At Fort Hold "Pleased to meet you Farin. Moth's rider." It was different shaking a gloved fist, but it was not Kyira's mentality to wonder if it could be a diversionary tactic. Thinking she saw the dragon nod at her earlier comment Kyira turned to her slightly. "And you too, Green Moth."
Breathing in the cool breeze Kyira let her eyes shut in pleasure momentarily. Returning her gaze to Farin, she ignored the rider's coolness -if anything dismissing it as the attitude of one who has been delegated to run an unfavorable errand. "oh, I had lunch in the hall while the firelizard took the message." Kyira replied airily. "They feed us plenty her so I'm sure to be fine until the eavening meal."
"A longer trip? I wouldn't notice the difference probably. It's been nearly ten turns since I came to the Healer Hall." Grinning excitedly, she continues, the memory obviously a happy one. "I was brought in on a green then too. They're so pretty." Her own sea-green eyes sparkle happily.
Waving a hand nonchalantly towards her things Kyira continued, still keeping a tight hold on the package that was secured in the sling over her shoulder. "This is everything. The Healer Hall let me have a few straps..." Her voice trailed off as she glanced at them. "I've heard that dragonriders check their straps frequently, but I didn't know where to begin with these. I don't know if you want to check them or if you happened to bring some from Rias." Suddenly Kyira looks discombobulated, as if she thinks this is something she should know but did not think to ask anyone.
If possible she holds the parcel tighter. "This should be safe enough on me, right? The MasterHealer used the sling & furs this way to bring his FireLizard egg home & thought it would be. Safe for the medicines, that is."
Even as she talks and awaits an answer, Kyira helps move her things nearer to Moth so that she might assist in attaching them to the green's back if permitted. "Did they tell you about the innoculations, or just that you had to pick up a Healer?"

Fort Hold The soft breeze ruffled still Farin's hair and tall form. "Not much longer. If you don't oftenly ride, you won't notice at all. You might feel a little ill for a day however, as Fort is a considerable altitude change from Rias. Even in the cliffs, we're near below sea level." Moth lightly craned her neck, opening the corners of her wings to catch a bit of that shifting wind. Her head arched to the side, and she lightly folded her arms down, laying flat on her belly to make any climbing on a bit easier for the inexperienced. She looked pleasant. Greens were pretty. Farin turned her eyes from Moth's own straps, and regarded the ones the girl held in her hands. She turned away for a moment, and with a hand hooked to one of her own dangling straps, she hoisted herself onto Moth's shoulder blade. "Well, if they're cracked they're no good." She responded, and with a stretch of an arm, pulled at one of her own pouches on the opposite side of Moth's back. "We always carry one roping for others or for accidents." Her eyes flicked to the side. "But accidents shouldn't happen if the rider has half a brain." She mutter curtly. With a wave of her hand, she dismissed it, and stretched it out to take any of Kyira's belongings and tie them down. For a moment she looked back down to the parcel swung around her waist. "Well, between doesn't last longer then a few seconds. If it can carry a firelizard egg, it should be fine." Squinting, she remembered Fleckin back home, the only one currently looking after a small sick lizard she'd accidentally acquired. He's a good flitt. Moth rumbled. Farin simply umphed, and shook her head. Even if the bronze was a good flitt, that didn't mean he made a good nurse. She supposed she could have asked Araye to watch for it...but she was attempting to keep it out of public knowledge until it lived or died. She blinked, and patted the side of Moth's throat. Before she was just starting to look distracted, she glanced back at the pouch. "It will be fine." She reaffirmed, and pulled against one of small hook ropes to latch on an item. "Between doesn't freeze things. It'll just give you a slight chill." Farin smirked lightly, pulling her hand back down to grab something proffered. "They don't tell much. I hadn't even heard there was a vaccination." Cooly, she thought, 'Although we could have used it when everyone was dying.' "I don't know much about medicines. It does seem that most of it drifted off into the jungle. I heard it was some sort of infection, but I wouldn't be much sure with that either." She reached underneath her riding jacket, and down into her leather pant's loop. Her hand returned with a flatly crumpled piece of paper, which she stretched out to Kyira. "It's not the original order though. The message from healer hall is transcribed over to the assigned dragonrider, conveniently leaving out anything they don't consider being public knowledge." She leaned forward against Moth. "Although most of the orders don't come from Rias anymore, as we're undermanned."

