The sand felt cool and soft against her paws.
It wasn't enough to calm the burning anger in her heart.
The wind rippled gently past her, ruffling her mane and fur and sending a cold chill down her spine.
It wasn't enough to douse the fire in her eyes.
Ink stood in the wake of the sun along a spindly beach. She was just out of reach of the rolling waves, taunting the receding tide as it moved back from land. Her eyes were fixed on a building in the distance, fur on end all the way down her back.
He was here.
She could smell it, practically, the energy from the Inbetween that seemed to ooze out of any demon that had been in this place for a little too long. Perhaps it was just her imagination? She started an ambling walk down the beach, eyes shifting from the house to the path before her every now and then. As she came across a fiddler crab she hissed, starling the creature to scuttle back behind a rock.
She wasn't in the mood to play. Her claws left deep scores in the soft sand behind her as she moved, but sooner or later the water would wash over them and it would be like she was never here.
And soon she would wipe his existence from this place.

It was a staring contest.
No matter how hard he tried, Juliek just could not take his eyes away from hers. Fur on end and a growl in his throat, he circled the other uneasily in the heavy, wet sand of the beach, locked in a death match but each unwilling to jump. Juliek flipped his mane from his eyes, watching the wary and angered look in the female’s face.
“He sent you to deal with me, didn’t he?” Ink hissed, tail swatting back and forth. Her ears flattened against her skull. “He thought he could send you to do his dirty work?”
“No,” he growled in response, finally stopping his movement but remaining crouched against the ground, “No one sent me, I did not come to harm you.”
“Liar. You live with him.”
“I live v’ith many,” Juliek snapped, “Do not assume e’feryone is out to kill you.” His eyes narrowed at her as she leapt for him without warning. He barely had time to flatten himself to the ground to avoid her. Sand flew every which way through the air, pelting boulders and the area around them as paws flew over the ground. Growls and hisses came as Juliek collided with her side, sending both to the ground in a flurry of claws and fur. Wrestling there a moment, he finally won out with his larger body and pinned Ink there, both panting for breath and soaked to the bone.
“I v’anted to help you,” he growled, waiting until she stopped her struggling to let her go and back away, “V’e could v’ork v’ell together, you and I.”
Ink spat on the ground, ruffling her long fur and turning her eyes out to the rolling waters. “What makes you think that?”
“Your eyes,” he replied after a moment, swatting dirt away from his rump with his tail, “I see the same thing v’hen I look in a mirror. You hate, but you lust for something you just do not know.” Striding past her, he craned his head to look at her as he began to leave. “Remember that. You v’ill be able to find me in the future if you v’ish.”
Ink narrowed her eyes but said nothing, moving only enough to watch the male retreat into the distance.
A valuable asset indeed...

Blitzkrieg shuffled quietly behind his mother, tail tucked the best he could between his legs. He liked the beach certainly enough, it was warm and inviting, but the way now that the wind bit at his face and made him squeeze his eyes shut was -not- what he wanted. Something was wrong- very, very wrong. Now as he stood on the windy shore, tucked under Ink's belly to use her long fur to shield himself, he shuddered and then watched with growing anxiety as a large, dark male seemed to be headed their way.
Who was that?
The older male's gait meandered back and forth unsteadily, as if he weren't quite sure where he was going. After catching sight of Ink, however, he steadied his stride and headed straight for them. Blitzkrieg's uneasiness heightened, cowering beneath his mother has he struggled to figure out who exactly he was looking at.
Then it hit him.
The long, windswept hair, the dark dappled pelt... the eyes that were exactly his own. He froze. "Mommy," he whispered, "Is that-"
"Hush," she growled. He cowed and quieted, watching as the male stopped to eye him. His heart sank. Instead of the warm, welcoming expression he had been hoping to see, nothing but cold, dark hatred was there. How was it that every look he ever got was like that? Unless mother was in a good mood and she doted on him, all he usually got were hisses and growls...
"That the scrub?" he muttered, "I ha'f to take that little thing v'ith me?" His accent startled Blitzkrieg, who had not been expecting it, and a soft intake of breath was barely heard over the waves washing up on shore. Ink forced him out from beneath her and into plain sight, nosing his rear so he had to step towards the now very imposing and very scary male.
"His name is Blitzkrieg." she stated simply, "He's your son." If the male's face could have paled it would have. He growled, as if not believing her, then looked hard at the young demon again. It seemed he, too, noticed the similarities, and turned his face to the sea with a sharp huff.
"He is not yet bound," he replied simply, not meeting Ink's gaze. "V'hat do you v'ant me to do about it?" She narrowed her eyes at him and nodded, attention shifting to the tall house that seemed so far off in the distance.
"Take him to her," she replied, "I'm sure someone in that house can take care of the kid."
Then she turned and left.
Helpless, Blitzkrieg let out a mournful wail, tail still tucked between his legs as his mother strode away from him like they had never met. He felt tears welling up in his eyes, wondering if this was how all families acted. The male shushed him, more gently then he had expected.
"Do... do not cry." he said, "Someday you v'ill see her again. V'hen you do, you v'ill understand." The child sniffled softly, looking up into the auburn eyes that mirrored his own. They hurt with an intense pain of longing for something he didn't know etched in them.
"Zu Haus," he muttered, turning and heading back the way he had come, "Let us get you bound to her, little one."

