“Maybe someone’s looking out for you? You’d be surprised how well being my glorified babysitter will affect your career.” Brooklyn said, no emotion in his voice. He paused at Johnny’s question before turning and looking the redhead in the eyes. “Not always.” He said carefully. “Why do you ask?” He asked, careful to keep the suspicion out of his voice.
He wasn’t used to his companions asking questions. Normally they were content to simply follow him around, pretending that they were the ones with the power, and taking the kudos after they had finished their jaunt with Brooklyn. They were never interested in Brooklyn. He found Johnny’s apparent interest... unsettling.
“Here’s your coffee.” The waitress said, coming out of the cafe to set the two cups down. Brooklyn looked up at the waitress and smiled. “Look, I really do feel bad. It was my own fault I fell over. Please let me pay.” He tried.
The waitress shook her head infuriatingly. “I couldn’t possibly do that to you. No, you enjoy your coffee.” She smiled and turned to leave them.
“Are you sure I can’t change your mind?” Brooklyn asked, leaning slightly toward the waitress. “I really do feel bad.”
The waitress paused to throw a smile over her shoulder. “Positive. Just leave your cups there when you’re done.”
Brooklyn sighed and sat back in his chair, a defeated look on his face. He waited until the waitress had retreated back into the cafe before the look was replaced with a smirk. “See? Now I don’t feel so bad.” He told Johnny as he held up two bills, the only two left from the pile he had stolen. “And we have enough to tip her.” Brooklyn sat back in his chair again, pleased with himself.
~
Noah blinked as the attention was placed back on him. “Um...” He frowned as he tried to remember. “I know that those three in the photos all had guns.” He said, cringing at how vague he sounded. “They were all trying to get that guy you were interviewing yesterday and the other guy who was...shot.”
“I...can’t remember if the other people had guns and were shooting back.” Noah rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. “I’m sorry.”
~
“I think he’s doing it so he doesn’t have another yesterday.” Kai murmured so Rei wouldn’t hear him. Kai shrugged, a difficult feat when jogging, “Whatever makes him feel better, right?” He asked.
Rei ignored what was going on behind him and ran through the back alleys, knowing his way through them almost by instinct. He slowed down abruptly as the police station came into view. He wasn’t wrong about the kid showing up here. He knew he wasn’t.
Rei sidled up to the mouth of the alleyway and scanned the street in front of the alleyway, hoping he would get lucky.
Instead he received a nasty surprise. Rei swore and jumped back into the shadow of the alleyway. He should have known that his idea wouldn’t be an original one. Brooklyn’s and Johnny’s presence in the cafe attested to that fact.
Rei pressed himself against the wall of the alleyway, closing his eyes and hitting his head against the rough brickwork. “Now what?” He asked plaintively. He knew that even with their elite status in the Rebels they were no match for Brooklyn. Too many stories about the Tyrants top assassin had filtered down for them all to be lies. There was something about Brooklyn that screamed ‘danger.’
But he couldn’t give up that boy.
Rei scowled as he crept back to the mouth of the alleyway, crouching down comfortably so he had a full view of the front of the police station. Even if the boy appeared now not even Brooklyn would dare attack him on a busy street. He had time to come up with a strategy that wouldn’t get them all killed. Hopefully.

"No reason," Johnny replied, "I'm just curious." And he really was. Brooklyn was a bit of an enigma in the Tyrant's headquarters. While rumors about him got around quickly, Johnny had rarely met anyone that had come close enough the orange haired man to really say anything other than he was scary.
Johnny found him interesting and intelligent. He was expecting a mad man to be honest but Brooklyn seemed to be altogether mentally.
So far.
"Wish that kid would hurry up," Johnny muttered, "I hate waiting."
Johnny took a sip of the coffee in front of him and scrunched his nose up.
"Erk, that's really strong," he put the cup down and ignored it for the time being. "So," he lowered his voice, "Where do you want to deal with the kid? Lure him through a gate somewhere? He would be virtually untraceable."
~
Bryan nodded. "That's fine, having the photo's verified is most important."
He looked toward the front entrance for a moment before frowning. "I'd say Lilith would have some other questions to ask you but she seems to have disappeared."
He shrugged and looked at Noah. "But i'm sure we can always call you back later on so you're free to head off now. Come on, i'll walk you out."
Bryan waited for Noah to stand up and follow him to the front entrance. He was going to check with receptionist to see if Lilith had snuck in and was preoccupied with some other task.
Which struck him as odd since she would of had to have passed Noah on the way out and no he was here. She wasn't the type to forget about something important as speaking to a witness.
~
Tala peeked around the corner of the alleyway to see what Rei was getting upset about. His eyes locked onto the pair at the cafe and he quickly retreated back into the shadows.
He let out a low whistle. "Looks like someone had the same idea as you, Rei."
The redhead smirked. "Ah well, looks like today won't be boring."
~
Taki snorted. "A lot of things are possible down here."
He grabbed Lilith's arm and started to drag her into the tunnel. She was having none of that though, digging her heels in and pulling her upper arm out of his grip, refusing to walk. He turned and pinned her with a glare.
"I don't think so," she said, "There is no way i'm going down there with the likes of you. God only knows what you have down there."
Taki raised an eyebrow. She was a lot bolder without something sharp held against her neck. Maybe he shouldn't have put his knife away.
"Oh?" he growled, "And what are you planning to do? Run away? Scream?"
"I might," she snapped back.
He folded his arms. "Go on then, try it, i dare you. No one from your world will hear you here though, and if anyone from this world does they're not going to give a s**t. I could do anything to you and no one would care."
Lilith stared at him defiantly for a moment before turning towards the wall of rock they had walked through. She wasn't a screamer anyways.
She took a tentative step toward the wall to see if her captor would follow her. He didn't and that worried her.
He wouldn't have dragged her all this way just to watch her escape.
She stepped closer and turned on her side so she could touch the wall with her shoulder.
It was solid.
"You happy now?" Taki asked, unfolding his arms and walking over to her, grabbing her by the upper arm, "You can't get through without knowing how. Just give up."
She sighed as she let him drag her towards the tunnel to god-knows-where.
"Someone will track you down from the department," she murmured, still holding onto the little bit of hope that she would get out of this eventually, "They know who you are, they'll track you down."
He snorted again."No," he said, annoyed, "They won't, because i don't technically exist up there anyway"
Her eyes widened. So Bryan wouldn't have any luck finding them on the databases just like Balcov.
She chewed on her bottom lip as she thought that over. How could they possibly not exist? There had to be a logical explanation.
Her eyes widened as she realised something. She lifted her head to stare at Taki.
"I know what you are."

Brooklyn chuckled quietly at Johnny’s reaction to the coffee as he took a sip of it. Like everything else in the overworld, the flavour of the coffee just seemed more intense and alive. It was a pleasant change. He regarded Johnny with a small frown on his face as he considered the question.
“It won’t do for us to take him back down.” He said eventually. “It’s much better if it’s done up here. Police are less likely to involve themselves in what looks like a gang-related murder than if a witness goes missing. If he’s dead they won’t go looking.”
Brooklyn sighed as he sat back in his seat and looked over at the police station. “And if they don’t go looking they won’t find anything.” He finished his thought almost to himself. Brooklyn shrugged and squinted, noticing movement within the police station. “I think if we just follow him when he gets out he’ll lead us somewhere suitable. He seems like the private type.”
Brooklyn squinted at the police station doors. “Someone’s coming out.” He said quietly, sipping his coffee seemingly unconcernedly. “You might want to finish your coffee quickly. It’ll look suspicious if we get up, leaving in a hurry and leaving our coffee half-drunk. We’ve already given the waitress enough reason to remember us. May as well not give her any strange ones.”
Brooklyn took another big gulp of his cup, ignoring the burn as the hot liquid slid down his throat. That wasn’t important. He was sure he could see a figure with about the right hair colour and build in the reception of the police station.
“Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.” Noah said over his shoulder as he opened the door of the police station and stepped out into the light. He blinked a few times as he got used to the sudden brightness and walked down the stairs of the station, tucking his hands into his pockets. That hadn’t been half as bad as he thought it would be.
Noah smiled to himself as he began to walk away from the police station and back toward his home. Now all he had to worry about was explaining his bad mood to his mother. But that could be done fairly easily and with little truth involved.
Rei stood up, both surprised and excited. “That’s him.” He told the two behind him. He looked over at the table with Johnny and Brooklyn sitting at it. Brooklyn was eying the boy with apparent disinterest. “Brooklyn’s noticed him too.” He said, keeping his dismay out of his voice. “If either of you have any suggestions about how to keep us alive while saving the boy I’m all ears.” He said, glancing back at Kai and Tala. “At the moment all I can think of is snatching him and running like hell.”
“Which, if they followed, could lead them to one of our hidden gates and then to our hideout.” Kai said dispassionately as he looked out of the alley at the boy that was causing all the trouble. “Not the best solution.”
Rei raised an eyebrow at Kai “And you have a better one?” He asked.
Kai shrugged. “It all depends on if Brooklyn knows we’re here as well.” He said carefully. “If he knows we’re here we should go home now. There’s no sense killing ourselves over the life of one boy.” He looked apologetically at Rei. “Our lives are more important than his when it comes down to it.”
Rei made a noise in the back of his throat, signalling his disagreement.
Kai sighed quietly and continued. “If Brooklyn hasn’t seen us yet and if we can get to the boy fast enough we may be able to spirit him away without them being any the wiser. But that will require a much higher level of stealth than we’re used to. Maybe more than we’re capable of.” Kai shrugged. “But when it comes down to it, that’s the only way.”
Rei snorted. “So you’ve come up with snatching him and running like hell- but in secret.” He said, amusement in his voice.
Kai smirked. “Basically. We already know that we can’t take Brooklyn in a fight. Even though he’s just an underworlder, his powers are legendary. We may be good but we’re not that good. It would take a lot of luck in order for us to even injure him.”
“But we don’t know that for sure.” Rei interjected. “We’ve never been up against him ourselves. Even if we could just distract him long enough to get the kid out of the way we will have achieved our goal.”
