My mother doesn't actually care what I wear, as long as it looks good and I don't get made fun of at school. She likes my interesting sense of fashion and enjoys commenting on it in the morning before I head off to school.
My father thinks spending time on how you look is a waste of time, but he also thinks it's cool that I don't dress like other girls. Sometimes he takes pictures to send to the grandparents or use in our family calander when my outfits get particularly interesting.

Im a steampunk furry. My mom thinks being a furry is wierd and when I mentioned steampunk she looked a little disturbed.Im not what most call normal. I talked to a few of my friends and was called a freak because of the steampunk out fit I was working on at the time. My dad is about the same but he is weirder, he collects toys. With all that I have learned dont mention it to my family....but my grand mothers victorian-era art helps a-bit with a concept

Oh man, that was roflcopter-worthy. I can only imagine the looks on my family's faces when I tell them we're going steampunk for the wedding...xD Brilliant essay. I never understood how to use those phones...though they are really cool looking!

Sir Regulus Lyonhart Halo Fauna Captain Amaranth My mother threatened that she would be unwilling to trust me with money, were I to buy a bowler and/or top-hat. She still does not seem to understand that nuances of my subculture. As such I have neither, although one hopes I may yet receive one as a present. How vexing... I was going to get a bowler at one time, but decided against it. Now i have a nice brown newsboy cap. I have a newsboy cap too. But I'm dissatisfied with it. I think I got a poorly made one. I reaaaaaally want a top hat or something, but I look funny in hats...=/ Newsboy caps look really good...unless they're, like, polka dot or any of that other uber-trendy, tacky crap, haha.

That essay was brilliant. I'm fortunate that my mom and all of my grandparents support my love of Victorian goth and steampunk. XD I get lots of awesome stuff from them. Lots of things to make my costumes, awesome alternative clothing, corsets and pretty jewelry that's all goth and steamy. XD

It's always an adventure trying to explain to an older generation the trends they're not familiar with, no?
My parents just shrug it off as "strange".

I'm actually learning to sew. I told my mom the reason why I wanted to learn. (Because of wanting to make a steam punk costume.)
She laughed at me to my face. :]
But she's still helping me learn. ^^;; She approves of the creativity. :3

I don't think my parents have noticed I'm a steampunker yet. At least not through also being an otaki, bookworm, train nuff, gardener and more. I'm pretty sure they don't care as long as it's not illegale though. biggrin

Haha, I'm working lolita and steampunk into my wardrobe and my family doesn't even notice >: D. I made a brown vest and a lolita skirt. They all are happy because it's great that I can sew like my grandma. Since I like antique jewelry anyway, that's not strange. They're kind of whiny about people looking abnormal, so I'll just ignore them (which won't be hard for me) when I do dress full on steam. I'm 3 hours away so they won't be an issue anyway. Hmm, my sister/roomate may be a problem however stare .

My mum loves the idea of me being different. She's actually going to teach me to sew as well (I hope.)
She just worries that all of my activities are draining her wallet and my time.

It's cool to have an anthromorphic character, but to put on a fursuit and ACT like an animal is just...not cool. Most furries take it too far.

Agreed. I know someone who will only have... relations... if he and his partner are dressed as wolves............. and it's weird as hell. Once you cross that line you've become a freak. Kids.... good god... kids. I just don't understand most fetishes. Sure I love Nazi uniforms and being yelled at in german... but from what I understand that's a fairly normal fetish. Pretending that you're a woodland creature is a bit... well... yucky. But to each his own I guess.
In other news, My mom loves steampunk. We've been talking about making her an outfit. But for us it's not so strange. My dad wears a kilt and we live in a victorian house full of victorian era antiques.

Lovely essay. I'd give it applause with my mechano limbs but that may get noisy.
Anyway, my mom knows what Steampunk is and would likely be cool with em getting into it so long as it didn't get too expensive. Hell, if I try to fabricate anything I wouldn't put it past my dad to help and give advice.
And just FYI, I do the furry thing too though I don't own a suit. I do have a fursona someone is doing steampunky art of for me, though for me it's a bit spiritual.
I'll say no more here as I've gotten ridiculed for it sad
