"Order" is such a misleading word. For us, it usually means PIZZA PARTY WOOHOO!

Jessie spent the rest of the meal in a statue-like silence. When the acolyte next to him tried to speak - it turned out they were a combat specialist - he shot them a single-eyed glare so fierce that though they didn't vaporise on the spot, they would most certainly switch to Spellcasting the next day. He radiated such an unwelcoming aura that two latecomers who initially looked to sit in the space beside him changed their minds and found a seat the other side.

Despite having been one of the last to enter with Coline, he was the second to leave - after her, of course. All of the acolytes seemed happy enough to sit there and enjoy the festive atmosphere by loudly chattering, playing games and such. He had sat since Coline had left like an ominous dark cloud near the end of the table, until he eventually rose and glided from the room like a storm at sea. [[ I've already used this term to describe it in the past - it is very appropriate!! ]]

The acolyte two seats from him looked around as he left, and then asked in a mutter to her friend, the recruit he'd regarded so frighteningly, "Is he always in such a cheerful mood?"

Her friend, still feeling as if she'd been bitten by a bunny rabbit it had come so out of nowhere, sighed. "Didn't you hear? His date walked out on him."

"Ouch," the first girl said, spearing a piece of cabbage on her fork "Seriously? Who the hell walks out on a hottie like that, anyway?"

"I've seen her around the training grounds a lot," she tried to explain, her voice taking on the kind of high-tension, persuasive quality girls do when bitching about some innocent person who'd gotten on their bad side "She's a real freak. She never talks to anyone - not that anyone would want to talk to her anyway. No friends, and when you talk to her she's always so stupid and spacey like some kind of druggie. What does he see in her, anyway?"

"Someone sounds jealous," her friend remarked. The scorned acolyte then did such a perfect impersonation of the Captain's seething look that she laughed. "Wow! Am I supposed to drop dead on the spot?"

"Oh, shut up," the combatant replied moodily "It's way more effective when you look like he does."

Jessie had heard none of this, of course, as he was already well on his way back to the main hall. He'd been waiting in there for another hour or so - long enough for certain members to return from the meal - when the High Priestess appeared in the entranceway. His dark mood alleviating momentarily in his interest, he strode smoothly towards her, glancing her up and down.

"Is the fact that you're missing your shoes and stockings related to whether or not you've retrieved the Overseer?" he asked drily as he came within five metres of her.

"You may tease me when you prove that it is possible to sprint down a white-sanded beach while wearing either of them," she answered wearily.

Having fed the Overseer a moderate dose of the potion - enough to give him a solid fifteen hours of sleep - she'd gone about bathing him and putting him to bed, two feats which would have been impossible without her spells to help her. Having disposed of the destroyed robes he was wearing, she'd put the freshly cleaned and groomed Overseer to bed in one of the Captain's dark underrobes. Rifling through Jessie's things had been a somewhat surreal experience, and she wasn't quite sure what he'd make of it just yet.

As if sensing her thoughts, the Captain asked the question she'd been waiting for. "So where is the Overseer now?"

"Asleep," she replied, as warmly as possible "In your cabin, wearing your robe."

Jessie blinked at her, eyebrows raising. "Really...? I suppose I should feel honoured. What an interesting choice of places to keep him."

"Interesting in that he found his way there before Coline did, you mean?" she probed, tongue literally in cheek to show him she meant no harm. His reaction was disappointing. Disappointing in that he didn't react at all, except to narrow his gaze.

"I assure you that I do not intend to impose myself on the little mouse much further," he answered coldly, every word somewhat clipped "And that she is most certainly unwilling to impose herself upon me."

Lorika raised her eyebrows. Inwardly, her interest was not quashed, but flaring. What had happened there? "Oh. I'm sorry to hear that."

He drew himself up, glaring at her haughtily. "I do not see why one should be sorry about such a thing, and if I may say so, Priestess, I am rather offended by your disgusting implications. I expected better of you than schoolgirlish gossip-mongering."

That stung her a little. Under his gaze, she felt ashamed of herself, and bowed. "I apologise, Captain. I assure that I didn't mean to imply anything inappropriate. I was simply hoping we could share a private joke."

The evening was growing more and more strange for the Captain. He remarked on this phenomena, almost to himself. "How very strange. The very day I remark that no one has bowed to me in years; suddenly, everyone is doing it."

"Usstan fol telanth d'Ilythiiri," she revealed sheepishly, straightening.

For the Captain's reaction, she might as well have turned into a giant chicken and begun flying around the room.

"Incredible!" he breathed at length.

"Only a little, though, I assure you," she continued "My languages are part of the reason I rose to where I am. I was expected to forge diplomatic ties all over the world, to all the different cultures and states, to allow the Order to thrive on a global scale."

She smiled, once again sheepish. "As you know, however, the end of the war put an end to any of the elbow-rubbing with foreign ambassadors I may have been set up to do."

He looked at her strangely for a few more moments, before looking away, tossing his head a little as if trying to shake something out of it. "I must say, I am being reminded of my home more and more often these days. It is not at all a pleasant experience."

"I'm terribly sorry... I didn't mean to upset you..."

"You have not," he assured her, beginning to move away "However, I feel as if I am beginning to develop a migraine. I shall take my leave, and spend the night in one of the chambers below." A part of him was glad he wouldn't have to pass Coline to reach his rooms.

She nodded. "That sounds like a good idea, Captain. I will let the word of what is going on out - not his whereabouts, mind you - and then go to bed myself, after putting him out some fresh robes for the morning."

It might sound a little out of the blue, but I was trying to imply that she knows something about his people's culture. ))

O Righteous Overseer
(( -flails arms- Good night! I am going to be lazy and skip my next post because my headache is coming back. Officially he's now tucked safely into bed and sleeping, please and thank you.

(( Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! So that's what's been going on. I thought when the bells rang it was some battle call or something (not very sure who was the enemy, but that was what I assumed then). Now to wait for the next day to arrive so I can post a catch up post.

Since I don't think I can say anything to catch up at this point, Bapp being inactive the whole time and all ))

(( The note how she drugged him first and then got him clean and into bed is funny. I feel guilty for skipping my post last night, so I am going to edit a little paragraph or two into the post back there. ))
