Hitsu smiled, "Well, circumstances aside, it's nice to meet you." She picked up the empty bowl and offered it up to Yuki, who took it quietly to be placed near the water basin. "I'm Hitsuzen, but typically just Hitsu for short." She explained, looking up to Yuki expectantly.

"Yuki." He stated in between his bites, apparently not completely enthusiastic on the introductions. He was still busy shoveling down stew, as if he was afraid of not getting his share.

Neko only snorted looking down at Mitsu, not bothering to offer up his name for her. Instead he just stood there in almost a sulking angry manner as if disappointed that Mitsu hadn’t been the bloodthirsty canine he had made her out to be. Or it could have just been his insecurities of being weaponless at the moment. Who knew?

Looking up at Yuki shyly, Mitsu gave a nod and then turned to Neko awaiting his name as well. When he only glared at her she edged back a bit in case he thought of attacking her. He didn’t seem like he was very nice at all.

Frowning, Hitsu gestured toward Neko with a tone of annoyance. "And that gruff brute that sat on you is Nekomata. He's just grumpy, I'm sure he'll get over it sooner or later. Don't let him bother you."

(( I swear it'll be shorter now. ;; *so lame* If you want to skip this jive, just read like, the last three paragraphs of the first part. Then skip the middle part, and just hunker down on the third part. I just...banter a lot. Like I'm doing now. :'D ))

To say he was distracted would be an understatement.

He had heard it carried upon the soft breaths of air, the skeleton hum of music not too far away. A violin, he noted as he crept into an alleyway, and the cantankerous voice of the accordion, wheezing and sighing its song. Raucous, joyous laughter and the scent of ale just around the corner.

But hearing it was nothing compared to the sight. Exiting the dank alley, he saw them dancing, a flurry of color and the winking of a fire, just outside the mead hall. Pastel skirts unfurling like budding flowers as young feline girls were swept across the beaten and brushed dance floor. He knew of no celebration, nor had he heard of any talk – but he found himself entranced. Why? Why did he always stop when it came to them, and why did he feel the need to watch? He had no answers, never for this question.

One young girl caught his eye. She danced amidst the others, her arms held up to the sky, spinning like a child’s top. Her rose-pearl skirts were a flurry of petals; tail catching against her dress and her hair catching upon a face whose eyes were closed. She was laughing.

He caught her across the waist, and she never stopped once despite his instantaneous appearance; instead she spun in his arms, eyes flying open. She beamed, and lowered her hand compliantly into his and lifted the side of her skirt with the other. And they were off, whirling through the small crowd, the girl’s spirit as free as a feather caught on the wind.

The song ended too soon, he reasoned when she collapsed against his chest. He aided her to a seat, and by the way she clung to his arm and wobbled slightly off kilter, he knew she was inebriated; if he was amused, he didn’t show it.

“Stay,” she half-pleaded when she succumbed to her weariness and fell into her chair. She kept a hold of his hand within both of her own, pressing her cheek to his leather-clad knuckles. An act of whimsy. She wouldn’t remember him come morning.

“You smell like the earth after it rains.” She shut her eyes and smiled, inhaling, “And like a canine” – here she laughed – “Perhaps you were who I smelt earlier in the alleys, then?”

The girl paused and sighed, pulling away and folding her hands in her lap, “But you smell much nicer now – not so wild.”

She looked up to find her dance partner gone.

____

He was never one to lend way to his emotions, so his face remained pleasantly aloof. He felt both harried and excited, however – he knew he had been near, but this near? The child made it much too easy!

He looped into another passage and stopped almost immediately, hand to the wall. Beneath the layers of cat and garbage, nestled amidst them quite neatly was the scent of the girl. He could picture her pressed to the barrel drums, fearful. He lifted his nose, kept his eyes upon where her memory still ghosted, and followed her trail with his gaze.

Soon he was running down the passage, the echo of his footfalls the only noise that followed.

____

When he had hopped the fence he had never expected a…chicken coop.

But what baffled him was how her scent came here and disappeared from where he had come, yet again. He rounded the coop several times, kneeling here and there to pass his fingers across the dust, but it was of no use; her tracks were scattered with the fresh regularity of the chickens. Then why was her scent so strong here?

He craned his head up. The house. Of course.

