I would NORMALLY consider this a repeat thread, simply becuase I have it mentioned (though only as a rumor) in the Official book thread... But I guess I'll let it slide this time ninja Plus you put obvious effort into the first post... so... I'll give yah that wink It can live.

If I had, this sucka woulda been gone yesterday. It's Phandom news, so it gets its own thread. *shrug* You can't deny these people this big a newsbreak.

Wow. Wanna hear something ironic? Eh, I'll tell you anyway.
Okay, so I preordered the book this morning, assuming that I would never get it from the library, since when I had reserved it, it had been "In transit to shelf" since the beginning of July, and I'm assuming you know how books can get lost in the library for a loooong time. Uh huh. So in the afternoon, I went to my book club, then went to check out the next book from the library. The librarian scanned my card, and pulled a thick book out of nowhere. For a second or two, I was really puzzled. Why was I getting another book with the one I was checking out? Then I realized, and I was like "Ohhhhhh...." I saw the gold mask on the cover and had to resist the urge to break out in a huge grin at the thrill and strangeness of it all.
I started it. Erik's mother is so...ugh. She seems so heartless. It's really good so far, and I think I'll like it overall, though I already disagree with what I've heard about Erik being on morphine, and getiing Christine pregnant. Still, It's a cool book.

It's basically supposed to be a romantic novel, Alexis. Susan Kay took Leroux!Erik and added romantic idealism and her own ending.
I'm going to put a more in-depth discussion in the book thread since I have some stuff to bring up.

Yeah. I don't really care that much avout that part actually. It just doesn't seem realistic. I do not disagree with it as strongly as with the morphine part. Erik does not strike me as someone who would do drugs like that. *Shrug*

Alexis Of Shadow Yeah. I don't really care that much avout that part actually. It just doesn't seem realistic. I do not disagree with it as strongly as with the morphine part. Erik does not strike me as someone who would do drugs like that. *Shrug* Well, actually at first he implores in the drug Opium, to which Nadir introduces him to. And then, for fear of his voice getting damaged, he switches to morphine. While I wasn't entirely wholesome to the idea myself, it wouldn't be uncommon for him to use that or even any other drug to give him a gateway out of reality, considering the stuff he goes through. What I don't agree with mostly is how almost every female he meets is attracted to him. While his mother feared and was scared to the point of probably wetting herself of him, other women are like "ooh, I'd tap that!" which kind of proves Kay went wayward with it a bit. But this stuff belongs in the book discussion anyway. *shrug*

You don't see Erik as doing drugs, Alexis? It seems perfectly logical to me. Who needs an escape from reality more than a man who lives in a horrible reality, and opiates were widely used all over the world at this time period.
Laudanum was used for pain relief and as a sedative in households. Mothers gave that stuff to their children, and it is made from the same stuff as morphine and opium. Many famous people of the day indulged in opium. Lewis Carrol is believed to have conceived his most famous piece of literature while in the midst of an opium haze.
