"Brightly-colored eggs?" Tuaria repeated. It had never occured to her efore then that the mere sheen of the egg could cause so much of a fuss. It seemed so many hopes rested on the little one dwelling inside.
Now Tuaria understood why Iris had looked so sad. She must have felt like such a disappointment to their society. However, no matter how the golden-feathered child looked at it, it hardly made the elder any less beautiful.
"So...dull-colored eggs don't ever hatch into males?" the inquisitve chick questioned curiously. What a funny thing would it be if it was not the ruby egg that turned out to be a boy, but one of the lesser-shelled siblings? Could bright eggs not harbor dull chicks? Could dull eggs not harbor bright chicks?
She entertained these thoughts restlessly, preening her feathers and scratching at her talons. Tuaria was never one capable of remaining still for very long. Hopping after Koda, she was glad to have an excuse to move around without fear of getting scolded.
"Ooh, names! Names are fun!" she cried happily, have only recently learned the concept of indiviual names from the taur she had visited. Her mother had told her she'd never had need of one, but she liked having one just the same. She thought of it as her identity to the world.
"Okay," she whispered when Koda warned them to stay quiet. She put a feathered wing over her mouth to muffle her words just in case. "They're so pretty...and fragile-looking..." The thoughts burned in her mind until one by one they leaked out. "Do the others have names?" Tuaria asked Koda quietly. "Will they get them tonight? Who's their daddy? How do you know the others will be girls? How often are males born? Who decides if they'll be boys or girls?"
At Kendra's request, Tuaria beamed radiantly. She would like nothing more than another friend to play with. There were few in their colony who could stand her overabundant energy and even fewer peers who would play with her. "I'd LOVE to!" she exclaimed without thinking. Then, recalling Koda's warning, immediately hushed herself in embarressment. "I mean..." she began again in a whisper, "I'd love to!"
Kendra's comment on being 'where they shouldn't be' made Tuaria flush in guilt. She hung her head. So, they'd been found out after all. It had been too much to hope the adults wouldn't know. "Yes, Matriarch," she replied respectfully, with a sweeping bow of her wings. They were still a bit ruffled from her tumbling.
Though now...Tuaria began to wonder if she ever wanted to have chicks at all. It seemed so much was expected of them - male or female - and if they couldn't freely explore the outside world, the world where taur resided, what was the point of having wings?

eternaldelusion Liluye was not very much pleased by this idea. She screwed up her nose, fluffing her feathers. She didn't want to spend time around a baby! Orphen would think she'd abandoned him while he was on his little journey with the scary cervi. And she didn't want to have babies! That was for big harpies, not little harpies, like her! Casting Liluye a meaningful glance, she could tell her peer was thinking along the same lines regarding having chicks. They were only chicks themselves after all, weren't they?
Tuaria couldn't stiffle a small giggle at the funny face the lovely bronze chick made. She knew what she was thinking. Liluye wanted to get back to the other taur already. So did Tuaria. She had made her own friends and was eager to spend time with them. She hadn't liked leaving Lycoris to his thoughts of how monsterous harpies seemed to him. If she waited too long to visit him, he might lose his courage to spend time with her altogether. He already was wary of her for being a female.
Not like it's easy for us harpies to be male... she thought musingly. Lycoris should be grateful for being a guy and act more like males should. I think he really wants to deep down...
At Kendra's dismissal, Tuaria chirped her thanks happily and hopped toward the exit of the hall. "We won't!" she called assuringly. Then, to Lilyue, "Come on, Lilyue! Didn't you tell me you were going to help me pick herbs? I gotta' go get my bag first!" She waved frantically to her friend.
"Maybe we can find a gift for the eggs and their mother..." she said more quietly.

"I seem to recall being restless and unable to believe I would ever want chicks," Einin mused, her eyes on the young females. The second one was a fountain of questions, curious and bright-eyed; she seemed more interested in the eggs than her companion.

Koda couldn't help but to giggle at Tuaria's onslaught of questions, "Slow down little one! Their father is the honorable old Eadoin, whom I believe excused himself from the party for the sake of a nap. All four eggs will receive names tonight, but as yes, we may be wrong about gender, they will only keep their gifted names if they are so far gendered correctly." Koda took a deep breath hoping that she'd answered all the chick's questions.
"Have fun playing now, we'll call for you when the feast comes out." Koda turned her attention back to the ladies still gathered about the nest. "I still can't imagine having chicks," she mused in reply to Einin.

