"That's what I was thinking. Just wanted to make sure you're up to it." Glancing into the rear-view mirror, KB kept driving. He had to keep checking on occasion that Kobei was really there, that he hadn't gone insane. For some reason, he kept expected her to just vanish, or for them to hit something. It was just too tranquil to be driving, and chills ran up his spine. This wasn't a good place, none of it was. The trees and the ground cried in pain and spoke only of blood. It was a silly thought, but as he drove he couldn't shake the feeling that they were leaving the pan only to hop into the flame.

Covered in gasoline, would they hop.

Kobei managed to rummage through some of the junk, and find things that actually did seem familiar to her. As KB drove, she would take out parts of circuit board, and wiring. Now, if only she had a saudering iron...

Keeping the important things nearby, she would only sit, and wait. She had nothing really to talk about. Unless KB wanted an ear-full of what happened earlier.

KB's wounds hadn't closed up, but rather become so soaked in blood that the sticky mess clotted itself up. Small wounds that he had forgotten about, but in time might become infected. Of course, he seemed to not notice them at all as he drove. "Uhh.. So... What're you doing way out here?" He asked, unsure of where here was. All he really knew was that he loved the woman in the backseat of his car, and that he had to drive them somewhere safe. What was left to do after that, he'd have to find out. After all, it didn't seem that she was being very lovey dovey to him, so he had no idea what was going on.

*Location: That long and dusty road leading to the Black Company's current location.*

He approached the Black Company grounds wearily, his roan moving weakly along the dusty trail. Cold silver eyes narrowed, studying the place as he neared. It had been several months since he'd had contact with another human.

Ever since that final battle with the Dominator.

He'd been fighting for the Empire at the time, and so was loathe to join the Black Company. But he had no choice. Everywhere he went he was hated and jeered at; his experiences during that battle had changed him signifcantly. He was no longer that jolly youth that romped through the fields and forests, no longer the idealist who had enlisted in the Lady's army, no longer the loudest and the most boistrous of his squad. He had seen the Dominator rise, and the very sight of the monster had shattered his soul.

Now he was a lonely outcast, a wonderer traveling the continents in search of the Black Company. And now he had found them. He hoped they would accept him. It was his understanding that they where, after all, a band of mercenary misfits themselves, all having some past, some tragedy better left behind.

Finally he reached the main gate, dismounted, and lead his horse through. He stopped just inside, unsure of where to go next. Seeing no one in the immediate area, he moved off to the right, hoping to find someone who could point him in the right direction, and perhaps find stabbling for his horse.

"I was taking care of something that needed to be taken care of long ago. No worries."

She said this, sitting upright now in the back of the seat. She pulled her blanket around her to keep herself warm.

Vague.

Shrugging slightly, KB kept the car on the dirt road. There was something up with one of the tires, kept wanting to drag off to the side. There wasn't any added lumpiness to drive however, and so he figured they didn't have a flat...yet. His fingers once more thrummed along the steering wheel as he asked another question.

"And just how does that involve you being thrown into a tub of goo?" He'd asked, his tone only half-joking. With that kind of humor and such skill at speaking with traumatized women, it had to KB up front. Regardless of his flaws, KB hadn't thought for a moment that his kids might be in trouble. In fact, KB had yet to mention his kids at all, chances were because he had no god-damned idea where they were.

"To sum it all up, I gave up a part of myself to ensure another could be alive. Thing is, I shouldn't have done it..."

She trailed off. Her attention was occupied by a number of things. The fact her lover had to return in the most peculiar of ways, and that she was having this conversation with him.

Her leg still burned from the incident with the removal of a partial-thigh. It stung.

"Why did you do it then?" He asked, trying to keep his attention split evenly between Kobei and the road. Not that he expected to end up running into anything or anyone. At this point he was driving at a comfortable pace, since there was no huge rush to get towards death and decay. Glancing into the rear-view mirror, he sighed lightly. He had that feeling, the type a parent might have if they needed to pick up a child and had forgotten about them. There was just something somewhere he had to get about doing.

