What I was referring to is the ideology that "anything is for sale." Granted, some things (like people) have exorbitantly high prices, but everything is for sale. If you want something to happen, you just keep throwing money at it until you get what you want. That has been the status quo for the majority of my life, and this is the world it bought us.

Ideally politicians shouldn't bought & paid for, but it's hard to prevent even w/ the donation restrictions.

Ideally, a lot of things should not happen. And yet they do. People are for sale just as much as anything else, and that is dangerous when the people who make the laws are the ones being bought.

And that's why politics & business are so complex. I used to think syberpunk's vision of mega-corporations superseding governments was far-fetched, but i'm not so sure anymore.

I just wish the rest of the future tech came with the Oligarchy that we live in. Sure, the money will still belong to all the rich people, but at least we could be indentured with better gadgets in our lives. I'll take some brand loyalty if it meant I could augment myself in certain ways. A nice neural upgrade would be something worth getting into.

Modern electronics are unfathomable 40 years ago, especially that they're affordable and so small. Who knows what the next 40 will hold? Already nerve-attached prosthetics are looking promising.

It's a process, and I know that. However, flights of fancy make me want to see cyberpunk come real. Things like a cybernetic jack into the brain, the ability to download knowledge biologically or even just cybernetic implants to instantly 'learn' things. Imagine how a chip implanted in a day might overcome years of study. I also think of implants/prosthetics that either augment people or help them redefine what they are.
Heavy chitinous plates, muscle enhancement, facial reconstruction, Lupine-style legs, and a cybernetic tail . . . A human becomes Draconian.

Given the challenges the Human Connectome Project are running into (a worm's brain took 12 terabytes) and the limitations of their narrow goal, as well as the rapid growth of CRISPR gene editing, perhaps biological rather than technological will be the future?

I am completely open to that idea, actually. The "all roads lead to Rome" idea. Whether it is a shot or an implant, I want a (safe and) effective way to start taking advantage of the knowledge we have. Jumpstarting people on education is one of the best uses of technology I think we could ever attain. That, warp drive, and of course transporter/replicator technology. Really that last one.

Teleportation would be amazing, but it definitely won't happen until physicists can reconcile quantum physics & general relativity.

I fervently believe that replicator technology is the key to a utopian future.
The ability to turn energy into specific matter and back again will mean that resources and food will no longer be finite. Waste materials (like trash and plastic) can be turned into energy to make homes, transport people, or even food. When there is no competition for energy or resources, then much of human conflict will become moot.

The universal constructor that we be at the basis of such technology unfortunately would require massive time or energy to function, and entropy's not on our side. Not saying it's impossible, since we're talking about "unlimited" with respect to human population on the planet, so it is possible though not feasible in the foreseeable future. Of course, I'm always skeptical w/ utopia experiments, since they always fall apart historically.

Even with Utopia . . . we are not utopians. The greatest flaw in society is the human element.

So true; the popular notion that people are naturally good always irks me, b/c it's patently false.

"The universe is moved by three forces. Matter, Energy, and Enlightened self-interest." - G'Kar, Babylon 5
People tend to do what they think is best for themselves, or those they care about. Such choices are made based on their personal information and views at the time. As such, Utopia is also subjective. What is paradise for some is unacceptable for others. Therefore, we have to change both the world and the people in it simultaneously.