Liluye almost gave a mischevious giggle. Picking herbs wasn't the only thing she planned on! She followed after Tuaria, she nodded, "Yeah, we should. I'm sure we'll find lots of nice and shiny things. Or we can make a flower crown! Orphen taught me how, it's really quite easy," she rambled off all the colors she'd put in hers, and how she couldn't find any purple ones to go with the yellow, so she'd used red, and what not. She finally fell quieting, hopping eagerly.

"I would like chicks someday I think," Iris said quietly, glancing over the eggs. She had always had some envy of those girls who so easily attracted the males. It was difficult to catch their attention when one was colored in such a fashion, and couldn't hunt. Crafting only went so far. Ah well, at least she could enjoy the company of the little ones in other ways. It was her job to teach crafting when the others were too busy. Hunting for so many took time, and not everyone was a crafter. There were always small ways to make up for the dissappointment she was sure she had been.

"I like to think about it," Einin replied. "I'm sure it's very different, but it's still a lovely thought." She folded her wings closer to her body, watching the eggs and the children wistfully. "I'd like it someday, too." She glanced curiously at Iris, catching a faint note of sadness inthe other female's voice.

A new female glides into the hall, and lands, looking around. Her black feathers where barred with red and she moves slowly forwards, watching everyone. She said nothing, and made little sound, just the noises caused from walking. Her deep violet eyes were looking at everything as she headed forwards to see what all was occurring.

Koda shifted her weight onto the other foot, uncomfortable with so much talk of eggs in front of her mother. The matriarch would no doubt be talking of eggs and grandchildren for the next month and Koda didn't feel like encouraging it.
Besides, even if she wanted children, by the time she was old enough all the current males would be like dried prunes, combined with horrible temperaments no doubt.

The dark lady turns, seeing Koda shifting, and watches her silently, moving a little closer, as if curious. Her wings flare a bit. "Mmm you seem unthrilled, lass..." She murmurs, tilting her head.

Koda hopped away from the gaggle of older woman, brushing by the black and red harpy on the way. "None of your business," she hissed.

"You'll have to pardon her," Kendra remarked politely to the new arrival. "Koda hasn't yet developed a proper fondness for the discussion of children." And then she was moving over to the dark harpy, ushering her over to the nest. "Perhaps you'd like to take a look?"
And so the chatter continued, and the party began, the festivities drawing a full crowd to the grand harpy's hall. Many ooed and aaahed at the lovely decorations, and even more learned an appreciation of the much favored berry wine, many bottles of which had been procured for the occaision. It was becoming quite the spectacular party.
And all throughout, suggestions for names were being circulated and bandied about. No one knew just what the mother and Matriarch would choose to name the lovely new chick, or his siblings, should it indeed turn out to be a he. Still, everyone had an opinion, and Kendra listened to them all, carefully considering what to suggest when, as tradition demanded, Mari came to her.

A brown and white harpy female walked into the highly decorated room. She looekd around with awe, her pale blue eyes staring at the beautiful vines and flowers everywhere. She figured it was something improtant, or course, why else would they have so amny decorations. She had hoped to miss the whole thing, Kalpana didn't have a thing for large crowds and events.
Moving slowly she saw the brightly colored female that had taught her about weaving, and beside her she spotted the matriarch's daughter. She didn't feel like walking over and talking ot them, or anyone for that matter si she walked around, pretending to have her mind full on the decorations, instead of what she was really thinking.

Azareth, as she was called, blink slowly at Koda, then at Kendra. "Mmm... I see..." She glances at the eggs, mildly interestedly at the presumed male, then looks around again. "Pehaps you should call him Lumineux..." She then moved quietly off, as the grouchy little girl had actually vaguely interested her, in a 'how interesting' sort of way. She began to move through the crowd, looking for the little girl or others who would interest and intrigue her.

((Anyone who wants to start tossing names out for ANY of the chicks at this point is more then welcome too. Please specify if you are offering a name for the male or for one of his sisters ^^! I tossed on a bunch of names already so it wouldn't be all empty. X3)) To distract herself from the talk of eggs Koda fetched the small clay board for note taking she'd stashed away earlier and started collecting names. Quote: MaleIridesce Lumineux Acelin Ahimsa Iolani Everett Llewellyn Aisling FemaleAdie Shasa Sofi Tola Zilli Agnes Ailis Katja Ula Xuxa Zea She knew her mother would already have her head full of potential names that where floating around; but Koda simply didn't have her mother's memory.
