User ImageAh, well that's good. ^-^

Yes... some of the names were changed quite a bit! ;O

I prefer Terra to the name Tina, though I prefer Mash and Gilbert, to Sabin and Edward.

Gilbert and Edward seem like "spoony bard" names, so I'm satisfied either way. x'D

Oh, doesn't FFV's Rena have a different name as well? I can't recall though... I think it starts with an "L".

Yeah, they call her Lena. What I do know is that the Japanese don't have the "L" in their alphabet and since "R" and "L" sound alike, they spell it with "R." Whoo! I know at least ONE concept of Japanese! xd Man....I feel so inferior......I feel the least Asian here....even though I am.....

You're amazing Ryu...considering that you're not even Japanese! biggrin

Firstly, A: My statement is based on the PRIME SOURCE and the prime source is NEVER moot. In the case of a translation, the prime source ALWAYS WINS. Period. End of sentence. Things get lost and changed in non literal translation and especially localization. It doesn't require SE saying "oops, this is wrong" to notice errors in the altered product and bring them to light. Incidentally, this brings us to B: SE has never officially stated Aeris was a mistranslation, we know it is because we look at the character art and subsequent works and realize that it was, because, as said previous, the prime source beats the translation and C: it's not actually all that big of a mistranslation. The difference is between the lack or inclusion of a pronoun, and I cannot blame SCEA for putting one in. I simply poo-poo them on their poor choice of pronoun.
It's not like the english scene actually means what you interpret it to mean, and looking at the japanese script, and dismantling thereafter, merely invalidates your specific interpretation.

Now then, I presume everyone here has the FF7AC DVD, and thus reminiscence. You can view the appropriate scene there. It's- as I am sure you are all aware, the scene in which Cloud saves Tifa and hangs from the cliff.

The transcript of the dialogue this scene

C: ......I think I'm beginning to understand.

T: What?

C: An answer from the Planet...
the Promised Land...
I think I can meet her... there.

T: Yeah, let's go meet her.

It's also worth noting that the Japanese version of this scene does not use pronouns, and nothing in the exchange indicates a 'her' is being talked about, either in Cloud's lines or Tifa's. Of course, a literal translation (sans pronouns) of this scene is bloody horrendous sounding English, which may account for Sony's inclusion of 'her' in the English script.

The original japanese gives a somewhat different meaning for those last two lines.
C: Socode.... Aeru to omounda

T: Un, Ai ni ikou

Translated that's

C: There.... (I) think (I) could/might meet (see what I said about sounding like crap literally? Localized, it's something like There... I think there could/might be a meeting. Loose but not as loose as the Sony translation. No mention of 'her' or anything like that)

T: Yeah. Let's go meet.

Any of you may feel free to double check that.
Dismantling coming soon.

First of all, I do know what a primary source is. Second of all thank you for pointing out the context so I can prove you wrong.

Here is the english dialogue again, just for reference.

Quote:
Cloud “...I think I'm beginning to understand.”

(Tifa looks up at him.)

Tifa “What?”

(Tifa holds on tighter.)

Cloud “An answer from the Planet... the Promised Land... I think I can meet her... there.”

Ok now let's recall what happened before this dialogue. You defeat Sephiroth blah blah and then Cloud replies, “....Lifestream?” Then you see Cloud reach for Aerith's hand as the light beam shines down on him and then Aerith reaches back. Right before there hands meet Cloud is brought back to reality and goes and rescues Tifa. Cloud grabs the ledge of the Cliff and brings them to safety. It is at this moment that this dialogue begins.

Now let's not even talk about Japanese just yet. If you take into consideration all the previous events, "I think I can meet her there" makes complete sense. Since Cloud just tried to reunite with Aerith and he speaks of the promised land, it's obvious that he is taking about meeting Aerith. Saying that "I can meet *someone* there" is completely false and out of the context. How obvious can you get? "An answer from the planet" who else could actually speak with the planet? Zack? Tifa? Marlene? CID?! Come on. You dont need a HER in the sentence to obviously know what the line means. Maybe if you are legally blind, that would make sense too. : D

If you still think you can get away with saying it's a mistranslation let's talk about the good ol' language Nihongo.

Quote:
C: Socode.... Aeru to omounda

T: Un, Ai ni ikou

Translated that's

C: There.... (I) think (I) could/might meet (see what I said about sounding like crap literally? Localized, it's something like There... I think there could/might be a meeting. Loose but not as loose as the Sony translation. No mention of 'her' or anything like that)

It's fun how you claim to know so much about Japanese but you dont even realize that there is no 'C' in the Japanese language! rofl I think you mean Soko de. Soko is one word and de is a particle, the least you could do is seperate the two. Unless you have a broken space bar or something. : ] But anyways on to the seriousness...No wait! xD I realized something else, that you seem to be a hypocrite.