At Fort Hold Kyira nods absently, taking in the rider's words and assured about the safety of the all-important medicines. "None of them looked cracked when I glanced over them, so they should be fine for this." Lifts first her trunk, then instrument cases to the Farin even as she helps secure them in place. "It's just stuff anyway-replaceable. Fetching people must seem so dull compared to riding Thread." Kyira continues flippantly "but I suppose it could also be nice if you want an excuse to just get out. Then again, as a DragonRider you probably have more freedom than us landbound folk."
"A change in altitude?" Again she nods, her head tilting as if recalling something. "Yes. That would effect something in the inner ear, throwing off balance & possibly stomache for a little while at least." Kyira shrugs noncommitally. "Or no reaction what-so-ever. I didn't have any problems when I came here from Mardella Hold -that's in Tillek." The carefree girl added helpfully. "I never checked to see if the altitudes were different. It's like why some people get seasick & others don't. Do you get seasick? I bet you don't have to worry about that, now that you have your beautiful green Moth."
Her larger belongings strapped down, Kyira hands up the two smaller carisaks. Sighing, she continues rambling. "E've lost so much of the ancients healing knowledge, more than simply not having some of the tools they seemed to have had judging by the few records we can still decypher. They knew so much more about the intricate workings of the human body. It's like a very efficient machine." She smiles, as if accentuating her point. "However, even they couldn't always tell in advance when a plague or other illness was coming. Sure, they could prevent certain diseases that were common & kept recurring, but for the others they could only do what we're trying to do: make sure it's stopped for good. Try to make it so that the same sickness won't strike again." Looks toward the sky thoughtfully, humming softly. "That's what they were doing then too, only on a much bigger scale because all of Pern was affected." Singing lightly & carelessly the soprano part of 'Moreta's Ride' Kyira reitterates through the Harper song how the Healer's & Moreta were not only attempting to stop the disease & its spread & find a cure. Her eyes sparkle as she sings a favorite line before stopping. "There was now way then to prevent the deaths before it happened, & make sure it didn't happen again." Her eyes grow sad, not the saddness of knowing the pain personally on such a level, but like that of something similar. "Queen & rider died then too... I can't imgine what it was like for the weyr... I can only hope to keep the survivors & those newcome to the weyr from a reaccurance." Sighing, she smiles, as if reassuring not only the rider, but herself as well. "We can't change the past, or how quikly a cure can be made. We can only do what we can when we can."
Brightening, as if casting darker thoughts aside Kyira rambles on as she climbs beside Farin. "Rias is near the sea, right? I wonder if you've doll'fins there..." Smiles wistfully & a bit dreamily as she possitions herself, letting the green rider help her make sure she is strapped on securely. ((I hope you don't mind me having Kyira climb up on her own... It'd be in her nature to do herself & I wasn't sure if I should have Farin offer her a hand-up or not. Not sure it's in her nature, plus I try not to impose actions.))

