um ok lemme make sure I read this right is it translated:

ارموا اسلحتكم و استسلموا
rmo sleHtekem oo steslamu?

is it something like drop your weapons and surrender? ya the sentence structure is right... but on the second word *hunts through phrasbook* I think "your weapons" would be "sleHekum"... i think.... do u know what dialect it is?

I don't know. But that's what it's supposed to mean. xD

I'm going to Morocco in 2 days to the Arabic Language Institute in Fez... I'm really excited and can't wait to get back. We use the Al-kitaab books. ^_^ after this summer I plan to continue in the fall... woot...

My last Arabic teacher recommended the Hans Wehr dictionary. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet as I haven't been able to find it in stores or libraries and it's a tad expensive for me at the moment...but! He's the best foreign language teacher I've had the pleasure of learning from, so I'd totally trust his advice.

Oh, I'd also recommend the entire Al-Kitaab series for learning Arabic. (The newest versions are great since they come with dvd's of spoken passages progressing from easy to difficult.)

The Hans Wehr is very good.

And I'm also an Al-Kitaab kid smile

I think the kh is a little harsher, but they're close.

And so is the word "stable" (for horses). The Arabic word is Istabel (استبل).

And "genie", too, of course.

Here are two interesting word etymologies that I learned somewhat recently:

Magazine... is eventually derived from Makhaazin "مخازن" which is plural for one Makhzan "مخزن" Meaning "Storage silo, containor, or so forth...

Assasin... is eventually derived from the word Hashshaasheen "حشاشين" which is plural for one Hashshaash "حشاش" literally meaning: "One who consumes Hasheesh 'حشيش'" I beleive it was the name of a religious order in the Levant during the time of the major Crusades who used political assasinations as a main tactic in extending their influence, who ritually used hasheesh.

That's generally correct. Actually, it's more like:

اِرْمُوا أَسْلِحَتَكُمْ وَ اسْتَسِْلمُوا

Transliteration: irmoo asliHatakum wa-staslimoo

It states: "Throw your weapons and surrender"

irmoo: Throw (verb, requestive tense, masculine, plural)
asliHatakum: your weapons (noun, propper by addition 'to "masculine you"', femanine, plural)
wa: and (tool "or adaah" or letter, addition)
(i)staslimoo: surrender (verb, requestive tense, masculine, plural) *the (i) isn't pronounced to maintain fluid pronounsiation.

**Note: there is a fatHah on top of each of the two ت's in the sentence.

EDIT: Oh... about the second word:

سلاح (silaaH) weapon
أسلحة (asliHah) weapons
أسلحتكم (asilaaHatakum) your weapons

EDIT: Now that I think about it, this is something that seems military officers might want to use... neutral

How do you say I love France in Arabic? assuming that the speaker is female razz

أنا أحب فرنسا

Transliteration: anaa uHibbu faransaa

Anything I mention is in the Modern Standard for until I state (or you recognize) otherwise. 3nodding

EDIT: I forgot to mention: The singular speaker's gender doesn't affect the verb. So, the above statement can be used by either male of female.

Now that I think about it, even in English: "I love France" can be used by either a female or male speaker. That is also the case with Arabic.

I personally think that, vocabulary-wise, Arabic and other Semitic languages are relatively easy ^^

Grammar is usually a big issue, and sometimes pronounciation...

Why not visit the "Basics of Arabic" thread... Might give a little bit of background.
