Pale ears flickered slowly. He could certainly imagine how being grounded amid a winged family could affect someone. He felt fortunate that he had inherited his sire's wings.
Tilting his head he nodded slightly, rather admiring her for her positive and relaxed thinking. For some reason he found himself thinking how well she and his mother and grandmother would probably get along. They were also positive thinkers and he suspected his mother with her adventurous spirit would delight in Marut.
"Swimming is one thing that I can not do, at least, not easily. Feathers clog badly when soaked and it takes such a long time to dry them out again. Though my Father seems to have a penance for getting wet." He added with a faint smirk, remembering his father's many lamentations about his watery adventures.
"I suppose that they do not wish to see us hurt, but young ones hardly think about safety when being rambunctious. At least in my experience." Shaking his head he banished his mane from his face where it had been slipping forwards before turning to look back at the mare, returning her grin with a smile.
"You pick where." He replied, tone lighter, a trace of playfulness finally showing itself. He really wasn't as old as he often acted..

'Yeah and my mother would rather not see me all messy, what're ya gonna do eh?' Marut chuckled, turning for a moment, walking backwards so that she was looking at Ehren whilst they talked.
'Tell me if there's a rock coming up would you?' she winked, and then turned laughing.
'Or maybe I'll just walk properly.'
She looked at his wings.
'So they aren't like a ducks then? That's a shame, I love swimming, and getting cool during the summer. It's even handy when you pull a leg muscle, gentle water exercise is good for that.'
She couldn't imagine not being able to swim..and she guessed that might be how he felt about her not being able to fly. It seemed that one really couldn't have it all.
'Umm,' she cast a glance around. They were near some open ground, and off in the distance she could see a single tree, a big one with no leaves on its branches.
'How bout from here to that big ole lone tree?'

He bobbed his head at her comment, a soft smile flickering over his expression a moment before she turned and started pacing backwards. Dark brows rose up to vanish under his forelock.
Chuckling at her antics he smiled, ears pricked. She really was an unusual mare, and he found he was truly enjoying himself. She made him want to laugh and tease, something he had lost the art of doing once he had grown from foalhood. Not for lack of a loving family, but it had been his own sense of responsibility that had crafted his taciturn manners.
Tilting his head as she asked a question he nodded. "That would be handy, but no, they are more like the eagle in build.. " he unfurled one and let it flair out, the tip was rounded with long tough flight feathers. Not the sharp, pointed shape of smaller birds like the swallows.
Folding it back he looked ahead to where the lone tree stood like a marker. Suddenly he grinned. "The tree it is.. ready?" Turning to her he flared out his wings, the shimmering white limbs held high, dark tips shivering in the light breeze.

'Well that's good too..' Marut winked.
'You don't make that eagley noise though do you? I might get worried if you did,' her expression was perfectly deadpan as she said that but then she let a smile slip out and giggled once again.
'Uhh yup..' she inched along, still slightly moving as they were speaking but skipped back by his side, her face still alight with humour.
'I would never try and get a headstart..' she looked over at the tree, all business suddenly, stretching each leg as she looked sidelong at Ehren.
'For fairness you can take off now, we'll start only when you're on the wing.'
She knew that it would take moments for him to get into the air, after all she only had to start running to begin the race. She took in deep breaths, working her lungs, and herself, jittery to begin now that the race was imminent. She would probably lose..but it would still be a thrill.

Ehren smiled back, giving a shake of his head that sent his mane tumbling forwards. Huffing it away from his muzzle automatically he looked at her through the dark green mass. "No, at least I don't think so.. " He replied, tone almost playful, lighter than had been at the beginning of their conversation.
Bobbing his head he tossed his hair back away from his face, watching her a moment. "Alright.. I'll take off and circle back round, since I'll end up in front of you otherwise. When I’m right behind, we start." Stepping to the side he flexed his wings, then pushed off with his powerful hind quarters. Three strides, and then he leapt high, forelegs tucked tight against his chest, massive wings beating powerfully and sending a strong backwind rushing over Marut.
Within moments the stallion was soaring high, wings slowing to a steady rhythm as he banked round, circling wide to come round behind Marut. Dipping slightly he zoomed along the ground, just above head-height. Dead ahead he saw her, then lifted his eyes to the target tree.
Then, he flashed over the spot they had stood moments before.

'Thanks again!' Marut called as the backdraft played merry with her mane once more. She peered up through a tangle of black hairs, shaking them away so that she could actually see when they started racing. Her heart was doing that already, giving an excited trip and she made herself calm, waiting to see his shadow fall on the ground next to her again..
'Ready..' she said, giving a swift glance to see that he was definately in position.
'Set..Gooo!' she called, thumping her hind hooves hard into the ground, pushing off from the starting position as her 'go' rang out loud.

Hey call was almost lost on the wind but sharp white ears caught the words expertly. There was more to flying than just keeping oneself airborne. As he raced up behind her, he heard her shout and saw the slim body bunch and take off like a rocket.
She had impressive speed on the ground, he noted as he drove his massive wings brutally through the air. It was no easy task, to fly level with the land and so low, there was no updrafts to help him and it was pure power that kept him from crashing to the ground as he shot after the lithe little mare. Muscles munched and strained, wreathing under glossy white coat as the stallion forced flashing feathers to work to their limits. Risking a glance down he spotted the fleeing form of Marut, the tip of her wind-whipped tail just under his forelegs.

Marut could feel the draught from above her as Ehren kept low to the ground. She'd not expected that, thinking he would take himself high up and just swoop along to the tree, that she could see had gnarled branches now that she was getting nearer.
Her hooves thudded on the ground, tail a black banner behind her as she worked her leg muscles to their limit, pushing herself forwards. She had to veer though, a cluster of rocks loomed out of the ground, and then she jumped, clearing a fallen tree trunk.
Doing so dropped her back a way, and she flicked a look upwards, trying to find more reserves so that she could sprint fowards and lose by not so much.

He saw her dip to one side as he flashed over both her and the rock. With a powerful stroke of his wings he shot forwards, staying at the same level, high enough that the downbeat of his wings wouldn't be too close to her or anything below, but not so high that he would gain an unfair advantage.
Unable to see her anymore he stretched out his head, ears pinned back against the whistling wind, and headed dead straight for the tree. Yet suddenly he banked to the side, his crazy speed bleeding away as he struggled to slow down enough to land without loosing too much time. His wings strained in protest at his brutal manouver, feathers rippling under the pressure as he zig-zagged. Risking a rough landing he folded his wings and dropped like a stone, hitting the ground and skidding along on his rump, forelimbs braced as he flaired out his wings, having no desire to plant himself face-first into the tree's trunk. If she was close behind, she would be able to slow down later than him, not having to swap from air to ground.

Marut knew she had lost this race the moment she saw Ehren dive to the ground, in a fairly ungainly fashion it was to be said. She'd managed to pull from her reserves and had caught up a great deal, despite this and the fact that he was making the last few yards along his bottom, she was still coming second.
She slowed slightly, not wanting to cramp up, knowing that she'd lost meant that she didn't have to push herself into doing something silly and injuring herself. This time at any rate..she was determined there would be a next time, and that she would be the victor then.
'Well done..' she coughed, as she got to the tree after Ehren did, her sides still heaving.
