(( Ack, another super-late Tweek post ))
The pup snuggled herself between the tickle of the waving grass, and the warmth of Harle's thick black fur. The autumn breeze lilting by every now and then cooled her face pleasurably, but the she-wolf beside her was an effective barrier for the rest of her body.
As Harle spoke, Nessa listened quietly. Her pale green eyes appeared to stare out over the meadow, but in reality the pup's vision was inside her mind, where she was forming her own images of deer based on her elder's descriptions. Truthfully, the animals that materialized in Nessa's mind looked a bit more like wolves than anything else, and she couldn't quite picture eyes on the side of one's head correctly, but still, the alien picture vastly interested the pup.
The deer sounded almost mystical, with sticks growing out of their head and flashing white tails, and Nessa was as entranced by the mystique factor as much as their alleged beauty.
"And we hunt them?" She asked a little nervously. Harle could probably pick up the tone in the pup's voice. Fish were one thing, Nessa had always seen them as food; pretty, sparkly, but food. But the thought of bringing down something that walked on four legs like herself was a little disconcerting at first.
(( Edit: Woot! Four pages! *hi-five* Oh, and I forgot to congratulate you on your SOA! She's gorgeous. ^o^ ))

(( Nah XDD Don't worry about posting late. Post whenever you feel like it.
>3 We have pwned the page numbers.
And eeee, thankyou. I love her like, a bajillion times over. XDD ))
Harle smiled affectionately, and felt herself falling into a partial lethargy with the small pup contentedly sitting beside her. She'd never thought she'd be much for children...at least, anything more then talking to them. But if all children were like Nessa, she'd happily have twenty kids. Mate, not necessarily even required. And with a strangled laugh, she decided that her father would flip if she turned up with twenty puppies and no husband. Wouldn't that be the scandal? Old Kirra would die, that's for sure!
As she concluded her somewhat disjointed description of the deer, she watched Nessa's reactions as she stared blankly into the field. Harle could not read minds, but she could practically feel the small gears in Nessa's head spin with the idea of the great animals. Harle privately decided it was best she left out all the other kinds of deer. That would come with time. The black female couldn't resist a slight fluttering; it seemed so odd that Nessa would grow up just like everyone else. And then Harle would be old, and it would be Nessa that was the young one. For someone so used to being the baby of the woods, Harle found herself at loss for what she would do once she hit that ripe old age. Badger Kirra, she supposed.
"Of course we hunt them." Harle continued, her gold eyes glittering both from the sunlight and pure interest in the topic. She wasn't sure what kind of expert she was on the habits of the deer folk, but she loved to admire them from afar. If she died, she wouldn't mind being reborn as a beautiful elk. Harle took a deep breath. The next part of the story was difficult, and so embedded with mystery that it would be hard to explain for a child. She had a hard time comprehending it herself. "Well...The deer and wolves have a sort of compact. You see, if we get hungry, then there's nothing for us to eat. So we have to eat the deer." She paused for a moment, to let that sink it. "But, if we didn't eat the deer, and say...ate fish all the time, no one would eat the deer." She ignored bears and wild cats for now. That'd make the story far too confusing! "And if there are too many deer, they eat all the grass- and then they starve! Not to mention, too many deer makes them sick a lot. So we eat the deer, and keep them strong. They die for us, and keep us strong. It's always how it's been."
Harle furrowed her dotted brow, wondering if that was too much to comprehend. It made her feel bad for the deer, none the less, even though she knew (and had seen) the effects of too many deer in one area. It was a wolf's duty to help control the population. It was almost uncontrollable. "Of course, deer aren't helpless either." Harle went on. "Wolves only eat the sick and the old, and the very weak. A healthy deer can leap away- sometimes they can even jump so high they fly. Wolves can't catch them if they're good deer. And then they go and have good deer babies, and the babies can almost turn into flowers with their bright spots." Now, perhaps she was getting too into this.
She chuckled, and wagged her tail. "But don't worry about it. Not yet. And maybe sometime when you're older, your daddy will let me take you to see some deer. We don't have to hunt any, but they're interesting to watch. Sometimes they bang heads together." She added, deciding that that was one very interesting portion of deer life.

(( Hahah! Harle is great. x3
*squee* Awesome! And yuh! I can't wait 'til she grows. ^o^ Although I will miss having a puppy. They're easier to throw into RPs, I think. ;3 ))
Nessa tilted her head towards Harle's comforting narrative, the female's reasoning contralto bubbling in the pup's ears. Her cobalt ears, with their usual exaggerated expression, swiveled back slightly as she tried hard to concentrate on Harle's explanation. Generally, she could follow what the wolf was saying, and she was pacified by the idea that wolves took the deer's lives for mutual benefit. She particularly perked up at one point. "Uh-oh.. I only eat fish." She gave a tiny whine, though it seemed more out of thoughtfulness than anxiety. The pup's ears tilted forward at the end as well. "I know Daddy would be happy with that! You'll teach me how to keep the deer strong?" She wagged her tail, repositioning her front paws. "And you have to show me how they bang together!"
Close by, Yero found himself lulled awake by the warm sunrays, and with a yawn, he turned his crimson eyes to the sky to check the sun's position. It was getting late in the afternoon. He would have to take Nessa home soon for the night. The black wolf pulled himself to his feet, ambling over to the two females. He couldn't help but grin. They were certainly having an animated discussion. "What are you two ladies talking about, now?" The wolf gave a chuckle, smiling gratefully to Harle. "I should probably be taking the little one soon."
"Daddy!" Nessa gave a gasp from Harle's side, looking scadalized. Yero made a sympathyzing face at his daughter.
"I think it's getting to be that time."

With a deep and highly sentimental grin, Harle nodded her head gently. "I would love to show you. I'm a pretty good hunter myself, if I do say so." She chuckled, her tail thrushing. "Although I wouldn't mind being a bit bigger."
But the idea of showing Nessa how to hunt, or the fact that Nessa would even want Harle to show her how, made her feel rather flattered. She would more then willingly do so, although she supposed her parents would probably fill in the bulk of that role. But to get the chance... Usually she was the child in the picture, and very few people asked for her help. But she was determined that if the time came, she would do the best job that she could physically do.
She smiled, hearing Yero approach just a few moments before she turned to look at him. She felt at that moment, very lucky and pleased to know this pair. "Ah~ Daddy is here." She grinned at Nessa, and nodded her head sympathetically. But it was indeed getting dark, and she would hate to have contributed to Nessa missing her bedtime. It was important for pups to get their sleep. Or at least- for parents to get some rest!
She gave another look at Nessa, and gave her a gentle nudge with the side of her muzzle. "It is getting late. You wouldn't want your Mum to think Daddy had lost you now? I'll be around these woods, there will be plenty of time to talk about deer knocking their heads together. And let me tell you, there's a story behind that." The Harlequin smiled, and pivoted her ears forward.

Nessa pulled herself to her tiny feet, glancing up to Harle at the nudge with a disappointed whine. She supposed the older female made sense, but she hated to leave. Yero gave his daughter a wry smile.
"None of that now, dear. We'll see Harle again very soon." He cast his ruddy eyes on the spangled female with a smile. "Thank you for the company, Harle. Nessa certainly seemed to be enjoying herself." He brushed his daughter gently with his paw.
"Thank you." Nessa said on cue, suddenly a little shy. She wagged her tail, smiling.
"We look forward to seeing you again." The male said, his thick feathered tail also wagging gently.
With that, the father and daughter took their leave together, and made the short journey back to their home. There was little doubt in either's mind that they would find the shewolf again, and as Yero drifted off to sleep that night, he had a whiff of an idea about hunting lessons.
