I know of Battletoads and have seen it played, but I won't touch it due to its legendary difficulty.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 17, 2018 5:34 pm

I had it and played once upon a time- but only with a Game Genie. The game was quite difficult for single player. It would be a challenge and fun for two players except for one thing- friendly fire. You shared lives in a pool, and could easily hit your compatriot. That made the game harder to play with two people.

Pooled lives & friendly fire, ouch.
Ah, I miss the days of games with bit-twiddled (Game Genie/Shark) and built-in cheats. Now it seems like they nick-and-dime players for such things. Remember big head mode in many early 3d fighting games?

I have heard Jim Sterling complain about that many times. How games used to have things like extra levels, cheats, or cosmetic things like big head mode built-in. I particularly remember them from the old Ratchet & Clank games. You would get these cheats and changes and costumes for collecting some large bolts. They typically were hard to find, and took a bit of doing to get ahold of. However, they allowed you to purchase the extra content without having to pay real money for it. Games, much like our government, I've become so deeply needing of money at every turn that it's become annoying.

And thus, I am officially level 40 in life. Woo. stare

Happy Birthday, tomodachi! heart

If I ever get around to making an indie game with my voluminous spare time, I have a massive whitelist & blacklist of game design, mostly centered around quality-of-life features; value-adds such as extras like big-head-mode et al are another priority for me.

Thank you, old friend. I appreciate that. So few said anything that didn't get a reminder from the wife . . . I suppose a consequence of being an antisocial hermit.

Ahh, the idea of extra time and money. If only we had ample of both, we could make a game that exemplifies the AAA quality, but supports the 00's gameplay with a focus on fun and achievements that were stable, in-game cheats you could earn instead of buy as DLC.

00s were a great time. While graphics improvements are of course appreciate, the PS2 generation's graphics were good enough that I'd rather development time be spent elsewhere and keep that level of graphics. Nowadays indie developers are making 3d titles with professional-level graphics, so I suppose I'm getting what I had hoped (Hat in Time & Yooka Laylee, though both are clearly beyond PS2 graphics, they aren't cutting edge). Plus, the Crash trilogy remaster and the upcoming Spyro trilogy remaster are being received favorably.

I hope you had a good Independence Day. I got wrapped up in all the plans through the weekend up to the day itself.

The fourth was just another day for me. Worked 8 hours, and avoided virtually all celebration. the only thing we did was watch the town fireworks after sundown. A decent time, but hardly noteworthy.

Even now, days later, I am left with little to remember. The most i can say is that the wife gave me a few bones to play with for Father's and Birthday that were last month. The problem was that it was too little to get a 3p toy (those are wonderful but insanely expensive), and retail has been horrible about getting things on the shelves. Yesterday, I went to a Gamestop and managed to get a few things. Darksiders Warmastered edition was a no-brainer. Older so cheap, and it is still a game I love. Perhaps the first game I have ever owned that I noticed the 60fps on. I also managed to get a hold of Okami for PS4. Been meaning to give that a try forever. It's been touted as one of the greatest things on Nintendo for the longest time. I suppose I will finally see for myself.

I tried Darksiders 1 on PC, but I couldn't get into the combat at all.

The pointer controls for Okami on Wii made is control much better than the thumbstick on PS2 original. I'm assuming PS4 lets you use the touchpad in the center. Hope you enjoy it!

I loved everything about Darksiders 1. It was atmospheric, interesting, and had some really epic battles. The combat was not very deep, I will grant you that, but to somebody that isn't looking for a deep combat, it was just right. I was never all that interested in super complex combat options other than "what weapon is the most fun for me?" The game is an amalgam of so many concepts on top of a zelda format which is strange because I never got into any zelda. At all. Yet, this game has me hooked, and has for years. the sequel was not up my alley as it went for a more MMO feel, but it wasn't too bad. Curious about 3, though.

I was thinking the same. For it to truly work, it would almost have to use the touchpad. Though to be fair it isn't even installed in my PS4 yet. Went to Darksiders first. On that note, I went back and also purchased the Prototype collection (1 and 2) for my system as well. Not as good as Infamous, but in lieu of that becoming an option, I will take this.

I like a broad spectrum of combat engines, from the more button-mashy to Platinum-Games-style; not sure why it didn't click for me. Ah, I don't usually care for Zelda-likes; I didn't get far enough to even realize it was a Zelda-like (I only got the shadow wings jump).
Perhaps I should take a look at the sequel, hearing it's a departure.
3 has recently been doing some more marketing, and it certainly looks good.

Ghosts of Tsushima, the trailer of which looked absolutely stunning this year's E3, is being made by the Infamous devs, if you didn't know. Coincidentally, an anime about the exact same setting & time in history (Mongol invasion of Japan & birth of the samurai) just began airing on Crunchyroll yesterday, Angolmois.

Welp...despite being extremely rooted in Japanese storytelling and style...okami is as 'nintendo' a game as I have ever played. That kid-friendly feel, the softness to situations and graphics....

Not sure if I like it or not yet. Only an hour in.
PostPosted: Sun Jul 22, 2018 12:58 pm

And to believe Clover, the studio behind Okami & Viewtiful Joe for Capcom, later became Platinum, known for Bayonetta & Nier, very much not kid-friendly games (though Nintendo has financed Bayo 2 & 3).

I hope you end up enjoying it; it's basically a Zelda-like at is core.

We shall see when I get around to picking up the controller again. Its not like I am passing it up for other games . . . I just don't play like I used to. Between money troubles, extensive travel (all driving by me), and the demands of this life, I'm not doing well for free time or resources.