He and Kobei seemed so distant, as if he were speaking to a woman he simply knew and had saved. Though, it wasn't her fault. KB wasn't being exactly affectionate either. He was acting much more like a driver than a lover. Though oddly enough, crazy thoughts had invaded his mind. Draeken, it seemed familiar, though KB had no idea why he thought D and his wife would be at each other already by now.

In any case, he had no intent of trying to keep up with the Jone's, especially with Kobei missing a hunk of her thigh. The very thought of making a move on his injured love made him shiver in disgust of himself. To be such an insensitive b*****d, thinking of sex so soon as he'd just pulled her from such a horrible fate.

Men.

Kobei would turn her attention directly at him. "I want to be myself, no strings attached. I had to remove something that was keeping me from being myself. That's all. Unfortunately, it didn't go the way I had planned."

She sighed, and got fidgety with her hands. She always did that when she was nervous.

A better answer, and though it didn't explain things directly, it made much more sense to him. It also brought upon him a sudden epiphany that made him smirk. Her thigh wasn't letting her be herself! She ditched it! Of course, for once KB didn't speak his mind. Even if he had, such a joke would probably have gotten him only a cold stare and perhaps a weak slap.

And so he drove.

Some silence, for he hadn't much to say. Her reason seemed familiar to him, and he knew he'd done something similar. It wasn't that he'd forgotten everything about his life, but rather that it just didn't piece together right. It was just as if everything before the fall didn't really matter.

KB broke the silence in a way only his pathetic conversationalist grace would allow. "I love you." He repeated, though with more confidence than when he had first said so back in the lab. The words felt foreign to him, but he knew it was true, somehow. It swelled within his chest, and it made him feel sick. He blushed deeply, feeling his cheeks burn as he kept his sight averted from the mirror, away from her. Was this woman even his girlfriend, his wife? Why was he constantly thinking about kids? It was all very confusing, and uncomfortable.

Kobei's useless eyes would open to him, and try so hard to look in his direction. Fact is, she couldn't see anything, whatsoever.

"Uh...Hnn." Was all that was heard. An embarrased, yet truthful smile came to her face, and she blushed.

KB kind of hoped Kobei had passed out, though he was too scared to look. Raising his hand to his face, he rubbed his eyes, knocking his glasses off and onto the seat next to him.

He blinked then, looking forward at blurred images. He couldn't see s**t all in the distance.

His hand fumbled for the dark-rimmed pair of lenses that would assist him, and after a short yet frantic search he'd felt them. Raising them, he slipped them back into place. He wore them, but he wasn't used to needing them, odd.

This didn't help the fact that Kobei hadn't really said anything. This left his head swimming with wonderings of what was going on, or what had happened. He didn't really expect to hear his words echoed back to him, and yet for some reason he had expected something.

Kobei heard the clink of the glasses hitting another portion of the car. It seemed he had lost his glasses for a minute. Of course, she didn't know they were glasses, for she couldn't see. So ironic, for a minute, he was as impaired as she was.

"I have a horrible sense of time... How long have we been driving?"

She said this, and did not think. It was rude of her to not acknowledge his love for her. It's mostly because she didn't know what to say. It's so easy to just say 'I love you' back.

It was easy, because it was supposed to be. Or so KB thought, as he chastised himself within the confines of his mind. It was so easy and natural for him, that he severly doubted she felt the same way, for it wasn't for her. Though, a lot of that was probably due to the area and the way she had lived. The same could be said for KB.

"I don't know. I haven't been keeping track." He answered. He would've winced at his tone, for it had an edge to it. Well, he would have if he wasn't pissed off. He was mad, and his brain was feeding him more anger by the mouthful. He fed or it, refusing to let it go, simply rpeating the ideas in his head to keep himself angry. He liked being angry, made it so he didn't care whether she loved him or not.

Kobei would lean over, and feel around for the shoulder of the Driver's seat again. She would feel around for him, unitl she got a hold of some part of him, preferrebly the upper arm, and reply. "Thank you."

Kobei smiled gently, and stayed put for the remainder of the drive, until she got tired, and wanted to lay down.