What a beautiful day. Sprawled out on the fourth floor deck, Beau could have been content to stay there all day long. Beside her, Captain lay on his stomach, one paw folded over another and his head resting comfortably atop them. There was no wind, no cold chill over the house today. It was simply…
Wonderful.
Behind them, Lieutenant lay on her side, dozing in the sun. Belle and Cavalier were splayed back to back, fast asleep for their mid-afternoon nap. All was at peace, all was comfortable. The slider door was open just a foot or two to give them passage back through Capricorn’s bedroom into the house should they want to. Within, their bonded sat in her library, pouring over old tomes and journals, her daily study time. The familiar, comfortable scent of old books wafted out the window of her room.
It was a beautiful day.
Somewhere in the house thundering paws could be heard up and down the stairs, but they didn’t bother the sleeping family. It was all the usual here in this house. With a contented sigh Beau sat up, mimicking her mate’s position but keeping her head in the air to survey the beachscape again, like she had done every day for the past two years. She breathed deep the thick scent of salt and sand, eyes closed as she relaxed. This was her home.
Captain stirred alongside her, finally comfortable enough to shift to his side. Head hitting the deck floor sleepily, with a soft murmur of something he was soon just as asleep as his children around them. Somewhere in the house, a book snapped shut and a chair was pushed back from a desk.
Capricorn leaned into the door frame, sticking her head out the space she had left for her family. Belle nearly leapt up as she sensed her, startling Cavalier as she did so.
“I’m making dinner,” she said softly, careful not to disturb the rest of them, “It’ll be ready in an hour.” Beau nodded to her and watched as her bonded retreated back to make the trek to the first floor, Belle hot on her heels and eager to help in any way she could.
This… was her family.

She was here.
Blitzkrieg’s jaw clenched hard as the wind that had once bit and harassed him brushed past like a hand and pushed his bangs from his eyes. His claws dug into the soft sand of the bank he stood on, not noticing as the breeze brushed the dune grass against his body. He could see himself ages ago, cowering on the beach as he felt the cold, harsh reality that no one loved him. No one.
At least his father had the decency to find him someone that cared. Juliek had made it clear that he hated children, but now that he was an adult and took care of himself, a small sort of bond formed. He had told him how he had been hurt once before, how he had hoped to right his past with Ink, and how he realized that it just wasn’t possible.
“She cannot think right,” Juliek had once said, “It is not her fault that she hates and hates. Someday she v’ill see v’hat she has done and right herself. You must understand, Blitzkrieg.”
Oh, he understood.
He understood that the seething hatred burning a hole in his heart needed to be quenched. For too long had he hidden away within the beach home, idling away his hours by making mock friendships and obeying the will of the human he was bonded to. No, wait, vampire. Almost as detested as the demons themselves, it was no wonder she could afford to keep so many of them. She had nothing left, she could split her soul as many times as she pleased.
There were no tears today.
Setting out with ease along the sand dunes, he kept his sights on the edge of the pine forest ahead. Ink was known for taking up refuge along this area, and even at this distance he could sense her presence; it was likely she already knew he was coming. The distance closed faster than he expected and before he knew it the ancient pines towered over his head.
A hiss.
“Come out and play,” he barked, staring coldly about him, “I’m due for some attention, mother.” Another hiss came from his left, and without looking he bolted that direction, claws digging deep scores into the soft forest floor. He growled, lunging and barely missing as Ink darted from the place she had been hiding.
“You can’t kill me, boy,” she laughed, tossing her bangs from her eyes and meeting his stare, “You’re too young.” As he leapt again she shifted and easily sidestepped him. Not expecting this he hit the ground hard and skid into the gnarled base of a pine. Hissing in pain, he leapt back to his feet, tail swatting back and forth as his mother circled him, watching, waiting. Shaking his head to clear it, he waited this time and did not attack her flat out. He countered her circling and went the other way, eyes narrowed as he sought a weakness. Before he could react, however, she had made her move, barreling straight into him and knocking him hard back against the tree. He bellowed loudly, but was quickly reduced to a squeal of pain. Pinning his front leg to the ground with her claws, Ink racked her horns hard against his, catching him up under the eye with the point. Writhing in agony as crimson streaked from the wound and stained his white fur. His mother backed hastily away from him, leaving him in a lump on the ground. Without a word she hissed softly and bounded back through the woods, presumably back to her bonded.
Shaking, Blitzkrieg stood, his left eye squinted shut. She had missed the eye itself, it felt like, but the gash her horns had left was still bleeding profusely. As he looked back home, tail beginning to tuck itself between his legs, the building had never seemed so far away. Limping, he quickly glanced behind him and slowly made his way back home.
It was starting to rain.
