I don't think marching band should be called a sport, tbh. Marching band is definitely similar to a sport in many ways, and can be just as if not more challenging and rewarding, but I think the fact that we're making music makes it something different (and better, haha) than a sport.

And I don't think band can even be compared to football. Our band is pretty challenging physically but we don't have many athletic people in band.
You definitely have to be a lot more athletic, faster, etc. to play football. Then again, I'm not a football player, so what do I know. xD

Besides, the amount of work you put into it doesn't determine whether it's a sport or not. Maybe, I don't know, construction or whatever is as physically demanding as football. Does that mean construction is a sport?

I hate it when people say that marching band isn't a sport and that its too easy top be considered a sport. If they think that its too easy than I would love to see them busting they a** out thier like us.

We get letters in band just like they do in sports so it should be considered a sport. Expecially since we have to stay after or come ib when their is no school for band.

It has been my dearest wish for awhile to put a tuba on my P.E. teacher and make him march with us during practice. Oh, if only....

ok i didnt notice till now on my last post i said the football team works 6 am -9 or 10pm over summer...

haha idk where i got that from, but the rest of it is true....

get this, even more proof that the skool doesnt care about us:

1. we are way in debt already to the skool, THEY want us to do a field show for THEIR football games, but they wont pay for something as measley as frikin spray paint to paint lines on our practice field???? WTF????

2. we STILL have no Band Boosters...i dont think we're gettin' 'em...

i love Hoover's administration.... rolleyes mad

if i didnt have so many friends at Hoover, i would switch skools just becuz of band faster than you could blink....

=========================
Surprisingly, most of the football team and coaches understand that Marching Band is srs business at my school, except for one coach and a few players. We have two marching band members who play football as well. They don't ever say one sport is any harder than the other. They normally just tend not to want to choose.

But I have gotten into two arguments this year with some people who claimed marching band was easy.... and "gay".

Me: Then tell me. Just how is Marching Band gay?
Him: Nascar drivers work harder than you do! Marching band is just a bunch of faggots walking in a circle!

Now, I mostly ignored the nascar comment. I don't have enough knowledge on that to argue about it.

Me: How are we faggots? (I also ignored the circle comment.)
Him: Because you're in Marching Band!
Me: How is Marching Band gay?
Him: Because you're a bunch of faggots walking in a circle!

Never ending loop of stupidity.

Example Numero Dos:
Him: Are you going to the home coming tomorrow night?
Me: Yeah. I have to.
Him: Why?
Me: I'm in marching band.
Him: Band nerd!

Now, some people take band nerd as a compliment. I wouldn't mind being called that, however, I know they mean it in an insulting way. So I take offense by it.

Me: You really shouldn't insult us until you're able to do it.
Him: Band is for weenies!
Me: You wouldn't be able to handle it.
Him: It's for wimps!
Me: Wimps don't come to school 3 weeks early to practice for 8 hours straight. Wimps don't give up most of their time after school for physical exercise for three hours. Wimps can't do run laps. Wimps can't move and play instruments for 10 minutes straight. Wimps don't get up at 5:00 AM every day, or 3:00 AM for certain days with contests.

Now, I could tell he knew he had lost. This was all he could do....

Him: Look, a monkey! (he points behind me laughing. I just stare at him ashamed.)

There is a thing I've noticed. Every single person who says band is gay/easy/stupid/for wimps/for geeks has a few qualities.

1: They do incredibly poorly in school, ranging from F's to D's.
2: They are incredibly fat, overweight, and/or wimpy. There are quite a few students who have passed out in band, and these overweight people who can't run across the cafeteria without getting winded, who eat three slices of pizza a day, think they can just insult something like they actually know what it is. They act like they could do it! Refer back to the running part, the overweight part, and the pizza part, please. The football players who insult us are normally the weak ones who just sit on the bench the whole game.

There is that occasional football player or other sport player who will actually praise the band for how hard they're working. Which always shocks me. While most of the athletes don't insult us, most of them don't think anything more of us.

Well, anyway, I ranted long enough. It just makes me.... angry. People who cannot do anything at all think they're so tough by falling a trend.

Maybe I'm taking it a bit too seriously.

This phrase pisses me off soooo much, "The only reason why people get in band, is because it's an easy P.E. credit, and you like don't do anything."

You get credit for it????? For us to get PE credit, we have to take it all 4 years for it to count as, like, 1 credit. And we have to write an essay why it should count- needless to say, most people just don't even try to win and do PE sometime 2nd semester. However, though we don't get credit, we still have to have certain grades to stay in the M.B. It's like we get the restraints of sports with none of the benefits. Ugg.

That was a pretty cool study, the video in the beginning.

It sho' ain't easy, but it sho' ain't a sport neither.
I mean, if it's a sport there has to be a winner, right? Or at least a score. And don't gimme that "But everyone is a winner!" crap.
No. Everyone is NOT a winner. In fact, when you have to march every freakin day in the wildly unpredictable and freezing weather, NO ONE is a winner. NO ONE.

OMG........I go nuts when people bring it up. It is a sport. It is harder than other sports like basketball and baseball. I have to carry a 40 lb drum for more than 5 hours for a normal pratice. We have to memorize music. Everyone has to be in step while marching diagonally, backwards, sideways, and forwards with judges breathing down your neck. It is a sport because its a competition, we get scores. We have uniforms. If anyone wants to argue with me, come give it a try. I feel to strong on this subject.

there are winners
it just depends on whether your band is competitive or not

If marching band was easier, we'd call it football...

I know people who are in track and basketball. They all admit the band practices more than any of the other athletic groups. And we're still under appriciated. stressed The football team does the same thing during every quarter:
Run,Block, grab the ball, and run over and over.
The band does:
Left,right,left,right, constantly.
Play until your lungs explode,
Morph into circles, move the circles across the field without them changing to squares or ovals.
Cover down in diagonals. Cover down on straight lines.
Watch the drum major.
Moving your fingers and your feet at the same time.
Squaring shoulders correctly.

I could go on forever. People in marching band can add on to the list.

alright im just gonna end this argument here. Im in marching band and football and football is a million times harder. In football we have to go out in the same heat over the summer, practice for just as long, carry 25 lbs of equiptment and bust our asses off. like i said im in both and marching is easy. its not running at full sprint all the time, we're just walking around. yes it gets tiring but go try sprinting for 10 seconds then standing still for 10 then sprinting for 10 and do that for 3 hrs (avg length of game). i wanna see all u who say marching band is harder get on a football field where 300 pound fatass lineman are in your way every goddamn play. marching is not a sport, its a leisure activity. at all the parades u complain about there are 90 yr old WWII vets or something marching behind the band.

It's a very big myth that all college bands are laid back and silly... mine's definately not the case. I mean, we're not uptight about how we run the show, so it can appear to be sloppy, but we perform exhibition for a lot of BOAs and, thus, have high-speed, high-energy shows.

... other college bands might, but most of them suck. Unfortunately, there's no college band competition circuit to find out.
