Everyone needs income to be financially independent. It just means you're not leaning on bank loans and friends to stay afloat.

@Talon: America loves Credit system. @Emo: That is taking an odd scope of things. And by odd I mean wrong. Really, money has no biological value... Hell, we can go as far as to say, people don't either. It's usually understood that the value we place in our money is of our own choosing, and not to supersede our non existence.
@Daypaw: Most people are in debt to a bank these days, and consider themselves financially independent. FI these days means that you can pay off your debt (or are projected to?).

I used to work for a bank that financed private label credit cards. We didn't try to trap people, but it's amazing how many people are idiots and don't know what they're signing. You wouldn't believe some of the calls I got, especially when people had deferred interest payment plans and ignored all the bold notices on their statements saying 'IF YOU DON'T PAY THE BALANCE IN FULL BEFORE xxxxdate YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INTEREST DATING BACK TO THE TIME OF PURCHASE.'
On EVERY statement, right in the middle, in big print- but people chose to ignore it and then wondered why there were hundreds of dollars worth of accrued finance charges added on to their furniture bills that they're suddenly responsible for. A lot of people are just plain stupid when it comes to credit because they don't read their contracts and statements.
We actually did everything in our power to keep people current on their bills and shopping in the stores- we didn't want people falling behind and into debt. If the people were current and had available credit, that meant that they would go shopping, and we made money in finance charges while they paid the bill down neutral

♦ ♣ ♥ ♠
It's not a trap if it's spelled out in bold print multiple times xD
All the same, I wouldn't bother with credit cards. I like only having necessary debt; like my car and school loans.

Traps can still be up front and out in the open.

But then it isn't really a 'trap.'
It's only a 'trap' if someone can fall for it's ploy and mistake it for something it's not.

A bear trap is still a trap regardless of whether or not its camouflaged. *folds arms*

A bear trap is totally different. That's a literal trap.