Kai sighed at Rei’s stubborn refusal to see the lost cuse they had in front of them. “I doubt all of the rumours are made up.” He said levelly. “Most of them are too detailed and contain too much of the same information for them to just be the embellishments of some random story teller. My bet is that some of it is true at least.”

Johnny scratched his chin. “I think it’s likely that the police will be suspicious anyway, whether he’s missing or just dead, since he’s connected to the events that happened yesterday. It’s too close to the event of the crime not to raise questions.”
He shrugged, not worried about it at all. “But why should we care about that? They won’t find us no matter where they look.”
The coffee cup was pushed to the middle of the table. “It would look weirder if I sculled hot coffee and then left. I’m sure the waitress wouldn’t care. She probably has horrible customers demanding free coffee from her all day for smaller incidents and hey,” he flashed the other male a grin, “I have you to look the part of a ‘normal’ customer.”
Johnny studied the boy walking away from the police station. Satisfying himself that it was their target, he slowly stood up from the table.
“Let’s go. We don’t want to be late for that appointment, now do we?”
No one would be able to be suspicious of the pair if they were listening in right then.
~
“So what are you proposing we do if Brooklyn does corner us? Sounds to me like we’ll be fighting with everything we got.”
Tala frowned at Noah as he walked up the footpath, unsuspecting of what was being planned for him. “Are you sure he’s worth it Rei? I mean I know Taki would be upset if another innocent got killed up here but I know he’d be worse if one of us, or all of us, got hurt in the process. He’s not that stupid or that much of risk taker.”
The redhead sighed, already knowing what Rei would most likely say. He wasn’t going to be moved on this subject, Tala may as well just accept it and mentally prepare for the worst.
He studied his hand as he flexed it. “I doubt both of your plans will end without a fight.”
~
“Have a nice day!” the receptionist called out to Noah as he left before turning to Bryan, “Can I help you with something?”
Bryan raised a hand in a gesture of farewell as he leaned on the receptionist’s counter.
“Lilith hasn’t come past here has she, Amy?” he turned to the receptionist.
Amy thought for a moment before shaking her head slowly. “No, sorry I haven’t seen her come by.”
Bryan’s eyebrows furrowed in thought.
Amy frowned at the expression, understanding something was wrong. “But I have had to go and find files and other things for people,” she babbled, “So I may not have seen her walk past. Maybe she’s out the back distracted by something?”
Bryan nodded and walked back into the office. He highly doubted Lilith was ‘distracted’ by something.
There wasn’t anything shiny in this building for starters.
He checked the whole office, earning a few stares from other staff for just wandering around. She wasn’t to any of the other detectives about cases. The bins next to the printers and paper shredder were already cleared so she wasn’t still doing that duty. Her desk was still empty and so was the kitchen.
Bryan frowned and walked back towards the front. It was possible that some event outside was holding her up. Although she would have called for back up already. He walked through the front doors and turned, heading for the dumpster out the back.
Amy frowned as she watched Bryan’s back disappear out the door. This wasn’t looking good.
Bryan looked around the parking lot as he walked. There was no sign of anyone. He watched the ground in front of him, scouting for clues that could tell him where Lilith got off to.
He came to an abrupt stop as he spotted a garbage bag. The rubbish obviously didn’t get to the dumpster. He looked around more slowly now, taking in every detail of his surroundings.
A flash caught his eye. It was coming from ground near a car close to him.
He stepped closer, examining the object.
It was a gun. Wedged under the car’s tyre. The sun was in the right position to shine off the metal.
It was also the model that Lilith used.
Bryan pulled his cell phone out from his pant’s pocket and dialled a number.
He listened to Amy’s cheerful greeting while still looking at the gun. “Amy, it’s Bryan. Can you get someone to bring the police tape out the back to the dumpster? I’ll be waiting for them here. And call the chief, tell him we have a situation.”
~
Taki froze. Knew what he was?
Once again he had a meltdown internally at those words.
What did she mean knew what he was? Had he grown a tail or something without realizing it? Maybe his temper had gotten the better of him again and he partially transformed out of frustration? He really needed to work on this whole managing his emotions thing otherwise he was going to stub his toe one day in the overworld and transform from the anger. Not that it looked like he was getting to be in the over world that much with his being on the most wanted list. He really should have stayed in bed. What was he going to do if she really knew what he was?
A calm voice in the back of his head told him it didn’t really matter if she knew. It wasn’t like she could do anything about it or escape and expose them all. He was just overreacting out of habit.
He glanced at her. “Oh?”
She stared back. “There’s only one thing you could be. There are no records of you in the country and you’re hiding from society in a cave. You’re illegal immigrants.”
Taki blinked. That was all? That was what she had come up with? Illegal immigrants? He mentally sighed in relief before being amused by the fact.
Sure it made sense when you looked at it but it was far from the truth.
He chuckled and turned away, continuing to walk towards their hideout.
“Sorry, try again,” he said, “You're amusing me.”
Lilith was stunned. There really was no other explanation that she could come up with. The illegal immigrants idea had made perfect sense. She thought about walking through the wall for a moment, realising that nothing would probably make sense down here.
She hung her head, watching the ground as she followed along.
They came out of the mouth of the tunnel and into the outskirts of one of the underworld’s towns. Lilith looked up and her eyes widened in surprise.
There was a complete city down here. Just like the city she had been dragged from. It was just darker.
Taki lead her down one of the side streets. He wanted to avoid as many people as possible on his way back to the base.
Ads they got closer to the rebel’s building, Taki noticed a group of underworlders gathered on the side of the street. What were they hanging around here for? He had no time to deal with them though so he quickened his pace and pulled Lilith closer to him.
Sure, he may have been the one to kidnap her and hold a weapon against her neck but there were worse things that could be done to her down here. He wasn’t going to let another innocent overworlder get hurt if he could help it.
The men looked up at Taki for a moment before turning their gaze onto Lilith. One of them smirked and took a step forward.
Taki narrowed his eyes and growled.
Lilith avoided eye contact with the other men. For the first time that day she felt safer with her captor as opposed to being by herself. Those men just oozed creepy. She was so frightened by their looks that she completely missed how animalistic the noise coming from Taki was. It almost sounded like a real big cat or dog.
Where on earth was she?
Taki opened the door to the Rebel’s base and shoved Lilith inside, giving the group one last glare before going inside and closing the door. If they tried anything closer to the base he would deal with them then. Now, it was better to just ignore them.
He pulled Lilith into his office and directed her to a sofa under one of the windows.
She sat down and glared at him.
“Where’s the key for the handcuffs?” he asked.
She stared defiantly for a moment, contemplating whether she should cooperate or not. In the end she decided she would rather see if he was going to take them off or not rather than never find out at all.
“In the pocket of my jacket on this side,” she nodded with her head, directing him.
He fished around in her pocket, pulling out the key and moving towards the hands on her back. There was no point tying her up. She couldn’t escape the underworld without him and it really was safer inside.
He took the handcuffs off, releasing her hands.
“There. I’m sure that is bet-“
He was cut off when Lilith’s fist connected with his jaw, throwing his head to the ********!” he clutched his throbbing jaw. The woman was hiding some strength in those arms of hers. Maybe freeing her hands wasn’t a good idea.
Taki felt his pupils contracting into slits as his anger rose. He shook his head to clear his mind and stop his transformation before it really started.
He turned to glare at Lilith, his eyes normal again. She was rubbing right hand as she glared back.
Well at least he wasn’t the only one hurting.
“That makes me feel a little bit better,” she said bluntly.
Taki glared for a moment more before heading to his desk, ignoring her. He picked up the report on the top of the pile and leaned against the front of his desk as he read it.
His eyes widened at the words inside. It was about Noah. He assumed that was where the other three were now since no one had appeared and greeted him yet.
Lilith watched Taki as he read the paper in his hands. He looked like he was concentrating hard on it so she made the mistake for the second time that day that he wasn’t paying attention to her.
She stood up and started to head for the door. Maybe she could escape and get away from this place and back to the station.
“Where do you think you are going?”
She froze and turned toward him. He was watching her with a blank expression. She opened her mouth to say something but was cut off.
“If you’re thinking about running away then you should stop now. You can’t get through the wall without me showing you how so you’re stuck down here.”
She had thought about that but she was going to try and figure it out herself.
“That is if you get the gateway. I don’t know if you noticed that lot outside but they certainly noticed you. Your not in your world anymore, there are no laws down here. You would most likely be beaten, raped murdered or all three. And trust me, you have no defences down here.”
He shrugged and went back to the report. “But if you think you can handle all that than be my guest and try.”
Lilith hesitated. He could have been saying that to just scare her but then she thought of the guys outside and the aura they projected. She also remembered Taki having the same attitude when he told her to walk through the wall again.
He was right then so he was most likely right now.
She sighed, walking back to the sofa and slumping into it. She leaned her forehead against the window and closed her eyes, once again trying not to cry. She was stuck. Well and truly stuck with no way out and no idea what would happen next.
Taki mirrored her sigh. I hope you three know what you’re doing. You had better stay safe.
((ok no more of Bryan, Taki and Lilith for a while now sweatdrop ))

Brooklyn rolled his eyes at Johnny before setting his cup down on the table, placing it so it held down the two bills he had saved for the waitress’s tip. “Since when are we ever late?” He asked casually, a small smirk forming on his lips. He stood and eyed Johnny, amusement in his eyes. “It’s not like they can start without us.”
Brooklyn sauntered past Johnny, the smirk still on his lips. “If he goes missing the police will expend resources looking for him and, in turn, restrict our movements. He’s the only witness to a double murder apart from Balcov and the only one not directly involved. They want him alive.” He crossed the road and began following Noah nonchalantly, as if he were just heading in the same direction. “By contrast, if he were found dead they would search for their villains single-mindedly. If they lose their witness they’re likely to get blinded by misguided notions of ‘justice’ and will miss things.” Brooklyn glanced over his shoulder at Johnny. “This, in turn, means that we’re free to wander around up here as much as we want.”
