"Indeed," Sir Valdemar chuckled. He smiled at Lancaeriel. "Well, unfortunately it is time for the both of us to retire for the night, I think. But tomorrow we shall talk, yes?"

"Tomorrow," Lancaeriel agreed.

After bidding Lin and Earendil a good night as well, Sir Valdemar headed off to his own chambers, leaving the couple to continue escorting Lancaeriel to her room.

Earendil was curious now more than ever about Lancaeriel's past, but he refrained from asking about it. He wasn't certain if it would be appropriate. She had never mentioned it before - at least, not the part about being a druidess, let alone the High Druidess - though she was quite open about herself when people did ask, he had to admit.

As they continued to Lancaeriel's room, Lin couldn't help but ask curiously.

"How long have you know Sir Valdemar?"

It always fascinated her, people who were as old, or nearly as old as her first mentor. Though she didn't know enough about the time of the Druids to even guess where within that time frame Lancaeriel had her first life.

Lancaeriel had to think about that question for a moment.

"Since ... my first life," she replied finally. "I think I was still a child when we first met. This was when the light and dark elves still lived together. It was he who first sparked my interest in things beyond the norm. He taught me himself, for a while."

She smiled softly. "He introduced me to my husband the first time."

Lin smiled at that, Sir Valdemar always did like spreading knowledge. As such, it didn't surprise her that he taught even before the light and dark elves separated.

"What is he like? Your husband I mean," Lin asked softly.

She knew some waited (like Serenity) for their loved ones to be reborn, but to really try and search for them, she couldn't imagine a task like that.

Lancaeriel's expression grew wistful, longing.

"Coriander was one of the gentlest creatures I have ever met," she said softly. "Light elven ... his hair was the colour of a snow freshly fallen, his eyes the palest blue I have ever seen ... and yet filled with a warmth that was better than any fire ..."

She blushed, her pale face showing some colour for the first time since she had met the group, and she laughed softly. "Sorry, that's probably not what you meant."

"There's nothing to apologize for," Earendil assured her. "Really."

"We've all been there," Lin nodded with a murmur.

Even if it might not seem like it, she knew that in everyone's own way they had this wonderful image of the person they loved. Though it might not always be obvious to some.

They arrived at where Lancaeriel was staying before they knew it, and despite the fact there wasn't too much talk. Too many questions that didn't seem right to ask at the moment.

They left Lancaeriel to get comfortable in her room, and she bid them a warm goodnight, promising to speak with them again whenever they would wish it.

"Well ... that was interesting," Earendil couldn't help but comment as he and Lin headed towards their room. "Very unexpected. At least on my part."

"You mean where Sir Valdemar ran into us?" Lin asked.

She had to admit, in the past it might have occurred to her to ask Sir Valdemar if he knew Lancaeriel, but it never occurred to her for some reason this time around.

"Well, that too I guess, but mostly about her being High Druidess," Earendil replied. "That must have been before the time of the High Druid that Aranel met when he and his sister went north."

Aranel didn't talk much about his time in Altak-Bet Ainul, but Earendil knew that it was because of that experience that he and Tinuviel had met.

"It had to be, the druids didn't just slowly cease to exist they were killed off," Lin murmured.

She still remembered that scene and it was amazing to her to this day it didn't give her nightmares. Seeing people burned alive was not pleasant, granted she had her face half buried against Sir Valdemar's chest at the time.

"Though in hindsight it isn't really a surprise that she's a druid, that kind of magic, learned magic... happened during the time of druids."

From her understanding they had sought to know how everything worked, it was like science in a way.

"I wonder if she would be willing to help Miyuki a bit when we're traveling," Earendil mused. "I mean, I know Daemon was helping her since the plantation, but he's gone back to Gaia, and I don't know anyone else would would really be able to help Miyuki the way he was helping her ..."

He smiled ruefully. "Pity we can't find someone to help Andarien," he sighed. "I'm afraid there's not much hope for him learning to defend himself."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 20, 2012 6:29 pm

Earendil was right on both accounts, even if Lin had her older brothers and mother loan her texts in magic it wouldn't do any good. Lin tried to learn but couldn't do anything but teleport and she was blessed to do that. She couldn't sense magic very well, she couldn't do even the most basic illusions, or elemental spells.

Heaven forbid she attempt runes, apparently that kind of logic and mind over matter was beyond her.

Then there was Andarien, and that was a completely different kettle of fish all together. Miyuki at least with a lot of work could at least defend herself from a minor thug (very minor with minor intelligence), but Andarien would have trouble with that.

"My only suggestion for Andarien is to at least condition him well enough that he's more fit than the average thug, otherwise I think when we get to Gaia the first thing we're going to do, is go pet shopping."

She paused and then added.

"Maybe for both of them, I know Miyuki has Senka, but Senka will always be just a lap kitty I'm afraid."

Senka had become attached to Miyuki now that it was obvious that Lin and Earendil would prefer not to have a talking animal in the same bedroom as them. Which suited her just fine because Miyuki had recognized Senka for what she was, a lap cat who could provided conversation and at least decent clothing opinions if asked.

Earendil gave Lin a startled look. "Pet shopping?" he repeated. "Whatever for?"

He had no idea of pets being anything more than simply companions. How would that help the children if they were attacked? Senka he knew would be completely useless ...

Lin looked up at Earendil and it took her a good few moments to realize he had no idea what she was talking about. Of course the only time he remembered meeting Wish was during the wedding and Whisper hadn't needed to do anything except keep Rhea company. Both Fluffy Cats never needed to fulfilled the role as protector because their charges were always well protected.

Well Wish use to be a makeshift babysitter but most of them had long since grown up for that by the time Earendil met her. And as far as she knew, he had never met Tao and remembered it.

"For protection," Lin replied, "You remember Whisper right? You remember how large she was compared to Saki or Senka, that's because those types of cats are used as guardians, though in Wish's case, my mother's cat, she's more of a familiar. Someone who comments, offers advice and helps a magic user when needed. I'm pretty sure you don't remember Tao, heck I barely remember Tao, but she was a guardian class Griffin that the family use to keep until it was decided that she would be happier in an open area. If you ask Adonaijah about her he'll tell you more, she was his favourite. Unfortunately Tao didn't have the longevity as the cats so she did pass on from old age."

Earendil nodded slowly. "I know Whisper ... and I guess she would be be able to fight. She's quite large. Is that what you have in mind for the children, then?"

He was still slightly dubious, though he couldn't explain why. Maybe because he didn't want another cat like Senka (as much as he liked her, one was enough). And yes, he was aware that the cats had different personalities, just like people did.

Still.

"Are there more creatures like Tao?" he asked, though Lin was right - he didn't remember the griffin in the least.