Rising with the grace of a sated beast, he walked around the home and lingered at the door.

He could let himself in, or he could simply knock - after all, what place did a dog have in a cat's village? He placed a hand on the door.

[How dare you put down the awesomeness that is your writing... No matter how much I know I shouldn't I'm already really starting to like Yuval. D8]

Once he'd finished gulping down his third bowl of stew, Yuki deposited the dish alongside Mitsu's, and lifted the water bin from the counter. "I'll go and empty this..." He stated, referring to the water Hitsu had previously used to wash the vegetables in. "Want me to fill it again?" He asked, looking over his shoulder to Hitsu as he stepped toward the back door with the bin balanced carefully under one arm.

"Yeah, sure." Hitsu replied shortly without looking up, before turning her attention back to Mitsu as she smiled at her assuringly. "Really now, it's safe here. You've got nothing to worry about."

At that moment, Yuki had opened the door. He froze dead in his tracks at the sight of the new stranger that stood in front of him. He gave a bit of a jolt initially, having never expected anyone to be outside their house let alone right at the door. "C-can... Can I help you?" He asked, the man's scent causing the hair on the back of his neck to stand on end, not to mention his tail.

As if sensing the presence of this new stranger, Inu’s hair began to stand up on end. Jumping to her feet quickly she stared uneasily at the door where Yuki stood, knowing that just beyond it there was someone waiting for her. She didn’t know who but she knew it wasn’t a friend.

“What’s going on Yuki? Who’s there?” Neko pushed away from the counter he was leaning on and headed for the door but stopped a good distance away sensing Yuki’s unease.

The light cast from the room threw artificial warmth over the stranger's eyes, and despite the smile that raised the corners of his lips it faltered everywhere else. He retracted his hand from the air – slowly, as though he too had been surprised -- curling his fingers to drop at his side. For a moment’s breath he simply stood there staring at Yuki, waiting for something. Something…he inhaled. Yes.

“I apologize,” he began, voice barely brushing above a whisper. “I am aware that it is very late, but I have been searching for my niece for a while as she disappeared from our tribe some time ago. I was wondering…have you seen her? She’s an impish little thing!”

The way his voice rose ever-so-slightly at the end implied endearment, and for what it was worth his deceit was convincing. Unlike others, he did not lean towards Yuki to look for the child behind him; he had more self-control – that and he already knew her to be there. He stood there smiling with sentiment he did not feel for a child he did not know.

He'd glanced quickly back to Neko as he spoke, though Yuki did not address him. His expression reflected his loss on what he was to do, and it did not change when he returned his gaze to the man at the door in haste as he spoke. "Niece?" He repeated, and it was the only immediate response that was given. Something about this man, it gave him chills, and while Yuki couldn't quite put his finger on it he was sure that it wasn't merely his scent. For an instant, he looked over his shoulder again, to Mitsu. She looked frightened, and he could sense it. Hadn't she been confused before, when they'd briefly spoken of their tribes? Yes. Something was certainly out of place here. "No." Yuki stated, "We haven't seen her." With this, he attempted to quite speedily close the door as he forced a smile to hide his nervousness. "Best of luck finding her, see ya."

Mitsu shuffled closer to Hitsu and took hold of the back of her shirt as if it would give her security. Staring at the door she bit down on the bottom of her lip nervously keeping quiet. She would have to remember to thank Yuki later for saying she wasn’t here. Still it didn’t keep her from shaking, she didn’t have a good feeling about the man on the other side of the door. There was something about his voice that was off, though if she could have seen him it would only have reinforced her fear.

He felt it slide down his arm the moment the younger man hesitated. Slender, thin, cool as it pressed into the back of his forearm. His fingers curled, a movement that would go unnoticed, as he caught the sleek hilt of his blade. The question of ‘did it have to come to this’ barely ghosted his thoughts, for their only response was ‘yes, yes, yes!’

The man jammed his foot between the door and the frame, jarring its closure. He had a job to do, and he wasn’t about to quit simply because a boy had shut the door in the face; or tried to, for that matter. He leaned close to the crack in the door, lifting his arm to rest his weight against the home.

“I would advise that you open this door now, boy, while I don’t have the mind to open it myself.” He twisted his foot and edged his boot farther inside. He leaned ever closer, knowing that the other had not wandered too far.