Noah walked ahead of them, unaware of their conversation. He was too busy going over his conversation with Bryan in his head, already second-guessing his answers and going over his memories. He hadn’t meant to be unhelpful but he couldn’t help but feel that Bryan was hoping for something more and that, not getting it, had lost all interest in Noah’s presence.
Noah tucked his hands in his pockets and turned the corner into a smaller street.
Rei turned to glare at Tala. “So would you rather go back now? Knowing that that kid who just walked out of the police station thinking that this whole business is behind him is about to be murdered? And that we can stop it?” He turned back to the mouth of the alleyway, not willing to continue the argument, Whatever Kai and Tala individually decided didn’t matter in the long run. Rei couldn’t let that boy die.
Rei had never been directly responsible for the death of an overworlder until that girl had died the day before. As part of the elite in the Rebels’ organisation he had been responsible for the deaths of many of the Tyrant’s people but this was different. The overworlders were completely innocent and unaware of the happenings in the underworld. For them to die because of a conflict they were unaware of and had no part in was unacceptable.
Rei blinked when he realised what was happening. “They’re moving. If we want to get this kid before they get to him we should go now.” He paused and turned to look at Kai and Tala. “Look, if you don’t want to come I can’t make you. Just please. Do this for me.” He looked around the corner again, watching Johnny and Brooklyn cross the road. “There’s no way we can sneak around them that way.” He said, his eyes narrowing.
“Up.” Kai said simply, indicating with his head to the mostly flat-topped buildings that surrounded them. “It’s the most direct route and, if gone about correctly, will keep us hidden from street view.”
Rei looked upwards and grinned. “So I take it you’re onboard then?” He asked.
Kai shrugged. “You’ll kill yourself otherwise. At least this way we might just survive. Barely, mind you.”
Rei smirked and didn’t answer. If Kai supported him it at least mean there was some hope that the boy could survive. Kai didn’t fight losing battles.
He closed his eyes and concentrated, releasing a small part of the ironclad control he had on the beast within him. He felt his arms and his legs grow warm as they began to fill out, drawing on the muscle strength of the tiger within him. He opened his eyes again and smiled, his canines noticeably sharper than before. “Let’s go do this then, shall we?”
Rei jumped and caught hold of the bottom of the safety railing of a fire escape several metres above the ground. He swung to push off the wall the railing was attached to and, taking advantage of the extra strength of the tiger, leaped to collide with the wall opposite another few metres up. He pushed off that wall immediately and launched himself at the opposite wall again, his hands reaching to grip the ledge that ran around the edge of the roof. Rei’s feet scrabbled against the wall before funding some purchase and helping him haul himself over the ledge to land on the rooftop safely.
He looked over the edge, down at Tala and Kai, motioning toward the fire escape and a more conventional way to get up to the roof before turning and running along the rooftop, his newfound strength giving him confidence.
Kai watched Rei climb with a raised eyebrow. “He’s going to get us killed.” He muttered to himself as he jogged over to the fire escape and started climbing as quickly as he could. He paused halfway up to look down at Tala. “You coming?” He asked before continuing to climb
Rei ran across to rooves, jumping between buildings until he reached the building forming one of the sides of the narrow street Noah had turned down. He paused on the edge of the roof, looking down at the brunette who was dawdling down the street.
Rei glanced behind him to see if Kai’s head breach the top of the fire escape ladder. He waved to get the other’s attention before stepping over the edge of the building.
Rei landed gracefully, the extra muscle in his arms and legs serving to absorb the shock much more effectively than he ever could on his own. He rose from his crouching position to see Noah, staring at him in shock.
“Y-You.” Noah began, bewildered. He was already constantly reliving the events of the day before, now one of the key players was dropping from the sky? “Wh-You? Why? Wha-?”
Rei pushed Noah out of the middle of the street and into the wall, forgetting his newfound strength. Noah grunted as he hit the wall and turned to look at Rei with wide, fearful eyes.
Rei ignored the look and followed Noah to the wall of the building, making sure to stand so he would block Noah from view of the main street. “Listen.” He ordered. “In a few seconds some people are going to come around that corner and try to kill you. But not if we run now. I don’t have time to explain. I need you to trust me and do what I say, alright?”
Noah blinked, trying to comprehend before giving up and letting his survival instincts kick in. It was too much. First he witnessed a murder and then one of the suspects came and claimed to want to save his life? Noah lashed out a Rei, his arm connecting with Rei’s neck, driving him back. “You think I’m going to blindly trust someone like you?” He asked incredulously, panic seeping into his voice. “You killed that girl!”
Rei coughed, bending over, his hand around his neck as he gasped for air. He looked up at Noah, distressed. It hadn’t occurred to him that Noah would resist being saved. Or that he would say the words that had been going through his head since he had realised that the girl was dead.
“No!” Rei croaked out between coughs. “It’s not like that! I didn’t mean- we didn’t mean-“ He stopped, unable to keep speaking.
Kai ran across the rooftops, not pausing to worry or think about what he was getting himself into. Rei’s safety was imperative. Even if the boy they were trying to save died he needed to get Rei out. He couldn’t and wouldn’t consider any other outcomes. He reached the building he had seen Rei on before he had disappeared from view.
Kai looked down to see their target and Rei doubled over, seemingly struggling for air.
“Screw you.” Noah said with a lot more bravado than he felt. He could see that Rei wasn’t a threat anymore but that didn’t change the fact that he was wanted for murder and, if he had the chance, wouldn’t hesitate to do the same to Noah. “Don’t you even think about following me home.”
“And here I thought this trip would be boring.” Brooklyn said as he turned down the street. He could already feel the darkness within him beginning to take over in anticipation of the kill. “So tell me.” He said, a languid smile forming on his features. “Why has the infamous Rei Kon fallen into my lap? Am I just extremely lucky?”
~
Issac walked out of another pointless meeting with Balcov, controlling his frustration. Even though Voltaire’s death had well and truly opened up the position for second-in-command of their organisation Balcov still hadn’t given any indication that he intended for Issac to fill the gap. Which meant that Issac was still stuck as a glorified office manager despite his extensive knowledge about the runnings and the plans of the organisation.
He closed his eyes and shook his head, trying to literally shake the anger and the frustration. He knew that he had the support base underneath him to challenge Balcov for leadership but he didn’t want to just yet. Balcov had proved many times over to have unique and useful insights into how to run and keep the underworld within his control. Issac had no illusions that, without Balcov, they would still be one of a number of small factions, warring for control. He was reluctant to depose Balcov before the man had truly outlived his usefulness.

((lol, this is going to look disjointed))
Johnny quirked an eyebrow at Brooklyn as he followed him. The other was blurting out theories that Johnny was only half understanding, but he trusted the other one to be right.
To be honest, Johnny was glad that they were finally on the move. He was intrigued about Brooklyn's legendary powers. While a little odd, Brooklyn wasn't living up to anything Johnny was expecting of him. He only hoped that would be true for the other's so called horrifying powers.
It may have been a little bizarre, but he wanted to see what Brooklyn was capable of. Any one else would rather have eaten glass than do that.
Tala sighed. Rei got worked up over a lot of things. What was one more person dieing in the grand scheme of things? It wasn't like it was a whole city, and there would always be overworlder deaths in the future. Rei couldn't save all of them even if he tried.
The most likely outcome of today was not going to be good.
Tala quickly followed after Kai up the fire escape. "That's a possibility, but i don't think you'd be able to live with yourself if you let him die by himself," he told Kai.
He didn't feel the need to expend energy unnecessarily to get to the top. If he was right, he knew he was going to need all the energy he could get soon.
Sure, he could turn back now but he'd feel extremely guilty if anything happened to the other two.
He raced over the rooftops after Kai, pulling up next to the bluenette and looking over the edge of the building. His eye's scanned over the scene, stopping to focus on the two tyrant's at end of the street.
"Great," he muttered.
Johnny stepped up behind Brooklyn and smirked. He took in the brave act Noah was putting on, knowing it was futile, and the rather weak looking Rei. If he was getting beat up by an overworlder than what good was he? This should be simple. Get rid of the witness and take out a Rebel on the way. Johnny was happy to stand back and let Brooklyn handle this. He seemed like the type to relish destruction.
"Hmm," he said, "Doesn't look like he will be much of a threat. Seems almost a shame to destroy something so pretty."
Tala growled under his breath. “Damnit.”
Frustration at away at him on the inside, making his control over the beast within waver. He used that to his advantage, calling out some of the power and jumping over the edge of the building, his leg muscles growing and strengthening and his canine’s elongating as he fell. He landed on the pavement with a crack, straightening up and facing the other two Tyrants with an icy glare.
Tala wasn’t one to stand around and watch once something was happening. He’d rather jump head first into the scene and go from there. The way things were going there wouldn’t be time to think once things got heated up.
~
Aiden was leaning up against a wall a few metres ahead of Issac, arms folded and eyes closed. He had been waiting for the other to get out of the meeting with Balcov for a while now, not content with wandering around the Tyrant’s base without some order to follow.
If he did wander he would start getting idea that he couldn’t afford to have at the moment. Especially since most of them involved things outside of the headquarters, not within easy reach.
He looked up as he heard footsteps approaching, peering through his platinum bangs at the only person he would follow in this place. Balcov was not on his most liked list that was for sure.
He continued to lean against the wall, blinking is amber eyes a couple of times, waiting for Issac to make the first move.

Brooklyn blinked when Tala landed, the lazy smile on his features widening. “Tala Ivanov...” He said, nodding in greeting. He looked up to where Tala has jumped from. “And Kai Hiwatari. Today really is my lucky day, isn’t it?” He stepped further into the small street, the euphoric feeling of the darkness coming over him as he felt the small control he had over it begin to lessen. He looked down at the street coyly before looking back up at his prey, his eyes having changed from their normal teal colour to the darkest of blacks.
Rei straightened and regarded the two Tyrants, not betraying the full panic that was going on inside his head. When he had been vaguely planning this operation he had considered a few worst case scenarios. This was definitely one of them. If not the worst case. “Kid.” He said quietly, turning his head to the side but refusing to take his eyes off Brooklyn. “I suggest you run.”
