain itself it quickly disabled itself. The sword returned to cards and those cards quickly pulled away from the blade. Brandon continued his move but he knew he would have to think off something to counter that sword. If he couldn’t touch it he would just have to attack the arm that wielded it. He did however wonder if Lenneth was fully aware off what she had just done. If she had hit the wrong spot the card deck might have been destroyed for life. Would she go to such lengths to win a training spar?

Because his sword got destroyed he deemed it best to not attack with swords anymore. That’s why his tactic changed as they went back to back. Instead of stepping out and striking with his sword, he used his elbow at the moment their back connected. By twisting his upper body to the right at that exact moment he would almost be sure to push Lenneth out off balance. Together with that he had raised his right elbow and aimed it at Lenneth’s head. She might feel the pressure from his right shoulder but she wouldn’t see the elbow coming at her.

If she stepped forward from the push he would use his full arm to strike her. If he did however miss her by any chance, let’s say if she tumbled forward. He would complete the turn in the blink off and eye and try to slug her with his left fist, which would have let go of the sword at that point.

Move disrupted, Lenneth’s eyes widened a fraction when she felt him push. She reacted more out of instinct than her mind. Her body stiffened, a bad move she would realize later on, preventing herself from stumbling forward. She did not see the elbow coming and so-

"Argh!"

Lenneth's body fell sideways as Brandon's elbow hit her temple. She hit the ground hard with a sickening crack. Chernobog cluttered a few inches away from her hand. The sword glowed once before it went to sleep. Without Lenneth's touch, Chernobog was back to being a regular one-hand sword. Lenneth blinked as the world blurred. Did her head hit the ground too?

What was going on? Brandon's hit, even though it had been a direct one, should not have damaged her this much. She'd taken blows to the head before and none of them were this painful and not to mention bothersome. She blinked again when she felt something wet on the right side of her face. Sweat? Lenneth felt it with her fingertips and when she brought it down to her face, it took a few seconds for her to realize that she was bleeding.

It was a head wound.

Later on, it would occur to her that she was lucky that she was still conscious. At the moment however, her survival instincts had taken over and they were telling her that this man had hurt her.

And she needed to defend herself.

Quickly she grabbed her sword and stood up (clumsily). Then she ran towards Brandon, her sword aimed at his neck. From the look in her eyes, Brandon would be able to quickly surmise that Lenneth was not in her right mind. He was a threat to her. He needed to be disposed of.

From the ground that Lenneth's head had hit, there was a protruding brick and it was covered in blood. Lenneth's head had hit the pointed side of the brick.

As Brandon completed his turn he saw Lenneth go down hard. True, his elbow hit had been hard bit he hadn’t expected her to fall down that hard. He turned his entire body towards her as he saw the surprised expression on her face. There was more going on then a normal hit to the head. Brandon saw it and the rest of the White Fang saw it. The excitement from before was gone and made way for concern. They all seemed eager to jump by Lenneth’s side and help her get up again.

It was then that she raised herself and that Brandon saw the blood on the other side of her head. A quick glance to the ground revealed the culprit and Brandon was about to apologize when she suddenly focussed her eyes upon him. The killing intent was without a doubt fiercer then previously. Something was wrong, it seemed as if she had forgotten that this was just a spar.

All doubt about her acting on instincts vanished the moment there eyes met. She had gone feral and Brandon would have to step in to stop her. With any other White Fang he would try to contain them and force them back to her senses. It’s because they knew each other so well that he would be able to do such a thing. Lenneth on the other hand wasn’t familiar to him.

So he needed to knock her out and be quick about it. His best chance was right now because she was still a little light in the head from the hit. All weapons he had in his hands disappeared as he braced himself for the impact. A high swing to his neck wouldn’t take him out because he could easily block it. In fact, everything he was going to do was going to be in one fluent and hard motion. His killing intent faded away and it seemed that around him was a complete oases of peace. This was Brandon at 100% and so far only a few older and more experienced White Fangs had been able to take him out.

When the strike to his neck came close he stepped in like before, this time however his right leg was put forward. His left hand snatched at Lenneth’s lower arm to prevent her from completing the strike while his right hand was curled up at the side. Because he stepped in with his right foot his arm almost touched Lenneth’s chest. When he put his foot down he instantly launched an uppercut with his right fist. If it hit, it would jolt Lenneth’s brain and knock her unconscious in a matter of moments.