“What is one girl to you, hm? I know there are others in there,” he murmured. “However, if you don’t give me the girl, there won’t be any.”

As the man stopped the door from closing, Yuki took it as an extremely clear sign that this guy was not playing around. Immediately, the water basin crashed to the floor, sending water and shards of clay to scatter around his feet. In desperation, and most likely lack of forethought, Yuki pressed his own weight against the door . His heart began to race, he was still trying to force his way inside, and Yuki already knew he wasn't strong enough to hold him back alone.

"What's going on?" Hitsu half whimpered. She'd gotten to her feet with Mitsu, though had only stood in silence. There was no seeing past Yuki to the figure who'd stood at the door, but now he was trying to get in, and that would certainly soon change. She took a slow step backward, her instinct to flee, yet she did not. "Yuki?" She pleaded, frightened.

He nearly shouted for Neko, but as soon as he opened his mouth the last of the stranger's words had passed his lips, and Yuki's eyes grew wide as his color paled. "Neko. Get them out of here." He hissed, as though he might actually go unheard. "Now!"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2007 6:03 pm

Neko growled deep in his throat, “ s**t!” He would rather have handed the girl over and have been rid of her but now was not the time to test this stranger’s generosity for letting them all live. “Move!” He commanded loudly to Hitsu and Mitsu to break them out of their frozen statuesque state. Shuffling them to the other door, Neko looked back at Yuki. It was obvious that he was having trouble holding back the door so making sure the girl’s were on their way out he yelled out to him. “Hurry the hell up!” It wasn’t a request it was a demand. There was no way he was going to leave him behind.

Letting out a short shriek when Neko yelled at them, Mitsu took only a few seconds to comply with his demand and made her way to the other door. Following closely behind Hitsu as Neko shuffled them out, she looked back to see Yuki still struggling to hold the stranger back. “But what about-“ She was cut off as she was pushed out the door behind Hitsu.

His offer was denied. Playing the hero, was he?

The blade of his knife jumped gracefully in between his middle and ring finger, its flat resting against them like an extended nail. The man leaned upon the hand that rested on the frame, and pulled his weight from the door – it was only momentary. In the next instant he had slammed it with his hip, throwing his weight into the shove. He continued to swing his body into the door until he heard the last dregs of Yuki’s speech.

He had no time to think; instinct drove him. Clenching the blade in his fist, the stranger tore his foot from the door and tore around the house. They weren’t going to get far – he wouldn’t let them.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 06, 2007 7:09 pm

Panic stricken, Yuki positioned himself to hold the door in place as well as he could manage, but with each impact against the door the gap grew wider. It was only a matter of time before he was in.

Frantic, Hitsu wasn't at all happy when she was forced out of the kitchen, let alone out the door. "Where's Yuki!?" She cried, vainly trying to force her way back inside. Neko wasn't the only one who wouldn't leave him behind, and she'd go back to get him herself no matter how foolish it was.

Then, he was gone. Yuki nearly crashed to the floor as the sudden lack of weight on the other side of the door sent him stumbling foreword. His stomach lurched, and he made a mad dash for the front door, stammering incoherently, praying that he didn't catch up. Neko was still lingering there, but the girls were outside the door, he caught glimpse of them as he made his way over the threshold. "RUN, GODDAMMIT!" He roared, taking Hitsu roughly by the wrist in his haste as he tried to urge them away.

When Hitsu quickly disappeared from her side, Mitsu froze on the spot hesitant to follow. Wasn’t the guy after her? Wouldn’t they be better off if she ran a different direction? All the same instead of acting on that instinct Mitsu held her ground, too frightened to move. Vainly she watched as Hitsu and Yuki fleeted away wanting nothing more than to follow them, but at the same time afraid of what might happen if she did.

Once Yuki took hold of Hitsu’s wrist and took off into the night, Neko rushed out of the house as well following close behind. Normally he would keep his focus on where he was going but for some reason he looked back and saw Mitsu still standing at the doorway. The first thought to cross his mind was good, at least they could get away while the creep of a guy was after her, but at the same time he found his feet digging into the ground bringing himself to a stop. “s**t.” Growling to himself he made his way back to Mitsu and took hold of her hand and pulled her along. “Hurry up!”