Noah felt his limbs freeze up in panic as he looked at Brooklyn. He couldn’t name exactly what it was about Brooklyn that frightened him so much. Apart from the man’s eyes he seemed completely normal, at least physically. However he had an aura around him that made Noah want to get as far away from him as humanly possible. “Uh....” He said intelligently before his body kicked in. He turned and began to run.
Brooklyn titled his head to the side, watching Noah with a small frown on his face. “With all these people here it almost seems not worth it but-“ He shrugged, loosening one of the knives hidden in his sleeve so it fell into his hand. Quick as lightening, he drew his arm back and threw the knife, not bothering to pause for aim.
Rei gasped as time seemed to slow for him. He could see the knife flying through the air but knew that he wouldn’t be able to reach it in time to stop it from hitting Noah. “Duck!”
Noah looked over his shoulder, trying to see the danger before a heavy weight collided with him, sending him sprawling on the ground.
Kai winced as the impact of the fall jarred his system. He felt another, much sharper pain and looked at his thigh to see Brooklyn’s knife embedded firmly in it.. He closed his eyes as a fresh wave of pain from that injury reached his brain. “Ouch.” He said quietly, his teeth gritted. He looked down at Noah, checking him for any other injuries. “Curl up as small as possible.” Kai ordered, reaching to grab the gun he had stowed in the back of his pants.
“Th-thank-“ Noah began.
“Now.” Kai all but snarled. “ I’ll protect you but you need to help me.”
Rei blinked, trying to process what had happened. When his brain caught up he saw Kai on the ground with the knife in his leg. “Kai!” He called, his instincts telling him to run over to the other but his common sense telling him not to turn his back to Brooklyn. “Are you ok? Is the boy ok?”
“I have a knife sticking out of my leg, how do you think I feel?” Kai yelled back grumpily. “The kid’s fine.”
Rei suppressed the somewhat hysterical smile that wanted to spread across his face. If Kai could still be sarcastic he was fine.
Brooklyn smiled and nodded, a resigned amusement in his expression. “You know, Kai,” He said, reaching into his jacket with his right hand to retrieve three small knives. “If I didn’t know any better I would have called that almost heroic.”
“Brooklyn...” Rei said almost warningly, stepping between him and Kai. “You’ve already hurt him. He’s not going anywhere fast.”
Brooklyn chuckled to himself before looking at Rei directly. Rei swallowed the instinctive fear that rose in his throat and forced himself to stare back. “You see the thing is, Rei-.” Brooklyn began, another knife appearing in his left hand. “-I’ve always loved kicking people when they’re down.” His smile widened as he threw the larger knife.
Rei was ready for it this time. He watched as the knife came closer and knocked it off its intended path, a small smirk on his face. “You’re going to have to do better than tha-“
Kai’s low groan of pain alerted him to his mistake. Rei turned to see five new knives sticking out of his body, turning Kai into some kind of demented porcupine. Brooklyn had thrown the knives he was holding in his right hand while Rei was distracted.
“Kai!” Forgetting his resolve not to turn his back on Brooklyn, Rei ran to the bluenette where he was still hunching protectively over an obviously terrified Noah. “Kai! Can you hear me? Kai!” He called, desperation colouring his voice. If he hadn’t fallen for Brooklyn’s trick.... “Kai!”
“He’s fine.” Brooklyn said, a bored note creeping into his voice. Another knife had appeared in his hands and he set about cleaning underneath his nails with the tip of it. “I didn’t hit any vital points.” Another groan of pain seemed to confirm Brooklyn’s diagnosis. “He’ll just be in a bit of pain for... a while.” Brooklyn stopped in his actions and shrugged, an arrogant smirk on his face. “That is, of course, assuming you have a while.”
Rei turned toward Brooklyn and snarled, every bit the picture of the raging tiger within him. “Tala.” He said, his voice too calm. “Get Kai and the kid out of here. Now”
Rei didn’t bother to reach for his gun. It would be useless against someone like Brooklyn. Instead he let his rage take over, releasing the controls he had over the beast within him. His body began to glow, the glow turning into a blinding light before fading slowly. Noah watched the transformation with a kind of affixed horror normally associated with traffic accidents. Where Rei had been there was now something that was him, but at the same time wasn’t. The not-Rei shook out its long white hair, the black streaks throughout it almost glowing as much as the white. He flexed his claws and snarled at Brooklyn, showing off his elongated canines and crouching in preparation to pounce.
Brooklyn smirked, seeing Rei’s transformation. “Johnny.” He said calmly. Get Tala and Kai. Kill the kid. Or at least find their gateway. I’ll deal with him and come help when I’m done.” So saying he bent his knees in a crouch, mirroring Rei’s pose perfectly, his smile turning predatory as he adjusted his grip on the knife. “I won’t be long.”
~
Issac noticed Aiden and nodded,, signalling with his head for the youth to follow him. “Have you found anything new?” He asked in a whisper only Aiden could hear. “Anything I should know about?”
He held a small, folded piece of paper between his index and middle fingers, proffering it to Aiden “I got those names.” He said simply. Aiden had his own reasons for supporting Issac. Reasons Issac chose not to know about. What he did know was that the platinum-haired youth was invaluable when it came to collecting information and winning over supporters. He specialised in winning the support of those their organisation had bullied into obedience.

((ooh, half transformation? *is like having different levels of transformation* Rei is awesome btw. I’m going to assume they still have their bitbeast’s powers?))
Tala whipped his head around to stare at Rei. “What?” he exclaimed, “What do you mean take Kai and the boy and run? I can’t leave you here with him.”
He turned his head to scowl at Brooklyn. Leaving Rei here alone with that beast would be like he had handed his friend a death sentence. Sure, they’d probably all die if they stayed here but he really didn’t want to leave Rei to face that alone.
“Besides, Kai would never stand for it. If we’re leaving, you are coming with us,” he said defiantly before moving towards Kai and the boy. Kai didn’t look like he was in any shape to protest the order and Noah didn’t look like he was in any shape to understand just what the hell was going on. Tala felt sorry for the kid, this was probably a huge shock to the system, but he also slightly resented him. He was the whole reason that they were in this mess. To save this unknown boy’s arse.
He could just hear Rei in his head. ‘It wasn’t the boy’s fault, it was ours for being silly enough to stand up to Balcov and Voltaire on our own’.
He supposed also getting the boy and all three of them killed kind of defeated the purpose of a rescue mission.
He crouched down next to Kai and Noah, preparing to make a run for it anyways. Rei could be very persuasive in that form of his when he wanted to be.
“Ok kid,” he started addressing Noah, “Look at me. You’re going to have to forget everything you’ve ever known about the three of us and just trust me, ok? We’re trying to save your life here. You’ll have time to be stunned later, now I just want you to do as I say completely.”
He looked down the street and thought about what he should do. His first option was going to attract a lot of attention in the overworld, but maybe if he kept to the back roads, he wouldn’t be seen by that many people…
He looked back at Noah. “When I’m ready, and you’ll know when that is, your going to have to help Kai on to my back got it? And then you’ll have to cling to me, and Kai, like your life depended on it, which it kind of does. Understand me, kid?”
He looked down at Kai. “I hope you’re conscious enough to hear me as well Kai. Or at least hold onto my fur.”
Johnny grinned at Brooklyn’s request. “Excellent. And I half thought that you might be the only one who had any fun today.”
He turned his attention to Tala hunched over the other two and jumped into action. Literally.
He pushed off from the ground, releasing a bit of energy from the beast contained within him so he sailed over Brooklyn and Rei, somersaulting and landing behind them and Tala, blocking the path. His forearms and lower legs glowing and changing, revealing large, menacing claws from lizard-like hands and feet. His eyes slitted and his mouth was filled with pointed teeth.
“Don’t think you’re going anywhere Ivanov, not while I’m around,” he hissed, revealing a slitted tongue.
Tala scowled at him over his shoulder. “That’s what you think.” He placed his hand on the ground and concentrated on the Tyrant, sending out a layer of ice across the ground that crawled up Johnny’s legs and held him in place.
Johnny smirked and tried to take a step but was unable to move. Johnny snorted, completely undeterred by the attack. A little bit of ice wasn’t enough to stop him. He focused his power on his legs, heat starting to radiate out of them, melting the ice and freeing his legs.
Who did Tala think he was? Johnny could control fire, his ice would do nothing to him.
“Hah, nice try,” Johnny taunted. He took another step before ice froze him in his place yet again. It was uncomfortable for Johnny to heat up his limbs for any length of time, so there was always a space in time where Tala could freeze his legs again. Tala had put more energy into it this time so the ice was thicker and needed more time to melt. Johnny looked like he was standing in the middle of a huge cube of ice.
Johnny scowled at the other redhead. Tala just smirked and gave him a ‘oh, sorry, you expected me to give up?’ look.
While Johnny was preoccupied thawing himself out Tala busied himself with the escape plan.
“Ready?” he asked Noah without waiting for an answer. He let the beast inside him have complete control, his body started to glow until it was blinding. His body morphed and grew until Tala’s human outline was indistinguishable. The glowing slowly dimmed to reveal a large white wolf in Tala’s place. He was much larger than any real wolf, about the same as a horse. While Rei had only half-transformed himself, Tala had let his other side take over completely, deciding it would make for a quicker escape with two other people to look out for. He crouched down low to the ground, looking at Noah and nodding his head, hoping the boy would understand ‘get on’ and forget the fact that human’s didn’t normally turn into large beasts.
Oh God, he hoped this kid wasn’t someone who froze on the spot at crucial moments.
He watched Johnny while he waited for Noah to act.
Johnny gave an angry hiss under his breath, reaching for his gun and taking aim at Tala.
A wall of ice shot up in front of the wolf and the other two, cracking as a bullet hit it. Tala was going to pay for this outpouring of energy later he could just feel it. He looked at Noah again, hoping his animal eyes were showing some kind of pleading to hurry in them.
