I agree marching band is a sport cuz there are outside marching such as Drum and Bugle Corps. I have personally been in one myself. You get scored like a sport and excerise like a sport, so techinally when you look at the final product it's still a sport like all other

I actually saw a news report on this in sixth grade.
The reason its not credible in sports for high school credit, is because you are not learning health or fitness, youre just getting a work out
I agree it is a sport, I dont see why not
You work out, you compete, you have rules etc, so why the hell not?

I think for the people who life heavy instruments (percussion, tuba, whatever) it's more like a sport than to the flutes. And for my school, we don't march for even a full sports season, so it wouldn't count. And it's in the fine arts catagory.

i think, band is and should be considered a sport. we have to create the music, create the drill and learn it in under one week. we constantly have to go over it, redo it, recreate sets that wont work, then try it again. we march in the sweltering hot sun from 7AM to 2PM and if that all isnt enough.
what do the cheerleaders have to do? create a song that goes with music that's already been chosen. if you ask me, cheerleading is hardly a sport at all. they do so much less than we do. count our steps per day and compare it to theirs.

Marching band is not considered a sport due to the fact that it is under the catagory of "entertainment." Unfortunately, those at my school see marching band as a work easy after school activity. It would be mean to say this but I will- the people who constantly disagree that marching band is an hard core activity sport have never been to a 100 degree band camp with the blazing sun over their heads. I have done sports before marching band, and I couldn't believe how much more strenuous marching band was in comparison. Doing soccer you have practice two ours top twice a day (sometimes three), but you have constant breaks with water. In marching band, you're on turf or hard ground that soaks heat into your shoes when you stand at attention, not to mention less break and at least four more hours put into each day than with any "sport". That doesn't even count marching in parades or the show and memorizing tunes. Its like memorizing a play for football or basketball, except the music is much more complex and agonizing. Research also states the marching band is a "sport" because of the exercize, stress, and body strength gained from it. I say its a sport.

And for my school, we don't march for even a full sports season, so it wouldn't count. And it's in the fine arts catagory. I disagree. Have you ever held a flute while marching? You have to keep it level to the ground which tends to pull on your arm muscle therefore making it stronger. Its not a light instrument and it does get very heavy especially if you're not used to it. I'm not saying the the bari sax or tuba don't have it bad, but its on their body supported by their legs and torso and neck. Its all arm for flutes, and that goes the same with percussion. The percussion is placed on their shoulder and supported by their back and legs. They're heavy, yes, but there were a reason why heavy marching instruments were designed like they were. I'm not trying to dis , but I'm making a point that its an exercise to everyone in band- even the drum major who just has that mace. And why can't something be in fine arts also be a sport? An example would be ballet and gymnastics. Most marching bands do march for a full season.

Band is most definitely a sport. Especially down in the southern states. I have two words: "August Heat" Down here it hot (over 100 degrees farenheit) during the months of marching band. So not only are we doing strenuous activities but we sweat like pigs!! If that's not a sport, then there's a lot of things that are sports that shouldn't be considered so.

Some of the kids of our band want to make it like a P.E credit and a performing arts credit. but yes band is a sport. dude we train just as hard as out football team. heck we may even train more than the football team. We have more trophies than the sports in our school all of them put together. That shows how bad @$$ we are.

i do believe marching band is a sport. i believe my school considers marching band a sport. i talked to my counselor about my credits for p.e she said that that i'm ok, because at the end she will write in as p.e credit. on computerized school transcripts it isnt counted as p.e. for us if marching band wasn't a sport then why would we get the papers for p.e that 9th graders(those papers that all 9th graders have to do, its the one everyone has to do as 5th graders and 7th graders). also i would believe that our school sees marching band as a sport because they have seen us practicing afterschool for 2 hours on mondays and wednesdays, 3 hours at night on thursdays, and 7 hours on saturdays. also running(suicides, indians, and rifles) our asses off each practice. also some of the administrators in our school goes to see us at the LAUSD competition. So i guess the school does consider marching band a sport.