Fort Hold Farin simply shook her head, listening to the girl chatter. It wasn't an agitated headshake however, and held a sort of twinge of partial amusement. Moth bubbled amicably underneath her, the dragon's rips pressing against the warm ground from her idling. "Fighting thread is what we do, but it's hardly all we do." She spoke, fixing the last rung to expand the saddle's circular girth. "The Weyr is undermanned, and a good lot of us have been hoisted with weyrling duties." Not that this particular excursion was a job for a weyrling either- but her previous two certainly had, and the temperance was beginning to run thin on Farin's graduated patience. "I've never been seasick." Farin spoke, thoughts of the sand and beaches coming into mind, a small sliver of enjoyment she privately indulged. "Moth loves the sea as well. I would suspect you'll see a lot of it around Rias. Most people there born are island people, and herd people." As Kyira handed over a pair of carisacks, she began to loop them around a small metal clasp, which was then fastened with a strip of narrow leather. She was singing now, a ballad that was well known to most of Pern, and to Farin's ears. It was a popular request during the sick times, Farin recalled briefly. "Yes, we lost the Weyrwoman. Ariath, and her rider Ephia have taken over now, but we're still playing catch-up with our duties. We've only just assigned a new Weyrleader, although;" She bit a strand of twine which she had used in place of a tiny letter strap that looked not strong enough to hold the sack. "- It isn't sure how well a brown Weyrleader will go across the rest of the Weyrs." It looked as though the girl was ready to go. With a sidestep, Farin moved aside to balance on Moth's shoulder ridge, knowing Moth's body about as well as her own. As soon as the girl was situated, she briefly tugged the hooked ropes, and pulled herself in front of her. Moth rose, her large wings unfurrowing, although she did not yet lift off from the earth below. She leaned her head forward, quickly stretching her tired neck muscles. She spent a few more dwindling looks about Fort Hold, and the rock structures in the distance. With an absent hand, Farin reached behind her back to pull the curly mass of hair behind the nape of her neck, and secure it down into a round bun before flight. Behind her, Kyira continued to speak of the illness and Rias. "That applies to most things in life." Farin spoke, her eyes slanting to the side. "You can't ever prepare for what eternity holds. Not even the ancients could do that." With the conversation switching quickly to Rias and more interestingly to Farin the sea, she added: "There are dollfins in Rias, although not so much as a couple miles down the coast. The waters are warmer there, and there are small fishing holds which attract a lot of them to their shore. You can see the sea from Rias, although it's fairly rocky until you go down a bit." Adjusting herself finally, she gave Moth a light pat against the shoulder. "We will go now." She spoke, and leaned into the straps. "You won't fall off, even if you feel like you will." She disclaimed, remembering that being the biggest problem people seemed to have when riding a dragon. 'Let's go home.' Farin thought, tired from the days other chores. And we will. Moth rumbled. With a quick crouch, Moth's muscles twitched and her wings expanded. Carefully she pushed off, and made a slower climb to higher altitudes then she could have possibly managed, taking care to not angle her back so much. They swayed for a moment about the thermals, occasionally bobbing and dropping amongst the winds. Moth wheeled, sliding her form to the left, calculating her position and relaying the brain marked image of Rias in the sunlight. "Now, we will go between." Farin sternly amongst the whipping winds, and with a last pump of her wings, Moth vanished into the sky. (( I don't mind much with small character avataring. XD Certain things like, "You push someone, and they move back" are usually pretty typical for anyone, so it's of no problem. Like now, you can assume that after what you wish to say about between, they will appear over Rias.))

((coolies. smile ))
The pure thrill of being a'dragonback, with the wind in her face was enough to still Kyira's voice & mind for a brief fleeting instant.
The Journeyman Healer could just make out Farin's voice against the strong winds. "Now, we will go between."
Then they were there. Kyira's mind told her it was but moments between, but still the cold empty 'nothingness' that was between chilled her in ways that gave further pause to any tangenting thoughts other than wondering if she would ever be warm again. Even through her new wherskin riding gear, which Kyira could not even feel, the cold enveloved her. In ten turns time she had nearly fogotten the terrifying wonder that is between.
Still, it was little more than the time between one brath & the next before they appeared over Rias Weyr. Kyira squinted in the bright mid-day Southern sun almost directly overhead. No wonder Farin looks so brown... It was good to feel Farin in front of her & Moth beneath her once more. That had been a little unnerving. In the warm Southern climate it took no time at all to warm thoughrally from the chill of between. In fact, the Northern bred Healer was wishing that she could shed her riding gear & get down to the cooler clothes underneath as soon as possible.
The crash of a wave upon the shore caught her attention & Kyira practically squeeled in joy to see coastline again after so long. Closing her eyes she breathed in heavily the wonderfully salty scent of the sea. There were other scents in the air that she could not place; green scents, Southern scents. This place is so beautiful... Kyira could not help but think to herself with a happy sigh. The soft blue of the sky, the clear blue-green of the sea, the lush gren of the jungle with more living plants than Kyira had ever seen... all of it widened her eyes & kept her looking around eagerly. "oh!" The happy gasp of delight escaped her lips. "It's lovely!"
A splash in the distant sea made her wonder if it was caused by fish or doll-fins. Farin's earlier words came back to her. "You called them doll-fins too! My mother always insisted I continue calliong them shipfish even after they said they were doll-fins? How did you know what I was talking about? Have you talked to them too?"