At that point most of her muscles would relax, making her drop the sword and fall down backwards. Brandon would prevent her from falling by quickly grabbing her by the waist with his right hand and hold on to her with his arm with his left.

She felt the impact far too well. She didn't even get the chance to grunt in pain. One moment she was heading towards her enemy and the next she was falling backwards. Her vision blurred as she felt herself falling but it didn't really 'register' to her. The sound of metal hitting the ground reached her ears (her sword?) and then there was another (her chakram?) before she realized that she hadn't hit the ground. Something or someone had caught her.

She didn't have much of a chance to think about that either because her mind decided right then and there to stop working. Her vision became even blurrier and she was forced to close her eyes, finally surrendering to sleep...or a knock out in this instance.

---

The hand on the bed twitched slightly, signaling that the owner was regaining consciousness. Lenneth groaned softly as she resurfaced from the land of slumber. Good heavens! Her head hurt! And not only her head. Her body felt like it had hit a solid wall hard. Her movements (if she was moving at all) felt sluggish and she was finding it hard to concentrate on anything except the pounding in her head.

And then it all came rushing back to her. Lenneth quickly opened her eyes, regretting it a moment later when the light blinded her and caused her headache to rise. She turned her head to the side, hoping to shield her eyes from the light when she caught sight of the room she was in. Where on earth was she? And her weapons? Alarmed at not being able to see them, Lenneth quickly sat up, gritting her teeth as the world spun for a moment before it righted itself up again.

"Treated," she said to herself as she touched the place where she had hit her head. There was a bandage there and it didn't feel wet so she could only assume that it had been a while since she was in bed. Her shoulders sagged as she recalled the way Brandon had managed to subdue her. It had been so easy for him that she felt a little ashamed at how much better he was at fighting.

"So I lost," she said, sighing a little before smiling. She had really lost. Wouldn't Viktor get a kick out of that? She knew she should feel indignant but there was only calm acceptance and satisfaction in her at the realization that Brandon had beaten her.

Brandon smiled gently as he held her gently in his right arm. The sword fell just inches away from his foot and he was rather happy it hadn’t hit him. When Lenneth closed her eyes the crowd relaxed and started mumbling amongst each other. Brandon bend down as he let go of her arm and instead slipped his arm under her knees. Without much effort he lifted her up and started shouting orders. “Somebody take those weapons of her and follow me.”

A low ranked White Fang hoping to get noticed by the rest stepped out of the crowd and quickly picked up Lenneth’s weapons. Without anymore conversation Brandon nodded to the young man and proceeded to walk towards the barracks. They didn’t have an infirmary that treated small wounds like the one Lenneth had. Each White Fang was perfectly capable of treating such wounds themselves.

When they arrived at his bunk he placed her gently on the bed and ordered the kid to place the weapons in his weapon-case since it was empty anyway. Without even thinking about it he pulled out his bandages and the lot. With a bit of water from his flask he cleaned away most of the blood. Tugging her hair out of the wound he got a descent look at the wound. It wasn’t so deep, actually a very small cut but it bled like hell.

He grabbed a towel and pressed down hard on the wound. First he had to try and stop the bleeding as much as possible. By applying pressure he pressed away the blood and it helped a little bit. He then started bandaging her head with a small piece of fabric rolled in to a ball against the wound. This would press hard against the wound and prevent excessive bleeding. When that was done he pulled the now dirty pillow out beneath her head and replaced it with a clean one. All he had to do now was wait for her to wake up.

---------------

It took her long enough, was the first thought he had when he finally saw her move. Two clean bandages and two hours later. All the while Brandon had been sitting besides her bed. Only getting up to grab a bit to eat and drink. So it wasn’t surprising that he didn’t say anything when she first moved. Even when she sat up he just let her be. It would be best to let her experience at first hand how her condition was.

With a slight cough he tried to draw the attention to himself since she had obviously not seen him yet. “Yeah, you pretty much lost but that was to be expected. You did however but up a great fight and really surprised me with that sword of yours. It nearly messed up my deck.” He tapped his chest just below his heart, signalling the position of his deck and how he cherished it.
