Amati's explorations eventually took her into the Spires. They broke up the dull monotony of the otherwise plain, grey sky, and she found herself curious about them. And if she got lost, well, that was part of exploration, too.
Mostly that is what she told herself because she got lost, turned around by the lack of linear streets. Eventually, though, a path seemed to appear, almost hidden; she wouldn't have seen it if it hadn't caught the barest corner of her eye. Intrigued, she found herself following it as it spiraled downwards.
The first steps down were nice and easy, but subsequent ones were covered in light wisps of fog that grew thicker the further she descended. Eventually, she had trouble just seeing her feet. The fog was making her a little dizzy, too...with a startled cry, she wobbled and fell down onto the platform.
They filled the skies. She tightened her grip on her weapon and felt a great and terrible resolve rise in her soul. She would die here, she knew, and yet she felt no fear. She would die protecting her people. She would die, but she would take many of them with her into the abyss. She was steel, forged and pure.
Someone else's memory assaulted her and then vanished without further clues or context. The intensity of it left her shaken, and she had to just breathe for a moment before she could push herself to her feet and move on.
The way further downward was made even less safe by Amati's own unsteadiness. Aside from the foreign emotions now afflicting her, she was starting to see things in the fog: faces, mostly, looking at her with expressions ranging from horror to hatred. There appeared to be a larger platform below her, though; good, she needed the rest.
Unfortunately, she wouldn't get it. The second her foot hit the step it blazed with a bright red light and a full figure coalesced from the mist. Amati recognized it as the person from her vision, but was too shocked to react at first. She paid for her inaction as the apparition swung at her.

The minor pain spurred Amati into action. Although she had fought many monsters before, she had never done so on her own. She didn't know how she would fare, she wouldn't go down without a fight.

The figure attacked Amati relentlessly, fighting as though it had nothing to lose. Oddly enough, Amati felt the same way.

The creature seemed to know its time was coming to an end and fought that much harder; Amati was struck by this situation's similarity to the vision.

She hadn't visited the Spire much, but it too had pretty red lights that sometimes caught the shadow's attention. What truly caught her attention, however, was a sudden pathway that led to a trail of floating islands. Daaiji cocked her head, but chose to walk forward anyways. She hopped from platform to platform, unfazed by the fog until she found herself dropping to her knees.
She screamed. There was nothing left. Everything had been destroyed. Everything she cherished and held dear had crumbled away into ruin. The only thing she could do was scream, so she screamed.
And Daaiji woke up screaming.

Amati, it seemed, would live to fight and die another day as the figure dissipated into nothingness. She couldn't shake the feeling that she merely delayed the inevitable.

As her opponent disappeared, so too did the faces that popped out of the fog. It was just her and the empty expanse of the platform, which led down to yet more steps. The way further down appeared to be even more treacherous, the ground entirely swallowed by fog that shifted into different shapes between blinks. Hands and arms and sometimes legs to harmless mist and back again. Well, she only had one option: press on.
She felt her legs being grabbed as she took her first step down, knocking her off balance. She almost fell, but managed to keep her feet beneath her.
Hands grabbed at her ankles as she hovered in the perilous empty space between platforms, and this time she couldn't catch herself. She tipped over the crumbling edge. She screamed as she went over, falling uncontrollably, endlessly, through nothing but air.
Eventually she felt her fall slow, the fog getting thicker around her, controlling her descent until she was merely hovering. When it removed its support, she found herself on solid ground again, on a floor made of tile rather than unsteady earth. The orbs floating in center of the visible space immediately caught her attention, and she was cautious as she made her way towards them. She studied them all, noting their minor differences, before finally settling on one.
A sullen Daaiji plopped from platform to platform until she stepped onto a particularly large one. She hoped she could take a rest,but instead she watched shadows appear from the edge. She cocked her head. Then the shadows swirled together until revealing a darkened figure. "Oh." Daaiji took out her weapon.
