Dodger's bright eyes squint in pleasure while Hawthorn preens her, a contented little sigh escaping as she leans into the gesture. She doesn't stop in her ministrations, however, and makes sure to clean his side as thoroughly as possible. Her words are mumbled around a beakful of feathers, "When w'got separated I found a perch onna branch, next to th'trunk like you said, but then a branch came outta nowhere an' knocked me clean off, so I I--"

She shrugs and snuggles in closer. "Well, I 'membered this place from before, an' I was kinda close, so I came here. We tried t'get the plank up to block the entrance, but it was too big for us." If Osprey or Bumblebee had been in easy view they'd see the smug little smile that creeps across Dodger's beak at that, but she refrains from mentioning the difficulties they'd had in the attempt.

Osprey's eyes went wide and the corners of her beak tugged into a grin. "Oh! It's been s'neat! Wha'wi'th'storm!" As her excitement built, her words started to run together, as she did when she was jovial.

"But... But I g'separated from my minder. I miss him." Her words slowed and her eartufts flattened against her skull. "B'th'wind was blowin' all 'round and I was all like 'Woah!' an' I almost flew inna a tree, an' then I found dis place."

Hawthorn's wing pulls Dodger close against him in a brief hug-- it's also partly an apology, because his attention for the moment is on the younger fledglings. He does nod to his ward's words, but the bends over the other fledges. Osprey receives a very brief ear-tuft nibble. "Don't worry. After this storm blows over, I'll make sure you both get back to your minders... or does he mind you both?" Hawthorn's head tilts. "Can you tell me his name, and what he looks like?"

So saying, he opens his wing just a tad so that he can get a better look at Bumblebee, whose silence worries him slightly. But the fledge seems intact-- just shy-- and the wing closes again. Things are slowly starting to get warm and cozy for the fledges, although Hawthorn himself is beginning to tremble.

Bumblebee shrunk down a bit farther when Hawthorn opened his wing to look more closely at her, not on purpose, but still a bit embarrassed to be snuggling up against the adult she did not know at all. She lifted her head a little to look up at Hawthorn when she felt him begin to shiver, worried for him, but not sure what to say.

Vaguely disappointed, the aberrant fledgling can't help but sigh a little as she continues to preen her teacher. Why should he care about those two? They're just dumb and.. and.. boring. And dumb. What is Bumblebee even doing? Hawthorn asked her a question, and she's just sitting there like a stupid dumb rock. She should've dropped the plank on her own head.

The trembling of the shadow causes her to grind her beak in worry, and then she begins to preen him even more aggressively. Stupid, stupid. Why did she have to go and get separated from him? If she'd been able to stay close then he wouldn't have been out flying in the storm all that time. What if he gets sick? Is he hurt? If anything happened to him... Dodger peeps quietly, distressed at the thought, and then focuses on her self-appointed task to stop herself from thinking too much about it.

"Papa Twist!" Osprey peeped anxiously and glanced to Bumblebee, then to Dodger. Hawthorn was shuddering and Dodger peeping, which made the younger fledgling remember her worry from earlier. "H'name'i'Papa Twist... H'brown 'n' blue 'n... Wildtype, methinks? I wanna go back. I wanna go back soon." She struggled to keep her worry down and she did not want Bumblebee and Dodger to see her in such a state. They might be just as unforgiving as Songbloom.

The adult wills his own shivering to stop-- it will warm him up, true, but it will also distress the fledglings. He glances down at Dodger's suddenly-aggressive preening, and briefly closes his eyes until he can get a new grip on the situation. A few hours in a shelter will not damage any of them permanently, although for the Teacher-- who is not used to dealing with more than one fledge at a time-- it will be a bit trying.

A brief moment of silence passes before Hawthorn's eyes snap open. He's suddenly animated again, and gives both Osprey and Bumblebee a big smile. "Patience, little ones! We'll find your 'Papa Twist' as soon as the storm blows over, I promise. Dodger and I will make sure of it. Right, Dodger?"

The male peers down at his ward expectantly.

Bang! That was close, with both thunder and lightning nearly at the same time. Lightning must have struck somewhere in Deep Woods. Crash! An even louder crack of lightning. The night is turning into day by the flashes of lightning as the storm seems to unload the last of its fury over Deep Woods.

When the mayhem finally stops the storm seems to have spent most of its energy. It doesn't rain quite as much anymore. Is it over? No... Not quite. An even louder noise fills the air.

Bumblebee squawked in surprise at the first crash, then again, with a startled hop, at the second. She sat back, her eyes wide. "Whatwasthat? Whatwasthat?" she chittered nervously.

As lightning brightens the sky and the Thunderbird claps his wings with renewed vigor Dodger utters another distressed little peep. And then she peeps again when the tree trembles and the forest screams, but this cry is muffled by Hawthorn's feathers. She fidgets and trembles, trying to bury herself deeper into his side for safety while also trying to keep herself from hiding, to be brave and strong. And then she stops, steps back a bit, and huffs softly. "Y-yeah, we'll find Papa Twist," Dodger replies, trying to hide the fear in her eyes and her voice as she looks up to her teacher for reassurance.

All of the comotion from the Thunderbird caused little Ossie's feathers to stand on end. The young flegling let out several frantic peeps, which became louder after the crash.

"Papa! Papa! Papa! Ohnowhatifhe'scrushedandmushedandIwanthiiiiiiiiiiim!" The frantic fledgling peeped and waddled anxiously away from Hawthorn. She wanted to get out and to see, but the plank that the teacher had placed was in her way.

Even Hawthorn flinches at the sudden cacophony that fills the classroom's hollow, but his eartufts perk and his face twists sharply towards the opening. Between the rain, the panic-noises the fledges are making, and the plank covering the hollow's opening, the Shadow male has no idea exactly where the sound originated from. But he does know what it meant-- something big, collapsing or falling or otherwise being destroyed. It's a bad sound, and it could mean lives lost and a scar in the heart of the forest.

But there's nothing they can do about that now. Hawthorn remains exactly where he was, his wings snugging Bumblebee and Dodger closer to his sides. He does not launch himself after Osprey, because there is nowhere that the little fledge can go. "Shush, shush..."

The rain lessens outside, and it's easier to hear Hawthorn's gentle voice. "That was just the last of the Thunderbird's ire. He's moving off now-- listen..." And indeed, it does seem that way. "That's good news. It means we'll be able to return you to your minders sooner than I anticipated. We'll find Papa Twist, who I'm very sure is a sensible fellow and found safe shelter, just like you three did." So saying, the teacher calmly begins preening Dodger again, apparently completely unconcerned by anything that's happened.

Bumblebee sighed in relief as the sounds of the storm retreated, reassured by Hawthorn's unconcern and largely unsuspecting of the great damage that has taken place. She was exhausted from the anxiety, and still the slightest bit cold and damp in the feathers. Bee settled herself down a bit more atop her talons, fluffing up her feathers in hopes that they would dry faster.
