His eyes changed again, but this time got brighter with curiosity. "And why do they not wish their leaders to be dressed in finery? Even if it is of a small sect, you are still a leader and, though simple in dress, why should it not be of a good quality material?" Having been raised where appearance was everything, Sol had some difficulty imaging that someone dressed so subdued could effectively capture and hold the attention of anyone for himself, let alone for a deity.

He sipped his tea, cassock resting over his lap, not quite giving it up, but not holding in to it either.

Sol looked from Jerome's cassock, to the new one. All he could see was that the material was of an obviously better quality, otherwise, they were identical.
"And wearing a garment of fine material would make you less welcoming and more intimidating? I should think it would show you were a man of good taste, whose opinion could be trusted."

"No, it would bring question as to what my activities outside of the church are. The cassocks are provided to us by the church, meeting their regulations. If mine were different from another's it would be highly suspicious." He had a distinct feeling this was something Sol would never understand.

The priest was only half wrong. He could understand how there would be suspicions if one servant was suddenly dressed better than the others, but Jerome had said he was more of an adviser or guide. Surely advisers were allowed more leeway. He thought of Hailey and Mina and the others he knew who fell under the title and the leeway they were allowed.
A frown graced his delicate features. This Church sounded quite dreadful to him. Even here, unless by personal request or punishment, the lowliest of servants was still allowed to dress decently. An image must be maintained at all times and the image he was getting of this church was abysmal.

Jerome smiled lightly at his frown, able to see the mentality that blocked Sol's mind from fully understanding. The church isn't for many, and really it wasn't for Jerome, but it was something to do at the time.

With a sigh, Sol waved in the direction of the cloth. "Well, regardless of if you wear it or not, tis yours, Jerome. If you would like, I could have it converted to a blanket. Or would that not be approved either?"

A pleased light came into his eyes at the thought of the young priest accepting a gift, though he was unaware of it. With a snap of his fingers, the young icefire phoenix known as Kuraki popped in. Sol gave a few clipped orders in the guttural tongue of the demons and Kuraki whisked the robe away and disappeared.
Satisfied, Sol turned his attention back to the priest, looking curiously at the package he pulled out. "What is that?"

Jerome smiled shyly and opened the little bag. "One of my parishioners bakes at the sweet shop down the street and she gives me extra cookies and cake bars and what not that she has left at the end of the day to give to the kids, or anyone that might be hanging about the church. Sometimes I keep a few for myself. I think she makes too many lemon lace cookies on purpose because she knows they're my favorite..."
He placed them in the middle of the table, thin cookies that were made mostly of butter, with a little flower to hold them together, and lemon and sugar for taste. The name comes from all the little holes the cookies have, giving it a lacy look.

Curious, Sol leaned forward, cosely exaaming the cookies before sniffing. His nose wrinkled, making him fainlty resemble a kitten. "They are interesting to look at. THe scent is...interesting. And you say they are pleasant of flavor?" The last part said with more than a touch of doubt.

"Oh, they're more than pleasant," Jerome took one and settled back in his chair with his tea. "But then, I know you experience flavor differently than we do, so I could be wrong. And they have some sugar in them. I don't remember if that's a problem for you or not."

And they have some sugar in them. I don't remember if that's a problem for you or not." A look flittered over Sol's face that was akin to nausea. "Sugar is...not amongst my favorite of edibles, no." Considering his species, most any foods were not on his edible list, and though the smell was pleasant, the thought of physically eating was more than a little gross to Sol.