Kyira let the words sink in. "Bonding with doll'fins...?" Her mind reeled in a happy haze. Wouldn't that be something... "They swim after the dragons too? That must be fun!"
The healer's eyes sparkled watching the waves as they descended. When the little bronze popped in over Farin's head, startling Kyira. "Oh! A bronze firelizard!" She laughed at the way he seemed to be accusing Farin of some wrongdoing. "Yours?" The surprise was revelant in her tone, only important Masters & lords being able to aquire a firelizard in the North. Realization dawns quikly upon her, widening her eyes. "OF course, it's easier to find eggs down here... more firelizards & more coasts in the South!"
As the smooth white sureface of the weyr bowl gleemed closer Kyira could heartily appretiate even the beauty of the stone weyr. It seemed everything was lovlier in the South. Then too, she could see many dragons sunning themselves in the warm midaday sun; far more dragons thean she had ever seen. They truly enhanced the beauty of the weyr with their sparkling colored hides. It was an amaizing sight. Never as a child would the sea-hold bred girl have imagined she would be seeing such wonders, much less living in a weyr. Even if it was only a short posting Kyira knew it would be memorable.
Farin moving to the shoulder of her green threw Kyira's thought off momentarily. As the green rider pointed out the location of the healer wing & barracks Kyira took careful note, following her directions with her eyes. She could learn more precise directions to other places in the weyr in time. "Thanks, Farin." She smiled at the dragonrider, honestly thankful - not just for curtesy's sake. Reaching up, she loosened the ties on her riding cap & removed it with a heartfelt sigh, revealing a spiral of braided dark honey colored hair pinned to her head. Laughing she tied the cap yo a strap on her jacket. "I'm looking forward to getting out of this now overly-warm riding wear." She smiled, unstrapping herself at the same time & figuring out the best way down, not wanting to be a further burden but also not wanting to hurt Moth in the process. Or damage the Healer Hall's package.
"You said before that the weyr is undermanned?" It was aquestin only in part; more of a contemplation as the healer's eyes showed she was contmplating something. "I can take most of my things in myself... but I will need help with the chest." She glavced at it's bulk meaningfully. "I may have been able to get it on a dragon, and back off again momentarily, but it's too awkward & heavy for me to take far alone." That was an understatement; the chest was nearly as large as the short healer. If she owned more clothes for it to hold the two females probably would have needed assistance back at Fort. "I don't want to impose on your time more than I already have... are there any apprentices I may borrow? Just to grab the other side of course. I'm certain it will be fine on the ground here until I can come back to it."
While she spoke Kyira chose to slide down the side of the Green to reach the ground. If she was not so worried about protecting the medicine & making certain to land on her feet without falling forward she would have thrown up her hands & enjoyed the "ride". As it was, Kyira struck the ground firmly but with an obvious smile of enjoyment. "Thanks for the ride, Moth." and for the slide too! She thought to herself with a silly grin.
Still smiling she looked up at Farin, waiting to help unload the dragon of her burden.

"Oh, would you? That would be ever so nice." Slipping the carisaks over her head Kyira lets them settle onto her back. "My instruments are bulky but rather light. They shouldn't weigh the trunk down." So speaking she lays both instrument cases flat on top of her trunk. "Maybe while you're there I could go ahead & give you the injection... save you the trouble have coming back some other time for it." She shrugs noncommitally. "I'm supposed to make sure that everyone gets the shot, even if they've already had the sickness or seemed immune. There wasn't much to go off of at the Hall, but still they don't want to take any chances. Being right next to Harper Hall we probably hear 'Moreta's Ride' more than most & it serves to remind us how we can't always prevent a terrible thing from happening, but we can do all we can to stop a reoccurence!"
Kyira laughs nervously. "I know: I'm reitterating again... It's just something I feel strongly about."
Perceiving Farin's lightened (even if only marginally) mood, Kyira smiles gently -her eyes friendly & thoughtful. "It must be good to be home."
Kyira bends & grabs the handle of one end of the trunk, testing to see if she can lift her side with only one hand. She can. Straitening, she smiles warmly at the rider. "Shall we head on in? If I bring up the rear we'll probably go faster, since you already know the way." Grins sheepishly, knowing her own falisies. "Then I'll be less likely to slow down & look at something interesting. I can do that on my own time once I'm settled in."

