I picked Clapton, but I like the late 60's Cream clapton, had an awesome sense of blues phrasing and was an amazing player! However my favorite guitarist is John Frusciante, as well as Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

Too bad people are so focused around the older guitarists that they pay no attention to the more modern music and guitarists that rock a whole hell of a lot more(In my opinion), such as Synyster Gates, Alexi Laiho, Empuu Vuorinen, Jade Puget, etc. etc. I can go on forever.
Compared to all of the older guitarists who everybody focuses on nowadays, since they are indeed the ones who inspire the modern guitarists for the more modern bands, these modern ones go extremely undercredited and utterly unrecognized today when the topic of a fameous guitarist comes up. People are so concentrated on people who became fameous 20-50 years ago that they completally ignore the ones today's modern music. Of course a major cause of that may be that most people grew up with the older music from then and pass it on to their children, but come on, us newer people need love too, lol.
Of course you have to exclude crappy music like My Chemical Romance, The Hives, Good Charlotte, etc. etc.. That music sucks horribly and doesn't even deserve to have the term "guitarist" graced over their abomination to the instrument.
Don't get me wrong, I love Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, etc. etc. it's just that the idea of the more modern musicians not getting any attention simply because the others came along first is sorta' annoying to me.

I'll start off with agreeing with you. Alot of newer guitarists ARE very technically talented, but also also lose the sence of what music is. Music is melody. Bands like cannibal corpse have no melody. They got so wrapped up in the technical side of things that I believe they forgot the purpose of the guitar. There are alot of new guys that ARE that good and DO deserve the credit. I like Jeff Loomis' playing alot. The dude from sonata arctica is decsent too. Alexi Laiho is realyl good too (the album sucks whale a**!),
I guess part of the reason people still continue to like some of the older guys is because they are still making music and not a technical exibition. Y'know what I mean? If some one was holding a GNR CD and a Cannibal Corpse CD and asked me which one sounds better I would tell them GNR. but if he asked me which ones play faster I would say CC.

I'm a Santana worshipper personally. Perhaps he's not the most madly skilled guitar player, but the stuff he writes is, in my opinion, genius.
