For nearly five weeks, Silvrendir remained with Mary and Rengeki, learning what he could from the two of them (though Mary remained tight-lipped about his quest and what he would have to do to Ascend). He found living with the two of them quite amusing - their constant banter often caused him to smile, much more often than he ever had back home.

His cold lasted nearly two weeks, but with Mary's care he was soon better and feeling as though he had never been sick. Also thanks to her, it hadn't been a bad cold, and he hadn't suffered much from it at all. From time to time he missed home, but it rarely lasted.

And though the storm went on (and on and on), at long last it ended, and one morning he emerged from the bedroom he had been using and headed down the stairs for breakfast, silent and thoughtful. He would have to be continuing on soon ...

((Sorry for the delay! I totally forgot where I was going with it for a while. ^^;; ))

Rengeki was downstairs when Silver came down. He was standing at the door, talking hushed like to someone outside. There was a soft murmer of their voices. The Manakete Prince looked up at the sound of Silver's feet and turned to his guest. He motioned for the figure to leave. There was a nod from the cloaked figure and then he was gone.

The prince came over to Silver, his face slightly grim. "We need to head out soon. Bloody time for a storm to end... the harpies will be out in full force again," he said solemly. Mary came from the kitchen with breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for her and Silver, and a slab of beef for Rengeki.

She was silent, as if in thought. She eyed Rengeki suspiciously, but he just waved it off. Mary nodded; she'd get informed later.

((No worries ^_^ I just wondered if I had forgotten to let you know it was your turn ^^; ))

As Silvrendir approached the kitchen he saw Rengeki shooing someone away. At the news about the storm he was encouraged - but the addition about the harpies worried him.

"Is there any way for me to be safe from the harpies?" he asked. "I know some magic ... but just the defense barrier ... and I don't know how long I could make that last ..."

Then Mary appeared with breakfast, and he waved good morning and smiled at her, as usual saving his voice and vocalizing the understood greeting. He caught the look that was exchanged between Mary and Rengeki, and his brow furrowed in a mix of curiosity and confusion.

"What's going on?" he asked softly, suspiciously. Was it something that concerned him or his quest?

Rengeki shook his head, "The magick will just bring them closer to you. They have an immense sense for magick, if they know what they're doing." The prince seemed to remember something from years past for a moment. He dodged Silver's question.

Mary just smiled. "Nothing that needs your concern," she said calmly, sitting at the table. "Now, eat up. You have a long ride ahead of you."

Silvrendir had the feeling that there was something that they weren't telling him, but he knew by now that if he pressed for answers, he would not get any, and might not even get any conversation. So he simply nodded and sat obediently at the table, picking up his fork and beginning to eat.

But he was far from feeling complacent. He knew that he would have to defend himself at some point, but if he couldn't use his magic, what could he use?

"Mary," he said softly, daring to look up at her, "you have been very helpful to me ... very gracious ... you have given me a place to stay, food to eat ... but ... I must ask one more thing of you ..."

He paused, his heart pounding nervously in his chest.

"I need some way to defend myself," he said softly. "I have nothing ... no weapons ... and little magic, and what little I have I am not allowed to use. I'm completely helpless out there, vulnerable to anything that I may run across ... I ... I don't want to seem ungrateful, but there must be ... something that I could use ..."

Mary smiled at him softly, and ruffled his hair. "All in good time, Silver, all in good time. I am merely a stop on your journey. It will take many moons for your to reach the Forest, and a few more to complete your quest."

She ate her eggs. "You want a weapon, I presume?"

Silvrendir blushed a bit but smiled at Mary as she ruffled his hair, the redness on his cheeks almost matching his fiery hair.

"If I may," he said softly, his green eyes wide as he looked at her. "I ... don't know how to use most, just a few, and not very well ... but I can practice as I go, and I will do what I can ... I promised Mother that I would return home in one piece ..."

And more for her sake than his own, he would fulfill that promise.

"Well... what do you know how to weild? In any case, I will give you a dagger, to be used if nessisary," she said, placing a slim dagger on the table. The handle was dark wood of some kind and the blade was sharp. It was completely free from any enchants, except for one that kept the blade from rusting or breating.

Silvrendir's blush deepened as he reached for the dagger, and he bowed his head respectfully towards Mary.

"Thank you very much," he said softly. "I will do my best to make myself worthy of it. The bow is the weapon that I know best ... but I thank you, very much."

He continued to eat, looking at the dagger, examining it, working out its workings in his mind even before the time came for him to use it.

Mary got up and rummaged throught a back room for a moment. She brought out a lovely wooden short bow and a quiver of arrows. "Here," she said, handing it to Silver, "a bow for you. Now, finish your breakfast. You have a long ride ahead and not a long time to waste."

Silvrendir's eyes grew wide when Mary came back with the short bow, and he took it gingerly, almost as if it were fragile.

"Thank you," he breathed, his face lighting up in a wide smile as he set it over the back of his chair. He set the quiver on the table next to his plate and then proceeded to do exactly as Mary had instructed: he finished his breakfast as quickly as he could without making himself sick, and then jumped to his feet.

"I'll go pack my bag and be right back!" he said cheerfully, feeling much better than he had earlier. And without waiting for a reply, he ran towards the stairs, dagger, bow and quiver in hand.

Mary chuckled and looked at Rengeki. "Go get the horses Reng," she said. The Prince gawked at her like she was crazy. "Yes. You are riding one, Prince. Pull your wings into you. You are far too conspicious as a dragon and as a human. Now go get them, ya olf!"

Rengeki glared at her, clearly not like this set up, but said nothing in reply. With a cring, his wings disappeared and he walked out to gather the horses. Mary bustled about the kitchen, getting food ready to be packed.

It was a short while before Silvrendir returned downstairs with his bag all packed, wearing his cloak over his wings, bow on his back, dagger and quiver at his side. He felt quite proud of himself - he had made sure to tidy his room before leaving, making the bed, making things neat, wiping off dust where it was obvious ...

But now he was ready to go, though he was sad to be leaving his new friend.

"I'm ready, Mary," he announced as he entered the kitchen. "Is there anything else I need before I go?"

Mary smiled and shook her head. "Nope. Rengeki should be here soon with the horses. They are blood stallions, the fastest you'll find on the plains of Patr. You will travel slower than riding on Reng, but it will be safer. He will lead you to the Forest," she said with another smile. She hugged Silver and ruffled his feathers a bit.

"They're here, Mary!" called Rengeki as he came in, a cloak hiding the holes where his wings would be. "Come, Silvrendir, we have a ride ahead of us."

Silvrendir hugged Mary back, smiling warmly. She had done so much for him ... how would he ever be able to repay her?

He swore then and there that he would do the best he could on his quest, and he would succeed at it, not only for himself, not only for his family, but also for Mary, to show her that he was as strong as she believed that he was.

"Thank you for everything," he murmured into her as he hugged her tightly. "Will I see you again?"