Johnny struggled to get out of the ice. He was standing in a pool of water but he couldn’t melt the ice fast enough to jump out of his enclosure, the water freezing back into ice. He bent down, firing up his fists and jamming them into the ice, melting it with a hiss. He would be out of this ice trap soon enough. ~
Aiden pushed off from the wall and followed the other man.
“Nothing of particular importance,” He answered back in a low whisper, taking the folded not from Issac, “But there is unrest in some of the supporters of Voltaire. With his death, they feel very… insecure with how this place is run.”
He smirked to himself.
“I think they fear for their own lives and are losing trust in their leader’s ability to run this place. You could use this to your advantage, tweak facts to suit yourself. Once the seed of doubt is there,” his eyes glittered as he spoke silkily, “it’s only too easy to manipulate them.”
He looked down at the folded not in his for a moment, before slipping it in to his pocket. He would read it later. A sinister grin spread over his face. “Mmm, more fun. I’ll get on it right away, unless you have more pressing matters for me?”
((I’m assuming they meant the legendary salamander for Johnny’s bitbeast and not the real one. That is quite small. And not very menacing *Looks up* see i can crack 1k too xD))

Rei leapt at Brooklyn, a purely animal snarl escaping his lips. He collided with an unresisting Brooklyn, sending them both tumbling to the ground. Rei let out a yell of pain as he felt his skin open on the side Brooklyn had been holding the knife. He looked down to see that it was only a minor cut and stood, turning to face Brooklyn again.
Brooklyn had rolled with the impact of their fall and was standing calmly a few metres away, waiting for Rei to attack him again.
Rei attacked again, running at Brooklyn with his claws unsheathed.
Brooklyn sidestepped a fraction of a second too late, Rei’s claws grazing his arm. He gasped, more out of shock than from the pain of the wound. Brooklyn looked down at the small line of blood on his otherwise perfect clothing with a look of almost wonder on his face. He turned towards Rei with a slightly-too-wide smile on his face.
Rei barely had time to blink before Brooklyn moved. Brooklyn easily swiped away the Arm Rei instinctively raised to protect himself before seizing Rei’s shoulder in an iron grip, pulling his torso down to connect sharply with Brooklyn’s knee.
Brooklyn used his leverage on Rei’s shoulder to spin him, catching his two clawed hands in one of his own , holding them safely out to the side. With his free hand, Brooklyn brought the knife he had been holding up to rest firmly against Rei’s exposed throat.
“I’m impressed,” He said pleasantly. “I can’t remember the last person who actually managed to hit me.” Brooklyn smiled. “Though that may be because he didn’t live very long afterwards.”
Rei snarled and fought against Brooklyn’s iron grip on his wrists, manoeuvring as much as he could without moving his head or neck. Brooklyn put more pressure on the knife he was holding against Rei’s throat. A small line of blood appearing. “Rei.” He said warningly. “The only reason that you aren’t dead yet is because you may yet prove useful. This does not mean, however, that I can’t have an ‘accident’. You see, Rei,” Brooklyn continued, his voice turning into a silky purr. “It doesn’t matter to me if you live or die. I have a distinct impression, however, that it matters a great deal to you.”
Rei stilled.
Brooklyn smiled like he’d just received a birthday present. “Excellent! Now I want one more thing from you.”
“And that would be?” Rei asked testily, glad that Tala and Kai had gotten away before this. Also that that hadn’t seen him caught quite so easily. Rei would be the first to admit that Brooklyn outclassed him but it was just embarrassing to be in this situation.
“I need you to change back for me.”
Rei snorted. “So you can get rid of me and go hunt down my team before they have a chance to outrun your lackey? Not likely. We’re staying like this until either he comes back unsuccessfully or I can’t sustain this form anymore. Though, I can tell you now which one’s going to come first.” Rei smirked, at least he had this.
Brooklyn let out a bark of surprised laughter. “Oh! I like you!” He said jovially. “You’ve almost made this whole thing worthwhile. Your loyalty won’t get you very far, though.” He advised, his tone turning serious. “Trust me. I’ve tested out that theory a few times. I have a different suggestion, however. How about, in order to pass the time, we conduct a small experiment? Tell me, do you know how much pain someone has to be in before they lose the ability to change?”
Rei froze, apprehension making his body tense.
“I’m taking that as a no?” Brooklyn said pleasantly. “Let’s find out, shall we?” He grinned as the darkness continued to rise within him, small tendrils of darkness beginning to form on his skin. One of these wrapped itself securely around Rei’s wrists, giving Brooklyn back his hand.
Rei’s skin crawled as he felt his new bindings settle. It felt wrong like something that had just come out of a fire and yet was stone cold. Wrong
Ignoring his captive for the moment, apart from the knife still firmly against Rei’s throat, Brooklyn fished within his clothes to find another knife. His arm snaked around Rei’s waist and pulled him closer so Rei was pulled flush against Brooklyn, like lovers but with a much more sinister purpose. Brooklyn ran the tip of the knife from the bottom of Rei’s waistline up until the midpoint of his chest, the clothing parting under the keen blade.
Brooklyn smirked as Rei’s breathing became more uneven as he brought the knife to rest gently against Rei’s bare stomach. “So tell me, Rei, has your loyalty done you any good?” He pressed on the knife, cutting a long gash and getting a yelp of pain from Rei. “Brooklyn removed the knife and held it up for both Rei and himself to see. “It looks kind of uneven, doesn’t it?” He asked, referring to the way one side of the knife was stained with Rei’s blood. “Should fix that.” He said to himself, flipping the knife and bringing it down on the other side of Rei’s bare stomach.
Brooklyn grinned as he got another pained cry from Rei. “Much better. Now, are you ready to give up?” He asked.
Rei let out a harsh bark of laughter. “For that?” He asked derisively. “I’ve been hurt more in my sleep and not woken up.”
Brooklyn chuckled. “I do like you.” He said, this time resting the tip of the knife gently against Rei’s thigh. He paused for a second, sizing up his target and adjusting so he didn’t cause any serious harm before pushing the knife into Rei’s leg up to it’s hilt.
This earned him a scream. Brooklyn pulled the knife out slowly, enjoying the way Rei flinched, trying to get away from the pain and pushing himself against Brooklyn.
Brooklyn paused, feeling a hard object tucked into the back of Rei’s pants. “What is this?” He mused, pulling up Rei’s already ruined shirt roughly to reveal the gun Rei had stashed there earlier. Brooklyn clicked his tongue in disappointment. “A gun, Rei?” He asked, stashing his knife back in his clothes, not before wiping Rei’s blood off it on to the front of what was left of Rei’s shirt.
“You have no idea how much I hate guns.” Brooklyn said like a disappointed parent, he flicked the safety switch off and rested his arm casually on Rei’s shoulder. He pulled the trigger, aiming at Rei’s other leg.
Rei let out another scream before his leg’s buckled. Brooklyn quickly removed the knife from Rei’s neck as he fell forward, his body a dull shimmer as he transformed back, hitting the ground unconscious.
“I did like you, you know.” Brooklyn said almost sadly as he pulled the gun apart, throwing the bullet clip away.
~
Noah nodded dumbly as Tala spoke to him, knowing in his heart that the redhead was genuine. Though his mind still argued, reminding him that only a few minutes ago he had been helping identify these people as murder suspects, Noah found himself willing to go along with any plan Tala came up with. Especially if it meant lack of death. He didn’t particularly want to die.
He balked slightly when Tala transformed into a wolf in front of his eyes. Trusting a suspected murderer he could handle- just. Trusting what looked like, for all intents and purposes, a large wild animal was another matter entirely. It was only when Tala looked at him imploringly that Noah saw his eyes. They remained the same unchanged bright blue of the person he had been taking to earlier. “Alright.” He said, more to himself than to anyone else.
He carefully extricated himself from under Kai, trying not to jolt and aggravate his rescuer’s wounds any more than necessary. Once he was out he grabbed Kai under the armpits and half-dragged him over to Tala, unable to lift Kai’s weight. He winced as an almost animalistic yell of pain escaped from Kai’s lips. Noah felt his hands grow warm as fresh blood escaped from Kai’s wounds.
“Kai. He said urgently. “I don’t know if you can hear ne but I’m going to move you one more time. After that I need you to hold on to Tala’s fur as tightly as possible.”
Kai looked at him with pain-filled eyes, managing a small nod before he was once again overtaken by the pain of Noah dragging him on to Tala’s back. When the pain abated slightly Kai flexed his fingers, feeling Tala’s coarse fur underneath them. He burrowed his hands deeply into the fur, seeking to touch Tala’s skin. Feeling the firm barrier Kai summoned the last of his strength. When fully transformed they could only communicate via their thoughts and then only reliably through direct contact. While communication was possible when they were in close proximity to each other it was much less certain and Kai had to be heard.
Rei. He sent, his mind going to Rei as he had last seen him before the pain had taken over. Did we get Rei? As his last scrap of energy was used up, Kai let out a small sigh, slumping unconscious on Tala’s back.
Oblivious of this Noah climbed on behind Kai, making sure to grip Tala’s body with his legs, He buried one hand into Tala’s fur and used the other to get a firm grip on Kai. He carefully avoided the knives still protruding from the body of his protector. He wasn’t willing to remove those knives, not yet. Without any medical help it was likely that Kai would bleed out if they were removed.
~
Issac nodded, thinking about the news of unrest Aiden had given him. “If you can, I’d like you to look into those rumours that Voltaire wasn’t killed by the rebels.” He smiled consiprationally at Aiden. “Of course, if you can’t find anything of substance... Wait, I’m underestimating you, aren’t I?” He asked, the smile turning into a smirk. “You will find something, won’t you? Of course, if anyone asks be sure to tell them exactly what you’re looking into. Full disclosure is necessary in matters such as this.”

Tala waited patiently as the other two settled on his back. He mentally winced when Kai asked him if they had Rei with them. He wasn’t ready to break the bad news to Kai that Rei was most likely sacrificing himself for the greater good. Luckily for him, Kai had passed out before any kind of answer had been given.
The wolf glanced back at Rei and Brooklyn for a moment, watching as the two stared each other down.
