I wonder if so many people see Wicca and then just stay there because it's the easiest to get information on..

callmebutterfingers I wonder if so many people see Wicca and then just stay there because it's the easiest to get information on.. Most people see wicca and stop because its advertized as "light and fluffy". Some don't like to go past that. I went past because I started out with a satantic type path ( long story), I went to wicca, and then I just kept going else where. Now i have reached kitchen witch/green witch/ and ... studying shamanism.

I've heard the term a few times and need to make sure I'm understanding it right...

I think kitchen witchery would be interesting but my knowledge of herbs and stuff is little and that's mainly because I just can't get that fascinated in it besides some very basic knowledge

Sage Delaney neko_usagichan i think wicca is just a big gateway to finding ur true path. In fairness, most of what is called Wiccan today - all this solitaire stuff - isn't really Wiccan. The term got co-oped and it gives the path a bad image. yea what i meant was everyone starts out w/ "wicca" whether it's really wicca or not...

I was thinking about the vocabulary bit again last night, and this conversation came to mind. I was wondering what seperated what's referred to as Wicca from the other types of Paganism that might be practiced or followed....

from how it's been explained to me by knowledgeable people who have done it all pretty much... "wicca" is just another collection of beliefs, just as "gardenarian" & all the other paths u can choose from. otherwise everything's open for consideration. to a point at least.

I'm not sure I completely understand what you mean... Do you mean that all of the paths are just grouped based on the specific beliefs of that group?

callmebutterfingers I'm not sure I completely understand what you mean... Do you mean that all of the paths are just grouped based on the specific beliefs of that group? not really... i'll try to break it down... ok let's say: religion A has 5 major beliefs. religion B has 7 major beliefs. religion C has 20 major beliefs. in comparison A & B might share 3 major beliefs. on the other hand A & C might share another 3 major beliefs from A. & B & C might share 4 major beliefs. & while all of that is going on all 3 religions will share at least 1 major belief between them all.

yea pretty much what i'm getting at is that all religions have similarities w/ at least 1 other religion. if you follow the roots, they're pretty much all the same thing & then it's the way they're embellished that make them unique.

GuardianIceQueen Sanguina-chan Wow, Guardian, an actual shaman? I don't think I've ever met one on Gaia before. A lot of shamanic practitioners but not a shaman. Still... the terms "shaman" and "witch" refer to roles one takes in one's community or in one's life. They don't describe religion. One can be a Christian witch, for example. Unsure about the shaman one... I mean, technically you'd have to be Siberian and a follower of that religion. I'd say the majority would be Pagans but some might describe themselves as spiritual atheists. I think many Pagans use the word as a shortened form of Neo-Pagan in most contexts, so they aren't using it to mean "any religion but the Abrahamic faiths". But that's evident by context. Additionally many people of Eastern faiths don't identify as Pagans. I suppose that's because the old implications of the word are more relevant to them than they are to those of us who insert an invisible apostrophe at the beginning of the word. They're not resurrecting a "pre-Christian" faith or basing their personal faith off said religion. I don't think I really consider myself a shaman yet. It is just an example really. I am studying and getting really into it. My great grandfather was full Cherokee. So I am really trying to get in touch with my heritage. You're lucky that you know where your native heritage came from, I know I have some on my mothers side, but I don't know much else about it. But I'm sure that helps with the Shaman studies.