It's funny how you say that there is no 'HER' in the sentence but there is also no "I" in the sentence either! So the literal translation is '__ think meet with ___ there" Using your LOGIX that must mean that Cloud is not talking about himself either! He just seems to be babbling some nonsense!

If you ACTUALLY knew something about the Japanese language you would know that you dont need to say "I" or "you" or "she/he" for it to be understood that you are talking about someone. Let me give you a VERY SIMPLE sentence so you can understand.

"watashi ha sakana wo tabemashita."
That means I ate fish. (literally: I fish ate)

But the more common sentence would be
"sakana wo tabemashita"
That ALSO means I ate fish although there is no 'I' in the sentence. It is understood that you are talking about yourself unless stated otherwise through context.

Here is another sentence. But I'll drop the word "YOU" instead.

"Anata ha nani iro ga ichiban suki desuka."
That means 'What is your favorite color?' (Literally: Your what color numberone like xD wink

But more commonly it would be
"nani iro ga ichiban suki desuka."
That ALSO means What is YOUR favorite color, even though there is no YOU in the sentence.

Still not convinced?
Let's go back to the dialogue again.

"Soko de Aeru TO omounda
Time to focus on the 'TO' now. To is pronouced as 'toe' btw. : ] To is a particle, that can be used for many different purposes. In this case it is hooked up to the word 'aeru' meet, and 'omou' think. 'To' implies that you are doing an action "WITH SOMEONE OR SOMETHING". So the dialgue is saying to meet WITH SOMEONE. You dont need a her to know who you are talking about.
Let me give you a SIMPLE example for all the feeble minds out there.

"Tomodachi TO denwa de hanashitai"
That means I want to talk WITH my friend on the phone. To implies that the action is hooked to SOMEONE OR SOMETHING.

END OF DISCUSSION.
And this is why I've had an A in Japanese for the past 3 years! I hope I made my sensei proud! mad

Cloud, zoned out in the lifestream, is led back into his body by Aerith, to Tifa, yes.

Yes. If we're just considering the english as immutable, it makes sense to refer to Aerith. But romantic it is not. It does not fit the context of his words, the lingering question of the answer of the planet, or his actions immediately thereafter. Granted, the Japanese, again, contains no specific object of the sentence, and Dismantling says the object is "friends, plural". My old copypasta data predates me locating the scan of Dismantling, and I made zero changes to it since I wrote it around three or so years ago. With the inclusion of Dismantling, I'd say it refers to a "them", specifically, the fallen friends, note the plural.

Quote:

The redundancy here is amusing. It's like saying English language language.

Wow, isn't THIS just special. Child, Co and Ko are both equally valid romanizations of the syllable. There is no C, but then again, there's no K, either. It's all just syllables. We use the letters and such for ease of comprehension. It makes no difference if I use Co or Ko because they SOUND THE EXACT SAME. As for de, I write it as attached to the word it modifies. So sue me. Again, romanization of the syllabary has no standard form, and to truly be a purist, I shouldn't have put any spaces in at all.

The use of Watashi/ Atashi/Boku/ Ore/ Fish sandwhich is not needed. If no other subject is declared, the speaker is presumed to be the subject of the verb, especially in the case of verbs like speaking and thinking. More on this later.

And this is where your fail is EPIC. "to", when it precedes Omou, means that the preceding bit of language, in this case, aeru, is what the speaker THINKS. How did you get through three years of Japanese and not get through the "I/He Said/ Thinks" grammar? I mean, missing the use of to as a quotation marker is, well, it's mind boggling really. That's course one material.
Additionally, for someone accusing me of ignoring the context, well, isn't that egg on your face, eh?