He shook his head and turned back, slowly rising to his feet. Now was not the time to angst. He had more pressing things to worry about.
Johnny’s hands slipped through the ice easily, creating a large enough hole for him to jump out of the ice. The energy he was using to melt the ice was taxing on his body but he knew that the rebel would be in the same state as him, if he could just trap Tala somehow for long enough and make him continue to fight back, the wolf would be unable to stay conscious and collapse.
The redhead sprang away from the ice, landing on unfrozen ground. He walked towards the ice barrier Tala had built, preparing to melt it to the ground.
“Don’t think you can get away from me that easily,” He hissed.
Tala snarled in response. Come and get me Johnny.
The ice wall shattered sending hundreds of shards flying in Johnny’s direction, forcing the Tyrant to raise his arms in defence. Tala used the opportunity to spring away, running away from the scene behind him without a second look.
Johnny hissed in frustration, before chasing after the wolf. He let a little more of the beast inside of him out, growing a tail. It was excellent for balance when he was chasing someone and these streets were deserted enough that very few people would see him. In all likelihood, they wouldn’t believe what they saw anyways.
Tala raced through the streets, mind brainstorming as he went. He had to find someway to lose Johnny. They would have more chance of escaping if their pursuer didn’t know which portal they went through. He looked around his surroundings, also trying to find a way that would be less in view of the general public, these deserted streets would end soon.
The rooves of the buildings beside him caught his eye. They were all flat. If he could find a way up then he’d be able to make his escape without any interference from any other innocent overworlders.
Yes! He grinned as he spotted a balcony up ahead, making a leap for it. He landed with a thud, startling the owner inside. Tala didn’t waste anytime, immediately jumping off the balcony and sailing through the air to land on the roof of the opposite building. He briefly checked that his two passengers were still holding on before sprinting across the rooves.
The man inside the apartment, walked out onto his balcony, coffee-mug in hand, blinking after the large wolf that had just disappeared. He didn’t have much time to think before Johnny jumped onto the balcony almost landing on the overworlder. The redhead paid no attention to the man and jumped onto the same roof as Tala, proceeding to follow.
The man blinked again before looking down into his mug for a moment. He then tipped the remaining contents over the balcony and walked back inside, shaking his head. It was time for him to see a shrink, or buy a different brand of coffee.
Tala mentally calculated the direction he needed to go in order to get back to the Underworld. He remembered Taki telling them in a situation like this to head for an unused portal, away from their rebel headquarters. Tala understood what he meant, knowing that it would be harder for any Tyrant’s to track them back to the bases the further away the portal was. The wolf cursed mentally, realising he was going in the wrong direction to get to the closest, and best, portal. He skidded to a stop before changing directions, jumping to a roof beside him.
Johnny smirked when Tala changed direction. He took the opportunity to send a fireball towards Tala. It grazed the wolf’s rump as he was mid-air. Tala gave a yelp of surprise and landed awkwardly on the other rooftop. The tyrant was able to catch-up to his prey with the distraction and landed opposite.
“I told you, you wouldn’t be able to get away from me,” he said with a smirk.
Tala straightened himself out before turning to Johnny, his upper lip turned up in a snarl. Johnny hissed back, raising his arms in a fighting stance and letting flames engulf his claws.
Tala eyed the claws warily as they started to circle each other. A growl rumbled through his body. On any other day he would have started to attack Johnny, but today he was more worried about getting his passengers to safety to try anything.
Johnny saw the hesitation and smiled, immediately launching into an attack, claws raised. Tala jumped back quickly, but wasn’t quick enough to avoid Johnny’s swipe. Scorching hot claws connected with the wolf’s cheek, slicing through flesh and burning the surrounding skin at the same time, tearing a yelp from Tala.
The redhead started to walk slowly towards the wolf, knowing that Tala had no escape and wasn’t willing to do any fancy fighting.
Tala backed up slowly as the tyrant came closer, a trickly of blood dripping of his chin. He was panting, a lot of energy had already been used up with the running and creation of ice, and the pain from his wound wasn’t making things any better. He way have been able to take more than the average human but he had his limits.
He took another step back, almost falling as his back foot connected with thin air, his foot scratching against the edge of the building as it fought for purchase. He whipped his head around to look at the edge of the building.
He was trapped, and Johnny knew it.
“You’re stuck now, you have no where else to go,” Johnny said, “Why don’t you just hand the boy over to me? Would make things a lot easier.”
Tala let out another snarl, trying to think of a plan.
He suddenly gave Johnny a wolfy grin. Johnny raised an eyebrow at the sudden expression.
Johnny was wrong. Tala could always jump.
Bye Johnny. Tala said through thoughts to the Tyrant, making the other frown in confusion.
Tala pushed himself off the side of the building, backwards, sending ice out from his body to wrap around Noah and Kai, keeping them in place as he fell through the air. The ice would be uncomfortable for a brief time, but it was better than falling off Tala’s back and to their death.
They landed with a thud. Tala glanced behind him to check on Noah and Kai while letting the ice fall away from them. Satisfied with their condition, he turned to head for a portal.
Johnny let out a snarl as he saw Tala jump over the edge. He ran over and looked down, seeing the wolf facing away from him and Noah’s back in full view.
He smirked, another idea forming in his head. His mission was to kill Noah, and right now he was in a great position to strike at the overworlder’s back.
He jumped with a hiss, claws raised, ready to impale through Noah’s back and into his heart.
Tala whipped his head around, seeing Johnny fall and made a split second decision. He moved his weight onto his front legs and kicked out with his hind legs, connecting with Johnny’s chest and throwing him against the wall of the building.
Johnny hit with a loud crack, breaking the brick around him, before crumpling to the ground, unconscious.
Tala snorted in defiance, before heading for the nearest portal.
~
Aiden glanced over at Issac. “Of course, have I ever let you down?”
He chose that moment to veer down a side corridor, leaving Issac on his own. The platinum haired youth had people skills similar to Johnny’s. They could both sway the thoughts of whomever they were talking to suit what was needed. Johnny was charismatic; he could talk to large crowds and influence them with words, with propaganda. Aiden preferred to work in secret, twisting any facts he could find. If there was something that his subject knew that Aiden could use to his advantage, he would find it without fail. Manipulating people was amusing and gave him a sense of control.
Aiden would use anything he could find if it meant getting back at Balcov and what he had done to his family. Issac also wanted to be rid of Balcov. They were similar in that respect and Aiden found himself loyal to both Issac’s cause and the man himself.
For now, he was willing to follow Issac’s directions in preparation for their final attack on Balcov.
Aiden smirked as he disappeared into the darkness.
~
Lilith sighed.
Taki looked up from his work and stared at her. “Something wrong?”
“I’m a little bored,” she answered.
He shrugged. “Sorry, can’t help you with that.”
Lilith rolled her eyes. She had moved from where she had been sitting near the window and was now sitting on the opposite side of Taki’s desk, leaning on her arms. Taki had moved to sit behind the desk, busying himself with reports from sources around the city. She watched him flip threw papers, trying to keep her mind off the world outside the window.
She had quickly found out that her captor hadn’t been bluffing when he said it was dangerous outside. A loud commotion from outside had interrupted her dozing earlier and she had been horrified at the amount of violence that was being used. Taki has wandered over at one point and told her that she probably didn’t want to watch it. She had argued with him that someone should put a stop to it but he just shook his head telling her that he really couldn’t do anything. That was the norm in this world and it would be over soon.
Most likely when someone died.
Lilith had moved to a chair by the desk then. She saw dead people most days but actually seeing someone being killed still made her queasy.
Taki had continued to watch the scene outside with a troubled look on his face until it had quietened down and he returned to his desk. He didn’t like what was happening but he really couldn’t do anything at the moment. Not by himself at least. Maybe if he had Tala or Kai to back him up but they weren’t here.
Lilith picked up a discarded pen and started fiddling with it.
Taki watched her, bored with his reports.
“You don’t seem very unhappy for someone who was practically abducted,” he stated suddenly.
Lilith looked up, surprised that he was attempting conversation. She had figured him for someone who didn’t like talking much since they had been in silence for the majority of the day.
“Well,” she started, “You don’t seem like a normal kidnapper. You’re not particularly scary. In fact, I feel pretty comfortable in here.”
“Oh?”
She put down the pen and folded her hands. “Well, you haven’t tied me up anywhere, I seem to be able to do whatever I feel like, you’re not assaulting me, or demanding that I do things. If you were trying to scare me into obeying you, you would have forced me to watch what was happening outside and threaten me with it, but it seems you did the exact opposite and tried to protect me from it.”
She shook her head. “I feel safer in here, thank you very much. Even if you are the oddest kidnapper I’ve ever seen.”
Taki snorted. “Well, maybe I’m a nice guy who just overreacted when you appeared.”
Lilith laughed. “Speaking of, why did you take me? It’s not like you can hold me for ransom or anything.” Who would he send the ransom note to anyways? Bryan?
“Like I said, I overreacted,” Taki answered before going back to his reports, “I had a secret to keep. You surprised me, that’s all. I have no idea who you are, honestly.”
“My name’s Lilith,” she said, “I’m the detective who’s trying to catch you.”
Taki looked up when she said her name, disregarding the other information she had given him.
“What?” Lilith blinked, “What’s that look for?”
He shook his head. “Nothing, you’re name sounds familiar. Probably met someone else with it.”
“Really? That’s odd. I’ve never met anyone else with it,” she said, “Well, not yet anyways.
The silence stretched between the two for a while. Lilith sighed again, before getting up and walking around the room. She walked around on Taki’s right side, away from the window.
Taki tried to ignore her but it didn’t work. He turned his head so he could face her.
“What are you doing?”
She frowned at him. “Walking around, my legs have gone to sleep.”
“Can’t you do it on that side?” he nodded to the opposite side of the room.
“No,” she shook her head, “I’m trying to avoid that window. Why do you want me over there?”
“You know you really don’t have a say in the matter,” Taki said, “considering you’re the captive here. I want you over that side so I can see you properly.”
Lilith snorted, walking over to the desk and leaning over it.
