That looks rather spiffy!

How does it stack up to your concept? Also, which animal would you be most interested in? We can change it to add other animals.

I'm kinda loathe to give too much away at the get go, but my concept is a changeling character (cat or dog seems apt unless you think there is something more awesome), on the smallish side (5'5ish? slim build).

Impish, cheerful, persevering personality, though a bit of an odd fish.

Probably going to put best stats in dex, charisma, intelligence perhaps. Looking for skills like jumping, climbing, tumbling, balance. Maybe rogue, or a speed based fighter class like you suggested (though what else is available?).

There's swashbuckler, but it's a little weak. Swashbuckler/fighter multiclass prestiged into duelist is good, but you'll be a bit weak to start off with.

Anyway, you kind of need to tell me things. I'm the DM you see. I need your full character sheet and a character history at the least.

Haha, I wasn't going to hide that from you when the time came! I just didn't think we'd be getting down to gaming that fast.

Probably right. Oh well, if you want my help on realizing a character concept, just ask. Also, remember that I'll probably be too lazy to change things otherwise.

Explaineth the big things about the 3.5 system for me? And yes, I'd like help with the concept, very much so, since I don't even know the special classes anymore.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 26, 2008 8:37 pm

Ok, well you have the standard classes: barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, wizard. There are plenty of other classes, but they are in other source books and must be approved by me.
A big difference between 2.0 and 3.5 is that any race can be any class.
These classes can be taken level 1-20. Or you can multiclass. Multiclassing is different as well. Each level you simply choose which class to level in. There is usually a limit of two classes, but some DMs are more lenient about that. Also, there is an exp penalty if you don't keep your classes within one level of each other. This is where favored class becomes important. Whichever class is your race's favored you can take for free. This allows you to take an extra class or level your classes unequally without incurring exp penalties.

On top of that there are prestige classes. They have requirements. Usually a few feats or some ranks in some skill or a certain BAB. You can also multiclass in prestige classes and usually only two as well.

The whole point of all these classes is to create a character with the features you want.

Different classes get different features of course. Like the rogue gets evasion AND improved evasion. Few other classes get evasion, which is the strong point of the rogue. Or the Cleric gets divine spells. Other classes get divine spells, but none have as many or as versatile divine spells. Then there's the paladin, which is more of a warrior than the cleric thanks to the improve BAB, but it has less spells. It's almost like a cross class cleric/fighter, but it gets a few extra class features.

So then there's BAB, which stands for base attack bonus. Your class gives you BAB. Fighters get full progression, which means at level 20, they'll have 20 BAB. Wizards get the lowest progression, which is half. So they'll have 10 BAB at level 20. Clerics and rogues and the like fall in between.
Now when you get to 6 BAB, you get a second attack at 1. The same holds true at 11 and 16. So a class with a full BAB progression will have 20/15/10/5 at level 20.

Saving throws have been simplified now you have fortitude, reflex, and will. They are useful in different situation. Fort is generally used to resist poisons. Reflex helps you dodge things like fireballs, lightning and traps. Will helps you resist spells like charm person. Will is useful.

Next we have feats. Feats are either passive things, such as a bonus to will saves or a shield proficiency. They can also be abilities that you can use in battle or otherwise, like spring attack or cleave.
You get a feat at first levels and then every three levels after. As well, some races and classes give you extra feats. Feats are the big draw to being human or a fighter.

Then there are skills. These allow you to do different actions depending on how many ranks you have. For instance, if you have ten ranks in tumble, you can fall ten extra feet without taking damage. It's about how you roll when you land. Ranks in tumble also allow you to tumble through battle to avoid attacks of opportunity. There are also knowledge skills, which, not surprisingly, allow you to access knowledge you might have learned at one point or another.
You get skills every level according to your class. Like a rogue gets 6 plus int score, but a fighter only gets 2 plus int score. Your class also determines which skills you can use. Rogues are one of the few classes that can use slight of hand.

Lastly, you get to put an extra point into an ability every 4 levels.

Now is there anything I've forgotten to talk about?

I dont think so, but Im not sure I understand BAB progression...
PostPosted: Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:45 pm

Ok, well, first level the only characters that start off with +1 in BAB are the ones that have full BAB progression, which are fighter, rangers, paladins, anf barbs. Everyone else starts off with 0 BAB. 3/4 progression like clerics, rogues, and monks get +1 at second level. Wizards have half progression. I dunno if I'm helping at all...

srd
Base Attack Bonus: Add the base attack bonuses acquired for each class to get the character’s base attack bonus. A resulting value of +6 or higher provides the character with multiple attacks.

That is all the rulebook says on it.

Can I leave those kind of things to you D:
I mean if you tell me what kind of bonuses I should have each level, I can write those into a character sheet, but otherwise, I wouldn't know what I'm supposed to have at what time...
PostPosted: Thu Jun 26, 2008 10:30 pm

If you look at the class it will have you BAB progression per level.

Man I got completely lost in that discussion. Baran, you will have to explain things to me in words of one syllable in the game ;.;

NO I DO NOT WANT TO BE A MURLOC. Speaking of which, did you see the Murloc RPG on the site with the emo kid generator?

I was picturing the sa...whatever I give up on spelling that as shark-people. But oh well. Anyway, I think any of those could be a cross with anything else. LIKE maybe the dragon bred with the triton. Also everything was a ~love match~ despite whatever the manual implies. I just want to be a shark-dragon-merman-with-legs. I am okay with having only a limited time out of water if it won't mess up your campaign.
