“Foxes! Foxes are hunting on the Ground! We gotta do something, mommy!”

Amberglow released the two mus and whirled at the call, her eyes wide and horrified. She hadn't at first noticed the tone of pride; only her baby's voice and the word foxes. Upon seeing Ashton, though, still with obvious traces of gunk in his feathers and a smug look on his face, her expression changed instantly to anger. It wasn't like him to outright lie, even to cover his own tail when he was in trouble. She was going to have his--

"Excuse me."

Amber tore her eyes away from her son to glare at the owner of this unknown voice--an intruder in their territory. Her furrowed brow relaxed a bit when she saw that it was a large female whose posture was obviously non-offensive. A very large female, with bright green eyes and beads dangling from her wings.

"What Ashton says is true," the newcomer continued. "Only a short distance from here there are a pair of foxes hunting together."

Amber tensed again as the other female described the foxes' way of hunting and what would have to be done about them. This was no lie concocted by a naughty fledgling. There was real danger, and it was very close. She nodded to the stranger and then shot a glare at her young son. "We'll talk about this," she said, brushing his stained chest with her wingtip, "later. Right now, I need you to understand that this is not fun and games. And no, you can't help the grownups scare the foxes away, so don't even ask."

She turned to the other adult, bracing herself against any complaints Ashton might give at being left out of the action. "I hope he hasn't caused any trouble," she said. She glanced toward her stinking home tree and added, "For you, that is."

Thank Noctus, Rune instantly confirmed his claim. Amber’s angered expression turned into worried surprise under his eyes, so he kept his smug face and nodded as the Mystic explained the situation. He even dared to comment: “Yep, mom, they caught a hare, I saw it, that was awesome!”

He let himself be touched by his mother and started preening himself afterwards.
Ashton however heard clearly the apothecary’s last sentence. He interrupted his cleaning in disappointment and replied weakly: “But mom! I helped finding ‘em…”

Pouting, the young wildtype considered it was an injustice, but his mom had the last word every time, so why bother? He turned his back to the adults, unhappy, and resumed his preening almost silently. Almost. He muttered under his breath as he got rid of the sticky, smelly substance.
“Well, huh, when I’m a grown-up, I’m gonna scare all the foxes away and not bother with ground berries and everyone will thank me and…” he mumbled, as well as other childish nonsense, waiting for his punishment.

"Only a slight change of schedule for myself," Runewing commented, nodding slowly as she recalled the indecent. "It was my companion who found Ashton cleaning his feathers not too far from here. We were in search of berries when we found the two foxes. I only returned to make certain the news reached you, seeing as I have to be on my way shortly." She lifted a wing, rearranging the beads on her wing, positioning them so that they would not make further noise as she flew. "If you could warn the other Sentinels in the area to be on alert, I'm sure we will have this trouble resolved shortly." She paused as the smell from Amberglow's ruined stores blew past her on the breeze.

"We may be meeting again sometime in the future," She continued, flicking a wing in Ashton's direction. "Your son will be requiring some guidance with his Will soon, after what I noticed today. Perhaps we can continue this conversation then. I would very much like to know how this situation turns out."

“Yes, yes, I will certainly spread the word,” the young mother agreed.

She glanced at Ashton as the other female continued on about the fledgling’s Will. His muttering was quiet, but not beyond her hearing. She smiled to herself, hoping he would hear the turn the grownups’ conversation had taken.

“His Will, you say?” Amber drew her eartufts back in deference to the larger bird, feeling a bit of the old fledgling excitement herself. “You wouldn’t happen to be a Mystic, would you?” she asked.

Ashton only bothered listening when mention of his Will was made. Out of spite, he then concentrated on a nearby leaf. His mumbling became faint gibberish. All his frustration was focused on this tiny thing.
Was it the soothing familiarity of his home that changed the outcome? Very concentrated to the point it almost hurt, completely focused on a bright green leaf, his target suddenly detached itself from a branch almost as young as it was. It floated a couple seconds, shaking only slightly, and then the boy let it go. It slowly fell down to the forest floor which seemed to be so far away now.
He was satisfied. With training, he could manage to do that whenever he wanted.
He had no idea if the adults had seen what he had done; he was so concentrated he didn’t hear them, and didn’t bother looking at them.
Something was however more important to Ash: flying. He really wanted to be faster… but now wasn’t the moment to exercise his wings and go away.
So, instead, he kept pouting.

Runewing's eyes glinted in the moonlight at Amber's question. Many Sentinels knew of her rare presence in the forest, her secretive profession being the source of many rumors. She was aware of what strange things were attributed to her, however Rune did not find it necessary to ever correct these falsehoods. It was not her duty to clear up the stories surrounding the Mystics, and every once in a while, one of these whispers would reach her. Occasionally she was baffled at some fabrications, wondering what could have possibly been their source, while others she merely blinked at.

"Yes, Ashton's Will is progressing as you may have noticed," She flicked her eyes towards the fledgling as he focused on the small leaf. "It will need training if he wishes to progress. It is my task to teach."

Amberglow had heard many of those rumors of the Mystics’ powers. She never assumed for a moment that her son could be so talented with his Will that he’d be taken away to learn their secrets, but all the same, she was tickled. Of course, the Mystic could have been a regular old teacher and she still would have been tickled. She was just that kind of girl.

She saw how Ashton was pouting, and felt a bit guilty. He made a big mess, but it was an accident. He’d help her clean everything up; that’d be punishment enough. For now, she wanted him to cheer up at least a little. She turned a small smile on the Mystic, keeping an eye on her boy as she said, “Oh, I would love for you to teach him – that is, if he wants to learn.”

Ashton raised an eyebrow as he heard the adults. He started putting the pieces together and got it. Wait, wait; did they want him to learn more about his Will?! The day had been hectic enough without having to change the subject completely. Confused, he slowly turned his head in their direction. Worriedly, he asked: “What do you mean, teaching me?”
He had been so eager to be big, fast and strong. He was ready to pay more attention to flying and hunting classes, and improve his unbalanced capacities.
But he never thought a single second he was so good with his Will that he needed extra training. He had never noticed it before! Besides, was exploding berries (when you intended to pick them up gently!) so good?
And when you’re talented with your Will, do you have to become a Mystic when you grow up? He preferred doing something more adventurous with his life.

However… Amberglow was a cool mommy, and the best he’s ever had. The son didn’t want to disappoint her. His wish was to make his mother proud. His face showed concern, as he began thinking very hard about his choice.

Runewing knew that Ashton did not have what it took to be a Mystic. His interests resided on more adventurous paths that her own, but the old Mystic knew it was not only those with her task that could benefit from training their Wills. Through practice, Wills could be used successfully and to great advantage in any task.

She considered her words carefully, "Your son does have potential with his Will, the same as any of us do, but only those who pursue to better their mastery over it can use it to its true effectiveness. Even those not born with the capacity to become Mystics could stand to develop their Wills further. Like Ashton, it's for those who are interested that I mentor here in the forest."