“Well, you wouldn’t have that problem if you moved this,” She flicked the fringe covering his right eye completely, “out of the way.”
He scowled. “That’s not the reason I can’t-”
He was interrupted as the front door crashed open. Lilith whipped her head around to face the noise. Taki shot up from his chair and quickly made his way towards the door leading out to the foyer.
“What was that?” Lilith said, following him.
Tala had kicked open the front door, dragging Kai through it.
“Lie him down, not on his back,” he told Noah who was holding the other side of Kai. Tala fought with the haze threatening to take over his mind. It was always the way after a transformation. As soon as he changed back, he would have a few second of normal thought before the after-effects of the transformation completely took over him. He wouldn’t remember later, but he was sure he could act pretty embarrassing before he eventually passed out. Especially if the way Taki acted after a transformation was anything to go by.
“Kai!” Taki exclaimed as he walked out of the office and towards the three. The sight of all those knives sticking out of the bluenette was not pleasing.
“Noah!” Lilith quickly walked over to the boy, confused, “What are you doing here?”
Tala could feel his knees giving way and started to fall. Taki saw the fall coming and caught the redhead before him hitting the ground.
“Tala, are you ok?” He asked, looking down at the other.
“Pffffff,” Tala let out, still conscious, “Of course I’m fine. Hey, when did you get so tall anyways? You’re like, towering over me.”
Taki rolled his eyes. Tala had obviously transformed before, so he was going to be useless to get information out of at the moment.
“And I could have sworn that I brought the pin cushion over there to the rebel base but I must have got lost cos I don’t remember any females being around here when I left. Did you go to a brothel Taki? That’s very unusual for you y’know.”
Taki sighed. “No, Tala, you did come home.”
He laid Tala’s head down gently on the ground before moving to kneel beside Kai. The redhead had enough energy to lift his head up and look around.
“Oh. So you brought someone over here?” He laughed, “He he, didn’t know you had it in you Taki.” Tala then burst into a fit of giggles.
Taki ignored the redhead, instead looking over Kai’s wounds and the knives stick out of him. He was used to Tala doing this.
Lilith, on the other hand, wasn’t. She whipped her head around to look at Tala, perplexed.
“What did he just call me? Is he drunk or something?” She watched the redhead warily, not sure what to make of him.
“That’s a good way to describe it,” Taki said, taking off his jacket and bunching it up, “Just ignore him.”
He looked down at Kai with a pained expression. “I’m sorry Kai,” he said, “this is going to hurt.”
He wrapped a hand around one of the knife handles and pulled, immediately cover the wound with his jacket, aiding the blood to clot.
Lilith’s eyes widened completely when Taki pulled the knife out.
“What are you doing?” she exclaimed, “You can’t pull them out! You might damage something internally! He needs professionally medical attention, not you.”
Taki scowled at her. “He’ll be fine. He has faster healing capabilities than normal humans so it’ll be able to fix itself shortly. Besides, there’s no where we could take him to get help.”
He lifted up his jacket to show her. Kai’s wound had already started to close up.
“The skin probably healed around the knife on the way here making it more painful when I pulled it out. Probably the only downside to this whole thing. If I pull them out one at a time and make sure the blood clots first, he also won’t bleed to death, ok? Just calm down. I know what I’m doing.”
He turned back to Kai and pulled out another knife, covering the wound with his jacket immediately after. Kai was still going to be pretty sore after this, but he would heal without any complications.
Lilith blinked. “What do you mean ‘than normal humans’? He looks human to me.”
“You know,” Tala interrupted, “You’re really pretty. Too bad I don’t swing that way though.”
Lilith looked back at Tala. “Uh, th-thank you? I think?”
“Tala,” Taki said calmly, still focused on Kai, “Go to sleep.”
Tala managed to raise his arm in a mock salute. “Yes Sir, Right away Sir,” he said before falling unconscious.
Lilith blinked again. Not quite believing what she was seeing. Maybe she was still dreaming after all. Drunken redheads, guys with knifes sticking out of them, inhuman healing powers….
“He’s extremely compliant in that state,” Taki explained before turning to look at Noah, one hand still covering Kai’s wound, “You, kid, Noah is it? What happened here? And where’s Rei? The guy with the long black hair?”

Brooklyn looked dispassionately down at Rei’s crumpled form, a plan already forming in his mind. With a tilt of his head, the darkness that had bound Rei’s hands undid itself and snaked its way beneath Rei’s prone body before spreading out and rising, carrying Rei.
Brooklyn then paused to strengthen the shield he had created around his and Rei’s fight. Although it was unlikely that anyone would come off the main street and run into their fight they hadn’t been in an isolated enough place that Brooklyn could run the risk of any Good Samaritan hearing them so he had created a shield around them that would contain any sound. Now he added more of his strength to it, hiding them completely from view. It wouldn’t hold against any close inspection, but to the casual glance they would appear as simply a very deep shadow, blending into their surroundings.
Nodding in satisfaction, Brooklyn began to walk down the alleyway, toward the nearest fire escape. He needed to find Johnny and the fastest way would be to have a bird’s eye view of the streets he had been chasing Tala down. He swiftly climbed up the ladder and jumped on to the roof, Rei’s stretcher following him at a more sedate pace. Brooklyn felt the drain his energy as he began to walk across the roof and paused, fascinated. He had never had occasion to use his powers to the point where he actually felt the drain on his strength. It was an interesting feeling.
Brooklyn shrugged and began walking in the direction he had seen Johnny run in., walking along the edge of the building and scanning the street below, jumping between buildings when he reached the end of one.
When he found Johnny Brooklyn rolled his eyes. “Useless.” He grumbled as he sent some more tendrils of darkness to carry Johnny’s body up to join Rei floating behind Brooklyn. “Is it too much to ask that you stay conscious?” He asked the redhead as he turned in the direction of the nearest gateway, not expecting an answer. “I’m not a medic.” He grumbled under his breath.
~
Brooklyn stepped through the gateway, greeted by the same nervous technician who had sent them off. The technician’s eyes widened as Rei’s and Johnny’s bodies followed Brooklyn through the gateway. “Is that-“ He began before being silenced with a look from Brooklyn.
Brooklyn released Johnny’s body unceremoniously, letting the redhead fall to the floor none-too-gently. He lowered Rei’s body gently before releasing the strands of darkness that had been carrying him. “Rei Kon.” He said flatly. “He won’t wake up for a while but I suggest that you confine him and call headquarters.”
The technician nodded nervously, unnerved by Brooklyn’s eyes which were still completely black. “Yes, Sir. Certainly, Sir. Would you like to clean up while I call a transport to take you and your partner back to headquarters?” He asked, eying the blood that stained Brooklyn’s otherwise white outfit with a nervous lick of his lips.
Brooklyn paused for a second before nodding. “I’ll do that.” He said with an air of decisiveness about him. “If you could revive my partner before the transport arrives, that would be good.” He said offhandedly as he began walking toward the bathrooms provided at every gateway. “I’ll require another outfit and some bandages. Leave them outside. I’ll leave my old clothes there. Burn them.” He ordered before walking into the bathroom and shutting the door.
The technician visibly wilted with relief before setting about calling the transport and doing as Brooklyn ordered.
Brooklyn sighed heavily as he closed the door, releasing the darkness that had taken a hold of him. He felt his knees weaken and fell to the floor, his body beginning to fill with a slow and steady ache.
Brooklyn gritted his teeth and pushed himself off the ground, ignoring the fatigue that made the room spin slightly. He had never had cause to tap into his powers as much as he had today so this was a new experience for him.
Brooklyn began to unbutton his jacket, concentrating on the simple task in order to block out the ache as his body protested the transformation. He shrugged out of the jacket, making a face as it caught on his wound. That was something else he wasn’t used to.
Brooklyn heard a soft knock on the door and put his hand over his face, composing himself. Part of the reason that he was so feared was that transforming had never really affected him. He had such a large source of power to draw from that using his powers normally did nothing to dent it. Not so now.
Brooklyn walked slowly to the door before opening it. He grabbed the bundle of clothes offered without looking at them. “Is my partner awake yet?” He asked, also taking the bandage he had requested from the frightened technician.
The technician shook his head. “N-not yet sir. I’m going to go wake him now. He should be conscious by the time you’re finished. The transport is on its way.”
Brooklyn nodded once before withdrawing and shutting the door in the technician’s face.
The technician’s hand came up to cover his face as he tried to regain composure. Brooklyn’s eyes had returned to their normal teal colour, meaning that he must have changed back. Yet he seemed as if nothing had happened to him.
The technician shuddered to himself as he hurried back into the main chamber. That just wasn’t normal. He sighed as he reached the room. He had moved Rei to a small, secure room before he had done anything else. It wouldn’t do for an angry terrorist to wake up somewhere where he couldn’t be controlled.
This, of course, left Johnny. The technician hurried over to the redhead’s prone form and crouched next to him, unsure of what to do. Normally, if someone was knocked unconscious in the overworld they generally didn’t come back breathing. “Um... Wake up?” He tried, shaking Johnny’s shoulder gently. “Johnny?” He tried a little louder. “Johnny? You need to wake up.”
~
Balcov stared at Issac for a second, absorbing the information. “Are they sure?” He asked. “Is it really Rei Kon? How?” A smirk began to spread across his face. He was used to always knowing who was responsible for any attacks against his organisation and not being able to catch the culprits. To actually have one of the ringleaders within his power was... new.
Issac nodded curtly, a matching smirk on his face. “Brooklyn and the gateway technician have confirmed that it really is him. We’re not clear on how we got this lucky yet but I’m sure they’ll explain as soon as they get back here.”
Balcov’s eyes narrowed. “Brooklyn and the technician? What about Johnny?”
“He seems to have gotten into a fight of some description and is unconscious at the moment. They’re bringing him around now so he should be ready to give his report when they get back. I’ve sent out a transport from Brooklyn and Johnny and a secure vehicle to transport Rei in. Apparently he’s also unconscious but I don’t think we want to take any chances with this one.”
