Murasaki Shikibu Mistress DragonFlame Hmmm, it maybe my obsession taking over, but at the end of Slayers Next, Xellos, the trickster priest, says "Who knew mother had a compationit nature?" But, I distinctly call L-sama "Haha" (I watched the subtitled). And she is his mother, tecnically. Since she is GOD! Like, the ULTIMITE POWER!! She is the mother of the world, the universe, everything. So, wouldn't she have the most respect? And if Okaasan is more then Haha, then why? eek Haha is more respectful than Okaasan. You can make it even more respectful by saying Hahaue. The ue is written with the character for "up." So Xelloss was being a good little boy and was respectful when talking about his mother. But... other people are saying Okaasan is more respectful...? I think I confused myself. @-@ And it's Xellos, one s. That is how it's spelled on the sub. domokun

And I'm pretty sure that Haha is the more respectful way to refer to your own mother at least. That's the way I've always learned before But I get confused by this, too. Every lesson I've seen has had Okaa-san as the way to refer to someone else's mother, yet I've seen some people's mothers refered to as Haha. I guess it's hard to understand the contextual rules without actually being in the environment.

if you want to practic your speaking and listening skills
a good program to get is the Pemslur Laguage cd set.
it's really good.
theres 10 cds andit goes from super duper basic to advanced
it's really good.
It's repetitive, so you really get the lessons
set in your mind. and i really focuses on
Pronuciation so you sound Japanses. ^^
My teacher had us do some in Class and
it was Great so i went out a got them.
You can get them at Barnes & Nobal
tho they like $50 ^^;
But they'er worth it.

Ooh, thanks Tsuki Chan! My boyfriend is looking for ways to learn. biggrin
As for the haha/okaasan thing, I have always heard that when talking to your mom: okaasan. About your mom: haha. About someone else's mom: okaasan.
Although, I have seen (in anime, and yes I know anime does not accurately reflect Japan) mom called mama and dad called papa. Both were written in katakana, though, so they wre obviously adopted from english, and were probably just cutesy anime slang. smile

I'd only heard it in Sailor Moon, so you can probably see why I thought it might be just an anime thing. smile I thought it was great when my teacher was having us try to figure out katakana words, and I'm going, "What in the heck is pan??" "Oh, " she says, "That's bread. It's portugese." And I was supposed to know this HOW?? eek

Some loanwords are funny, most of them come from english but then you get the ones that are from other languages and it's like "what?" Plus, since it's a loanword, it's foreign, and since it's foreign, I hear of Japanese people expect you to know it.
Pan is also French for bread
The word for a part time job, "arubaito" is from German. The word for "work" in German is "arbeit"
One of the weirdest loan words is the word for stapler, which is "hochikisu." This comes from the name "Hotchkiss" the last name of the man that invented the gas orperated machine gun. So, don't ask for a "suteipuraa" no one will know what it is.

So, they decided that naming the stapler after the guy who invented the gas operated machine gun instead of, well, the STAPLER, was llogical how???
Sometimes, I wonder. But then again, that is part of what makes Japanese so much fun. It's absolutely crazy sometimes.
Whats funny is, if it's in katakana, I kind of expect to know it! Well, I did, but now I know better. sweatdrop
Ooh, hey! I just thought of a great idea! Why don't we put up a mini japanese-english dictionary on the guild? It can have numbers and the days of the week, and intro words and all that stuff! ooh, ooh, can I set it up?

xd I love katakana words. I got a worksheet on them in class one time. My favorite from it was o-maiga(little tsu), which translated to "Oh my God."

It had to find stuff like that for free, there's any number of Japanese lesson CDs out there that your have to pay for, though.

My problem is learning sentence structure... I've learned a lot of other stuff and I can understand setences, I just can't make them all that well.
I think a lot of it just stems from the fact I need an actual class setting to pull some of this stuff together.
