Hey, I have an Imperial Guard army. I have a few questions.. So.. Here I go so you can answer them. Lol.

I have 3 Leman Russ Battle tanks with plasma gun sponsons - of course they could always be proxy'd.

1 Leman Russ Executioner with boltgun sponsons

1 Chimera

1 Valkeyrie

Aegis Line and Quad Gun

40 troops

Creed, Al-rahem, and Sergeant Harker

5 Ratling snipers

5 Storm Troopers

Autocannon and Boltgun Heavy weapons teams.

And of course 2 Sentinels

So.. Now that you know.. You can help me solve this puzzle. My first thoughts were to have a higher ratio of infantry supported by armor. Oh, and I'll be getting some artillery soon. Anyway.. I have found that the armor is beginning to switch up the ratio. And it seems that my army lacks punch and lasting power. How much of that is me being new to 40k and Imperial Guard, and how much is poor army composition and whatnot?

I'm up for any advice I can get. I was also thinking of adding some battle brothers or something. And I was wondering what went well with IG, or my army list in general.

Many thanks in advance. I'll try to keep up with replies.

Just a few questions for you in general:

- What kind of army do you want to run? Infantry? Armoured? Mechanized?
- Who or what is your HQ?
- How many points are you gunning for?
- Can you swap the turret of the Executioner with one of the vanilla tanks? (A plasma tank works better with plasma sponsons)

Well like I was saying I want to play infantry supported by tanks and artillery. But it's a difficult mix.

My HQ I run with now most is Creed, but no matter where I seem to put him it doesn't feel like I'm getting that 90 points worth. I'm looking to get a Lord Commisar shortly as well.

The points could go all the way into Apocalypse level stuff. I'm running around like 2500. But that's fully decked out too.

I was thinking about the sponsons for the Executioner for a long time. And those Gets Hot! rolls can be fickle. And I've found the Executioner to be invaluable for killing heavy infantry/ monstrous creatures, etc. So I don't want it to be killed by it's own sponsons. And I'm reconsidering my Leman Russ Battle Tanks sponsons for heavy bolters for that same reason.

How have you been using Creed until now? He really does his best when you also get Kell, put them both in a Chimera and have him spit out orders at Ld 10. Also, his outflank is superb, especially when given to say, a squadron of Leman Russ tanks. I'd pair this command squad with an Astropath at the very least so you get that +1 to your reserve rolls and the ability to re-roll your outflank result. Anything else is optional really, a Master of Ordnance is always fun and the Officer of the Fleet can make your enemy rolls a wee bit harder, but an Astropath might be the best bet.

A Lord Commissar is good, but expensive and can't hold his own in the current meta sadly. I'm using one myself with carapace, power sword and plasma pistol, but with challenges and whatnot, good luck getting him to survive the inevitable first blows, because almost everybody hits faster and harder than him.

If you want a good, steady army, go for one with say, two infantry platoons, each at least three squads strong, backed by two to three heavy weapon squads with non-mixed composure. Mortars are always good, but don't skimp on autocannons and lascannons either. A conscript platoon of 30+ is also always good fun, makes for a fine tarpit or ablative armour.

Back the platoons with at least one squad of Ratlings, they're always good and cheap enough to fit in, maybe an extra squad when facing armies with monstrous creatures or high toughness opponents. Sentinels might also be a cheap stop-gap weapon, especially when armed with heavy flamers. they will die, but if played right can torch things good before going down.

Heavy support wise, I personally run my Leman Russ tanks either as Exterminators with heavy bolter sponsons, or as vanilla Russ tanks with just a hull-mounted heavy bolter, anything else is sadly wasted as the ordnance makes everything else a snap-fire weapon.

Thanks for the advice.

That army list sounds good. I'm going to have to get more troops and conscripts.. Of which I have none right now. Lol.

If you want to seriously play infantry, you'll need a lot of bodies to fill the table.

That's the key with guard is that they can do a variety of things. Which is why they're good. They're versatile, though you can't half a** it with them.

You either want to go full infantry, with some armour support which is fine. You'll want a lot of bodies.

You can go mechanized, with two small platoon companies, or veterans in Chimeras.

Bit harder to do drop troops with standard IG codex, but can be done, though with the price of Valks you're best off using veterans in those unless you are playing Apoc and have the money to afford Valkyries for platoons. (Winning lottery goal there.)

One thing you'll need to keep in mind that, depending on your points you'll want a lot of scoring options. Unless you've got a lot of troops in a platoon, you'll want 3 troop choices for 1500, minimum and 4 bare minimum for 2,000 points.

We play 1999+1 for no double foc here, and I still struggle with 4 veteran squads that have Grenadiers upgrade because every other option is not good.

I'm a big fan of going almost all infantry as well, they're dirt cheap and provide lots of opportunity to plant special weapons everywhere so you can be prepared for everything. I'd say Chimeras are good for the command squads, and having those 5 fire-points makes them good mobile bunkers and gun platforms.

I just got done reading the Fist of Demitrius and I'm sold..

I want my Imperial Guard to be supplemented by Space Wolves.

Any insight into that pairing would be helpful, since I don't have the codex.

Oh, and I've finally got 60 infantry to work with. I got what I think is a decent 1000 pt list going right now. But I want to take a squadron of Sentinels in with Creed and see what I can do with that.

I haven't played my Guard in a while, but I will be reusing them shortly.

My typical IG composition is a Elite Inf/Armor set up.

I would always run a strong Command Squad, mostly with Creed and Kell.
Sometimes a Primas Psyker.

I field one Infantry platoon so I can field several Hvy weapons squads. The rest of my troop choices are always Veterans (Some in Chimeras) with Grenadiers and Forward Sentries. I run mixtures of Flamers, Plasmaguns, and Meltaguns, depends what I want to kill.

My Elites come in being Stormtroopers, who I always love running for that awesome AP3 lasgun. Granted its range is cut short, but it is still effective. I usually run them Infiltrators to send in some strong Guardsmen to harass and kill certain targets.
I do field a few Ratlings to assist my Stormtroopers.
I even found running a Psyker Battle Squad can be nice, but you need to run the max squad to be effective.

For my Fast Attack, Flyers is useful, so the Vendettas for Tank killers.
Also running a mixture of Hellhounds would be useful.

Now, my favorite thing to field is my Lemans and Heavy Artillery.
Basilisks are my favorites for heavy artillery support.
My Lemans are all mixed, not one will be the same. I also rarely run normal Battle tanks, so I field everything else.

You may want to give the codex a good read first, but they're an excellent choice to toughen up Guard with. Just slap a squad of melee oriented grey hunters in a drop pod and watch the fireworks.

So after playing a few fast-paced games, I'm a huge fan of Chimeras; the 5 firepoints make the occupants an actual influence on the battle, especially where repelling assaults are concerned. They're perfect for command squads or special weapon squads, where there aren't any wasted shots and a better ratio of special or heavy weapons.

Running a few Veteran Squads in Chimeras can be very useful, using that heavy weapons team, and then your three special, That leaves a last slot, which could be the sergeant with a plasma pistol. blaugh

Quite a point sink for a squad that might as well hunker down behind an Aegis.

I tend to agree. Sinking too many points into "high powered" items when you could have a more balanced list with more models and higher shooter points doesn't make much sense to me. I've seen this list with the Chimeras run in person take down Flying Monstrous Creatures, and having a more balanced list is great for soaking up even Tau fire.
