Riley skipped happily through a field of plushies. There were plushies of all kinds, bears, rabbits, frogs, everything! The best ones though, in Riley’s opinion, were the giant cat plushies, much like his own blue cat plushie. “I’m skipping through a field of plushies! The greatest plushies in the world! Big ones, small ones, bear ones, cat ones, all kinds of ones!” He sang as he skipped.
The demonunicorncat wasn’t paying attention to where he was skipping and ran right into another anthro. “Oh! I’m so sorry!” Are you okay?” Riley asked the other.
“Oh no! I failed! You were not supposed to see me.”
“How come?” Riley asked him.
“I am a guardian, an observer, protector of sweet dreams and I am not supposed to be seen by my dreamers. It is the rule.”
“Oh.” Riley looked over the other anthro. He had beautiful, long, blonde hair, and blue eyes. He was a unicorn wearing a pink and white dress with a white apron over it. He also had a black, bunny plushie! “You have your own plushie, too?!” He exclaimed. “What’s his name? Or is it her? What’s your name, by the way? I have a plushie too! Her name is Catalina and she’s a cat plushie!”
The unicorn laughed softly at Riley. “His name is Dreamcatcher. I cannot tell you my name, since it has been lost among the dreams for years.”
“Dreamcatcher? That’s a cool name! Why did you name him Dreamcatcher?”
“I protect the sweet dreams from nightmares. When a sweet dream starts to be attacked by a nightmare, I stop it, or well, Dreamcatcher stops it. He blocks the nightmares from taking over. He also helps to keep the boundaries between nightmares and sweet dreams where they should be. Dreamcatcher used to be pure white.”
“Really? That’s so cool! Catalina makes me feel safe; maybe she is my Dreamcatcher?”
The unicorn shrugged. “She might be.” The plushie filled world started shaking and the ground started to split in half.
“What’s happening?!” Riley asked, starting to get scared.
“A nightmare is attacking!” The unicorn explained.
Suddenly, Dreamcatcher began to glow and change into a dream catcher, net feathers, beads, and all. He grew bigger, and bigger as the nightmare got closer. He grew large enough to form a barrier between the dark, stormy clouds of the nightmare, and the plushie filled dream. Dreamcatcher stood his ground as the nightmare crashed into him over and over again, stronger each time. The more the nightmare attacked, the brighter Dreamcatcher glowed, until he engulfed the nightmare, swallowing it whole. Slowly, he changed back into his bunny plushie form, now a darker shade of black than he was before.
The world became sunny and whole again. “Wow…so that’s why he’s not white anymore…” Riley stared in awe of Dreamcatcher and the unicorn. “He really does catch nightmares.”
“He does. I believe it is time for you to wake up and join your world again; time for you to forget about me.” The unicorn, Dreamcatcher, and the plushie world started fading as Riley started waking up.
He awoke, saying out loud, “But I still have so many questions!” He sighed, then grinned. “That was so AWESOME!” He hugged his pillow, grinning even more. That was the best dream experience ever.