Farin's strides were slightly longer than Kyira's own, but she had no problem keeping the pace the dragon rider set. She hated bringing up the sickness so often; she knew it had to be a painful subject. She just wanted to get the injections out of the way, the sooner the better, so she could learn what stood for "normal" in the weyr. Plus, the sooner she gave everyone their shots the sooner she could stop bringing them up & they could put the whole incident behind them. The green rider's reluctant decision to get her's overwith brightened Kyira's spirits immeasuably. It was a good sign. Kyira could understand the trepidation Farin must feel; most people did not get injections very often, if ever. Studying the HealerCraft she was well versed in finding viens -for those injections that needed to be in viens- or avoiding them -for those that should be in muscle instead.
It was not a long trip, but Kyira was glad for the help. Glancing at the flight of steps she noted that she could probably drag her trunk the rest of the way to a room without Farin's help if the DragonRider would rather go on to her weyr. Noting the glow she smiles. "How nice! Someone must have been expecting us to leave a glow ready. That will make this easier." Sloughing off her carisaks she hooks them over a chair then gently removes the sling & sets it upon the paper littered table. "Now where is some clean..." Her voice trails off as she scours the room with her eyes, which alight when they frind what she's looking for. "Water! Perfect!" Drawing a clean cloth from a sack she lets the water drip from its casing into the basin, checking that it looks clean before washing her hands and wetting down the cloth. "Okay good! If you'll bare you're upper arm for me, DragonRider Farin, we'll get this overwith quickly so you can be on your way." Kyira withdraws a sturdy piece of sterilized hide from the sling & place it on a barren suface before stting the damp cloth ontop of it. Slipping both a needlethorn and a small vial carefully from the case within the sling Kyira turns to face Farin with a reasuring smile.
"I'm not going to say this won't hurt, but believe me when I tell you it will only sting for a little bit. You'll probably notice that the spot will feel a little odd for the rest of the day, but by sunup You won't even realise it was there."

((Just realised that we probably should have shifted to the healer Wing thread as soon as we got inside. sweatdrop I'm sure if someone with the power to move posts decides that's where we should be they'll just move them. Kinda confusing, in a way. Might as well finish up here though.))
Taking the dampened cloth Kyira scrubbed Farin's arm clean. Th enewly cleaned spot stood apart from the rest of the rider's skin, for she like Kyira was overwarnm in riding leathers in the midday heat of Southern. At least it was cooler in the shade where the sea breeze could still cool them.
With practiced ease Kyira slipped a needlethorn beneath Farin's brown skin prepared for any possible jarring if the green rider flinched or jumped. She'd used the needlethorn enough times, even if this was her first use of the medicine itself. The process remained the same regardless. In moments it was over, & the Journeywoman patted the spot clean again.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Kyira returned the vial where it belonged. She set the needlethorn off to the side, intending to boil it later if she had to sterilize it for another use. "All finished!" She sang out merrily. "Now that wasn't too bad, was it?"
"Thanks again for all your help, Farin. I don't want to keep you from any duties you might have." Glances at her things. " I can get them the rest of the way to a room... Should I just occupy an available one?" Ponders the possibilities. "I'll make sure I leave open whichever is the largest, just in case the Hall sends a Master." Kyira grins impishly. "I'm not a Master yet!"
((*sheepish* Wasn't sure how the needlethorn would be used exactly... boooks always gloss over details like that. ))

Farin sat quietly as the healer carefully passed the small piece of cloth over the spot on her arm where she was to inject the medicine. It was a peculiar sight to see, the needle, and even more peculiar when it was in the arm. It pricked, but was more like an annoying pinch rather then a real pain. Absently, Farin rubbed her two fingers together on the other side of the table, feeling the lightly bumped marks of a small flitt bite. She decided that hurt a bit more, and this mark would more then likely heal faster then she could notice any discomfort. But the injection was quickly over, and the rider carefully folded back her arm, putting a small finger over the tiny needle head amount of blood which bubbled up in a small drop. She stood, looking over to the stairway and the darkened hall. "I don't believe there should be anyone up there." She spoke, looking sharply up the steps. "There are some apprentice healers, but half of the damned lot are set to be candidates, so they've taken residency there." Although it was possible that quite a number of people snooped around in the healer hall. "I have not oftenly been up there myself." She said, shaking her head. "So I don't know what kind of rooms they have. Up the stairs to the left are some patient beds, but the lot of them are behind the door in the other side of the wing. To the other side they have the other quarters, and if there is a master's room, it would be the final room." The woman bent down, picking up her rider's jacket and placed it back on despite the heat. She lost less things that way. "Most of the Weyr has brains enough to help you if you can't find your way around. Around lunchtime and dinnertime there is a magnitude of flitts flying around the dining area, should you not be able to find that." Farin tugged on the end of her jacket, hooking a small loop around the corner of her pants where the jacket stayed in place when in flight. "I however, must go and unharness Moth." She dipped her head. And check on that flitt. "If I see anyone, I'll advise them to come down and get their shots. Although I'd expect you'll have to chase a few of them down." She spoke, shaking her head as she took a few steps towards the door, setting the glow basket down on the table for Kyira to use walking around. She'd have to remember to get some drudges down to refill the glows.
((Yea, I was thinking about that XD I think it'll be fine though, and if it's moved then it's moved. :O ))
