Ah, good old Taraxacum officinale. I'm not officially enrolling (I'll just be a bystanding participant... as someone whose worked as a botanist I might chip in here and there on something if I happen to have something neat to share) but I felt it neccesary to add in as a safety bit that if you're going to ingest T. officinale, you need to be careful where you're harvesting from. Since it's considered a weed, chances are good it's been sprayed with herbicides at some point unless its your own front lawn and you know you don't apply plant-murdering toxins. You don't want to be ingesting herbicides. sweatdrop

I need to work on some better recipes with the stuff. I've only dabbled with them, but I will say the older leaves are certainly not like spinach. It is considerably more bitter than spinach with the older larger leaves.... which is probably why I should have put them in a soup to cook out some of those bitter substances instead of sticking them in a salad. xd

haha when i was little my great grandpa tried to get me to eat some. i would never try it so I still don't know what it tastes like. (and my yard is herbicide free, .... tho, not manure free (have a horse) so lots of washing and watching where im picking is nesessary) although i do like to use it for other things. XD haha. i like to drip the juice onto cuts. i once had a nasty slice on the inside of my elbow from barbed wire, and after i washed it really good every day i dripped the juice on and (the collected dried juice turned black btw) and when i finally whiped it off, there wasnt even a scar.

Is this class just to learn about the properties of certain herbs, or are we discussing methods of actually growing the plant itself?
This doesn't really apply to dandelions in particular, of course, since they grow just about anywhere there is soil, water, and sunlight... XD

Also, there's a site I found that I actually kind of like. It has to do more with gardening in general, but it has info on commonly grown plants like herbs. Here's the link. [linkyness]

"Don't pick dandelions or you'll wet the bed!" Said my mother, repeatedly, years ago.

In old herbals they were drawn with spikey toothlike petals, which is where the name comes from - dents de lion, teeth of the lion.

we can go over the growing as well. I do usually put a section on growing each plant in the lesson.

OMG i am so sorry its taking me so long. -_- its been so busy here, but, spring break is coming up and maybe i can get caught up soon. just because im not posting regular lessons on plants doesnt mean i cant help with other things. this class is also for asking questions, not just me ranting about weeds.

Spring is coming, that means its time to start your garden. Feel free to ask about Garden design, usefullness, visual decency, companion planting, and anything else, I bet i can answer it!

Note: sorry to the mods for the double post. (needed a bump)

Dai-chan takes offense to that! (jk, I do have a BIT of a life... XD)

Anyway, on topic: I was thinking of starting a small-ish indoor garden in the corner of my room. There's a window about two or three feet away from the corner, so the plants would get sunlight, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what TO plant. I was thinking of propagating my jade (I adopted it from my mother, but she won't let me move it anywhere... XD)... But I don't want a jade-exclusive garden... XD
So... Any random ideas for decent indoor plants?

Aloe would be a good one. Also, thyme, as its a great just-in-case plant, and you can buy dwarf versions of it. tomato plants are possible; but they get big and are a pain in the but at times. just look around and find something. several of the plants listed in lessons are good for indoor growing. even parsley (if i remember right) or basil. lavender (i dont know how well it is inside) might be good because the scent of it in bloom might help you sleep.

Is it too late to join the class? I'd like very much to learn about herbs.