Aha it seems I've found the actual POINT of your post. It's funny how you seem to hide what your saying behind complex words and 'primary' sources. So basically YOU think that the ending is not romantic and Cloud is refering to his friends in general? Well that's right and wrong. I couldn't care less if you thought it was romantic. Though it's funny that most Japanese consider the ending of FFVII to point toward Clerith and not Cloti. : O So I guess that's YOUR interpretation. Sorry sir but opinions dont constitute as primary sources. : ] Where is evidence to say that Cloud was talking about his friends? The whole point of me restating the events was to show no mention of anyone but Cloud Aerith Tifa and Sephiroth. (LOLZ CXS ISH CANON) If as you say, Cloud was refering to his friends in general why was it just Aerith's hand that reached to Cloud? What about Zack? Or say Jesse/Biggs/Wedge? And if we bring in the mention of theme's, Aerith's theme is also playing as well. And the lingering words about the planet also make sense. Who talked about the promised land besides Aerith? Sephiroth? Because that's defiently whom Cloud is yearning to meet. rolleyes
It's also odd how your the only person who has ever brought this theory up. Maybe that's because it's just a theory with no solid evidence to back it up. : )

Sir, if you are so smart then I dont see why you are pining to debate with a 15 year old. Dont you have a job or something?
I should make a new show, "are you smarter than a 10th grader" I'm sure it would be a hit!

I never hid what I was saying. It's not my fault if you only have a rudimentary grasp of the english language. And please, don't attempt to paint this as simply my opinion. Because I can back up what I say with the original script and dismantling. To say nothing of the concepts of continuity of theme and the utter lack of Cloud showing romantic interest in Aerith any other time during the game.

Quote:
Well that's right and wrong. I couldn't care less if you thought it was romantic. Though it's funny that most Japanese consider the ending of FFVII to point toward Clerith and not Cloti. : O

Hi, baseless claim! Funny how no one has ever provided demographics for this sort of thing, and also funny how the Japanese use the term CloAer, not Clerith. And funny how straight up google searches show that CloAer is nearly an order of a magnitude less popular than Cloti when searching in Japanese on google. That last bit isn't definitive proof, but an interesting statistic nontheless.

Quote:

Because she was leading him back to the real world. If you recognize Maiden, anyways. According to dismantling, it's just 'the hand' which resolves itself into Tifa's.

Quote:
What about Zack? Or say Jesse/Biggs/Wedge? And if we bring in the mention of theme's, Aerith's theme is also playing as well.

Yes. None of those people were in the active party, or were aiding the party beyond death. Continuity of themes, about characters the party gives two smegs about after all. Aerith has been helping the party with Holy, by keeping Tifa protected from lifestream poisoning til she made it inside Cloud's otherwise closed heart, now she's helping Cloud back to Tifa. Continuity of theme.

Quote:

Everyone talked about the answer from the planet, actually. There was an entire scene with Bugenhagen just to hammer the idea into your face. Remember how it was lingering over their heads the entire second half of the game? Especially after Bugen said Humanity might be wiped out?
And cloud is not yearning. He's stating comprehension. It is Tifa who expressed desire. If you're shipping anyone based on that scene, ship TifAer.

Quote:
It's also odd how your the only person who has ever brought this theory up. Maybe that's because it's just a theory with no solid evidence to back it up. : )

Said a Cloud/ Aerith shipper. The irony is palpable.

User ImagePink, just try and calm down, ^^;. I don't think anyone is trying to "scare" or "intimidate" anyone here. I think that, Ryu is trying to prove his proof, and you are trying to say how it isn't valid, which I find interesting. Erm--- but it is getting a bit carried away. No offense Pink, but Ryu hadn't insulted you in any way, but you called him a hypocrite, a cereal box, and said that he was hiding behind "complexity" which to me as I read it, sounded pretty logical and simple. : X Then again as you admit, you're only fifteen and still have a lot to learn. I'm not calling you dumb, because you are posing very intelligent responses. It's just that the un-needed sarcasm should be cut out, don't you agree? And, if you chose to argue with Ryu in the first place, you should have prepared yourself for an answer that you may not have liked. You know? :] So, I suggest that you try not to disprove things unless you can do so without being so defensive of your point. I mean, it's good to get defensive, but not as to where you have to insult members with passive aggressive manners. : X

But, you mentioned Aeris's theme in the end. I think I posted this already in the Final FMV section (Which is where all of this really should be) where, Cloud reaches up for Aeris's hand and her theme is playing. Just when he iis about to grab it, her theme stops instantly, as Tifa's hand is shown and then her theme starts to play. Why is it that when Aeris's theme is playing it's Cleris, but when Tifa is actually touching Cloud, talking to him, and her theme is also playing, it's merely platonic? :/ I'm not sure I understand.
And you said the Japanese consider it to be more of a Cleris ending? But, I see no proof of this, darling as you are. Like I asked you, when is the final FMV brought up again? I didn't see it anywhere in the Ultimania, and you'd think as a big "Cleris" point, it'd be in Aeris's section or some-where in the Ulti/Maiden etc.
And actually, it was everyone's dream to find the Promised Land. ^^; At least, that's what I got out of it.