Balcov nodded. “You’re right. When they get back I want you to send Johnny in to me to report. See to it that Rei is...uncomfortable. I will decide what to do with him after I’ve found out all of the details.”
“What about Brooklyn, sir?” Issac asked, biting back his anger at being excluded from finding out first hand what had happened. “Do you want him as well?”
Balcov snorted in amusement. “He wouldn’t come even if I ordered him. He’s done his job. That’s all that matters. Make sure you relieve him of his weapons when he comes in. He won’t give them up voluntarily but he should give them up when you ask for them.”
Issac nodded. “Yes sir. Is there anything else you want done?”
Balcov shook his head. “No. Once I find out how this all happened I can plan a strategy to deal with this. It’s a great opportunity for us to both find out more about the rebels and to undermine them by using Rei as a bargaining chip. But first” He held up one finger “We must find all of the facts.”
~
Noah paled as he watched Taki pull the knives out of Kai’s back. “I-“ He started before turning away. He couldn’t watch that. He didn’t think he could handle seeing the results of his stupidity. If he had just run when Rei had told him to instead of trying to fight him they wouldn’t be here now.
“Um...” He bit his lip and frowned, trying to make sense of the second situation he had been in in as many days. “There were two guys. They both had red hair... I can’t remember...” He said, trailing off. “I think Rei said one of their names was Brooklyn?” He shook his head. “It all happened so fast.”
“Those knives you’re pulling out? They were meant for me.” A smile spread across Noah’s face, making him look slightly manic. “I should be the one on that table, you know.” He said, beginning to laugh, his voice high pitched and breaking. “But they didn’t hit me. He saved me.” Noah continued to laugh, tears beginning to form at the corners of his eyes.
“Why would he do that?” Noah asked, turning to look at Taki. “There’s no reason why. I’ve never done anything worth saving me for. I shouldn’t be alive right now. I wouldn’t be if they hadn’t come. I don’t know why they came after me, do you?” He asked, the laughter suddenly stopping. “If I haven’t done anything worth saving me for why am I worth killing?” He asked, the laughter stopping suddenly.
“Rei stayed behind to keep Brooklyn- the scary one- busy while we got away. I don’t know what happened to him after that. Tala got rid of the other guy and brought us here...” Noah trailed off and looked over at Taki. “Do you think he’s still alive?” He asked quietly “Why did he save me?” He asked barely audibly, looking at the ground. “Do you know why?”
His hand came up to touch the tears that hadn’t stopped with the laughter. “Oh.” He said shortly, his body curling in on itself. He wrapped his arms around his knees as they came up to his chest and rested his head on them. “Oh.”

The redhead’s hand suddenly clamped onto the guard’s on his shoulder. His eyes snapped open and he pinned the other man with a glare.
“Why are you touching me?” he spat out.
Johnny was never in a good mood after he transformed or immediately after he woke up from one. It was just one of the quirks of transformation. The normally personable crowd pleaser was extremely irritable. The dull thud of a headache behind his eyes wasn’t helping.
Add to that the fact that Johnny had failed at his mission and lost their target to the rebels. They may have captured a rebel themselves but the failure was holding on tightly to Johnny’s mind.
And he was pissed.
He glance around the room quickly. A snarl was let out when he couldn’t find what he was looking for.
“Where’s Brooklyn?”
~
Taki’s hand froze in mid air. He was about to grab for the last knife in Kai’s back before one name stopped him.
He stared at Noah, startled. “Brooklyn?”
He shook his head before continuing with Kai’s medical attention, speaking as he went.
“You were saved because that’s what Rei would have wanted. You didn’t deserve to die so he wanted to make sure you were saved.”
A lip quirked as he looked down at the man’s battered back below him. “And this guy would have done anything Rei had said.”
Lilith’s eyebrows shot up as Noah broke down. Not knowing what else to do, she pulled him against her chest and stroked his hair. Her mother had always calmed her down this way when she was upset long ago. Just being held, without any words, did wonders sometimes.
Taki pulled the fabric away from the last wound in Kai’s back, satisfied it had healed enough that he wouldn’t bleed to death. He sat back on his heels and shook his head again.
“Brooklyn,” he breathed, “You actually ran into Brooklyn. s**t.”
Lilith’s eyebrows furrowed.
“What’s so bad about that?”
Taki glanced up at her. “He’s,” he started, “very… dangerous. I’m surprised anyone came back alive.”
Lilith’s eyes widened. What did these people do down here? Was it some sort of gang wars.
“So, do you think this Rei person is alive?” she echoed Noah’s question.
Taki shook his head. “I hope.”

The technician all but exploded backwards. While not quite as frightening as Brooklyn was, Johnny was still very intimidating when he wanted to be. “I- Sorry.” He mumbled before looking over his shoulder at the corridor he had come down. “Brooklyn is-“
“Right here.” Brooklyn said calmly, standing next to the technician, his arms folded over his borrowed shirt.
The technician let out an undignified squeak and all but ran from the room. He didn’t want to be near anyone who could appear anywhere seemingly at will. Especially not if their appearance was normally the last thing their victims saw.
He looked down at Johnny with a raised eyebrow. “I held up my end of the deal.” He said coolly. “Rei is in our custody.” He paused for a second, closing his eyes to gather his thoughts. “However, when I found you not only were you wedged into a wall, unconscious, but there was a decided lack of that kid’s body.”
Brooklyn scowled. “Would you like to explain to me how you, not only, failed at our mission, but were incapacitated by a giant mutt who has not one, but two other people to worry about?”
The technician mutter a quick prayer before poking his head back into the room. “Uh... Your Transport is here.”
Brooklyn looked up and nodded. “Alright. Rei is following us in a separate vehicle?”
“Yes Sir. It should be coming shortly.”
“Good.” Brooklyn said quietly before bending and hauling Johnny to his feet. “Come on. You’re going to explain this.”
~
Noah started as he was pulled against Lilith before relaxing and burying his head in her shoulder.
He somewhat recognised her from the police station a lifetime ago but right now all he cared about was the warm arms around him and the shirt that continued to soak up the traitorous tears still leaking from his eyes. “I’m sorry.” He whispered quietly.
Kai groaned quietly as Taki removed the cloth from the last room. “Owwww.” He groaned, his eyes fluttering open. “ Can someone please remind me never to do that again?” He croaked before pausing, a frown marring his features. “...And get me a drink of water?”
Kai closed his eyes and sighed, mentally checked off his aches and pains. Though the wounds weren’t life-threatening, it would be a few days before he was able to move without pain. As it was Kai didn’t think he’d be moving anywhere fast that day.
“Rei?” He asked, the effort making him wince slightly. “Is Rei here?”

Johnny pulled himself away harshly from Brooklyn's grasp.
"Thanks," He spat out, "But i don't need to be told what to do by the likes of you."
He started heading towards the transport that had arrived for them.
"You are no my superior," he said, "You're just a tool. Something Balcov uses to his advantage."
He reached the car, opening the door and climbing in before slamming the door behind him. He probably wouldn't have said any of that if he had been his normal self, but he wasn't altogether at the moment. Curse Brooklyn and his ability to be unaffected by his abilities. Curse Brooklyn and his cocky attitude. Of course he was going to explain it, did he really think that Johnny didn't know that? The 'babysitter' always reported back to Balcov, not Brooklyn.
If Johnny wasn't in a bad mood he wouldn't have thought that perhaps Balcov was scared of Brooklyn.
If he had been in a better mood, he would have been thinking that Brooklyn was probably going to kill him right about now.
Oh well, that was life. Johnny was a little sick of performing to a crowd to make them follow Balcov. He would rather have a real conversation with someone for once rather than sucking up to superiors or the public in general. He was getting bored with his duties. He wanted some fun.
Maybe he was just alone.
~
"It's ok," Lilith soothed the boy, "It's not your fault, ok?"
Taki grimaced at Kai, internally debating whether he felt like breaking the news to the bluenette just yet. Kai would have to find out eventually and prolonging that moment wasn't going to help anyone.
He wasn't ready for Kai's reaction just yet though.
"I'll go get you that drink," he finally said before getting up and heading towards the kitchen. He would tell Kai when he came back, yes, that was the plan.
Lilith quirked an eyebrow at Taki has he walked away. Coward.
She glanced over at Kai and watched him.

Brooklyn smirked and followed Johnny at a leisurely pace. He got into the car and looked over at the redhead, “Someone’s a little grumpy after their nap.” He said pleasantly as the transport began to move.
“However, what interests me is that you think you’re not one of Balcov’s tools.” Brooklyn sat back in his seat and produced one of his few remaining knives, twirling it around in his fingers. “Balcov doesn’t keep you around because he likes you, you know. We’re both here only because he has a use for us.” Brooklyn stopped to point the knife at Johnny in the manner of a teacher emphasising a point. “You’d do well to remember that. When it comes down to it we’re equal in that we mean nothing.”
Brooklyn looked sideways at Johnny, a smirk reforming on his lips. Despite himself, he liked the redhead. There weren’t many people who weren’t afraid to confront him. It was refreshing.
Brooklyn resumed playing with his knife, content. Their failure to complete the mission still nagged at his consciousness but there wasn’t anything he could do about it at that present moment. He would just have to make sure he had a hand in completing the mission after Rei had stopped being the first priority. He needed to finish it. He was unused to leaving a job undone, no matter what the consolation prize.
~
Noah bit his lip and screwed up his eyes, refusing to let anymore tears flow. He was pathetic. He was with people to whom having knives embedded in their bodies was nothing new and here he was crying and creating more of a fuss.
“I’m fine.” He managed at Lilith. “I’m fine.” He reiterated to himself as another wave of flashing memories threatened to open up the floodgates again. He had been there. If only he had listened to Rei inside of trying his best to disable him. If only those knives had hit him instead of Kai. Then they wouldn’t be in a position where they had to tell Kai about Rei.
Kai looked over at Lillith and frowned. “I don’t remember us having girls before.” He muttered to himself as he studied her. “Did Taki get a girlfriend?” He wondered as he looked after their fearless leader. “Didn’t think he had it in him.”
