Yeah, I play both mellophone and french horn.
The mellophone is the worst instrument in the entire world... excluding oboes.
I never thought I'd find a harder instrument to tune than the horn until I picked up one of those monstrous things.
If I wanted to play something that you hold upright and play with your right hand, I would have played trumpet! That's my stance.

Thankfully I'm playing baritone in the marching band next year.

i play french horn it is awesome im second chair out of 9 ive played for 3 years through middle school i believe its the hardest instrument to play or to start off with so if i can play a french horn good i can play other brass fairly well as well. i think trumpet is the worst instrument ever its like some one took a melopnone and took out the french horn to make it.

I don't mind trumpets. They don't sound nearly as pretty but still, they're quite fun sounding.
I find I'm the only one in band who doesn't have to tune. Well, I did once, which was hell but I've learnt how far out each slide should be and I normally just leave it tuned.
Ramshorn style? Haven't heard of it, whats it like?
I've been playing 5 or 6. I was first french horn out of 10 at a mass concert band last week (420 people) but I think that was just becuase I was tallest. Actually, I should have been 2nd since I kept falling asleep in the rests and getting lost so 2nd horn played better. I was tired.

You've gotta love the horn ^^ heart I just joined, but I've been playing for what will be three years this fall. I'm first chair out of two ( sweatdrop ) and I love it. I'm still in middle school so I haven't had a chance to try mellophone just yet. Sounds like a pain in the butt.. -.-; The horn parts for Pirates of the Caribbean are absolutely incredible, which is a plus since it's my favorite movie. ^^ I don't happen to know what a ramshorn is, but I'm eager to know.

That hurts me right here. *points to heart* I love my horn with a passion. He's a Holton Farkas H-179 nickel silver large bore beauty. biggrin I just hate those Olds mellophones we have. The valves always stick and they sound awful. sanctuary_of_chaos I think ramshorn means to play really loud and brassy? You've got the basic idea. Not so much loud as harsh, you know, without the mellow, deep tone quality of a mature player. Have you ever seen an early hunting horn? You know, like, in the movies where the horn is curled and they use it to introduce the king or something? Like that.
