Miyuki blinked and looked over at her father. They seemed to be much younger than her, even if they were probably close to or taller than her.
"Okay ada," she murmured turning to join him and the rest of her family.

Behind the shop was not the place where the candy was made, but rather a comfortable looking office area. The back window was as large as the front display window, and in front of it was a long, plush couch. In front of it was a short table, and across from the table were two plush chairs. Across the room, in one corner, was a large writing desk, and beside it was a tall bookcase with many shelves on which were stored and neatly labeled many volumes of records for the shop.
Haldir helped Halaleel to one of the plush chairs and brought a footstool for her to put her injured foot on, then motioned for the others to make themselves comfortable.
"Help yourselves to a mint," the shopkeeper invited them, indicating a small jar in the middle of the table.
Andarien eyed the jar, but he didn't want to let go of Lin's hand yet. He still didn't trust Halaleel. She'd laughed, which had made him feel a bit better about her, but still - the face she'd first made when his ada had told her he was married ... that still bothered him. So instead of going for the mints, he just held Lin's hand more tightly and pressed himself closer against her side.

Lin gently tugged on Andarien's hand, getting him to sit beside her on the couch. He seemed quite shy for some reason, though she supposed it mainly had to do with Halaleel, she had mentioned to Earendil the night before that Andarien seemed quite observant.
Miyuki could smell the mint despite it being kept in a jar. She reached over and took two, one for herself, and one she gave to Andarien the moment she took a seat on the couch.
"Thank you!" she told Haldir.

Andarien curled up against Lin, and when Earendil sat down as well Andarien made sure that the three of them were sitting close together. He took the mint from Miyuki and uttered a quiet "Thank you" before sticking it in his mouth and resuming his observation of Halaleel.
"He seems a quiet boy," Haldir smiled, nodding at Andarien.
Earendil chuckled softly. "Not usually. Usually he's bursting with questions."
"Does he know High Elven well?" Haldir asked, curious. He knew that the last time Miyuki had been there, she hadn't known any High Elven yet, and he hadn't heard either of them speaking a lot of it yet.

"Quite well," Lin admitted, "Miyuki is still learning."
Of course, they had only begun after they left the Westland and between the fact that not everyone new High Elven and Andarien certainly didn't. It didn't allow for the full immersion that Miyuki was use to.

"Ah," Haldir nodded. "That does make things more difficult." He turned to Miyuki and smiled at her. "How do you usually learn a language?" he asked her. "From your parents?"
Andarien blinked and looked at Miyuki. "Yeah, Mi, how do you learn languages?" he asked her curiously. It was a question he had never thought to ask, though looking back it might have been helpful. He had never seen her learning languages, but clearly she had - she spoke several!

Miyuki paused for a moment, she wasn't that quick at picking apart what was said. Though the two languages had evolved from a single language, which she could kind of speak but with effort, and of course Common Elvish was a relative.
Unlike Common Tongue which had nothing in common with the two languages, but having grown up with that language, it didn't bother her.
"First... learn... " she wanted to say vocabulary since that was what it was technically but she didn't have the word for that, "Words first... basic... hello, good bye and that. Second..." she just shrugged, "Live it, live in it. No one else talks but one kind, so you learn."
"We've been a bit lucky when Miyuki was growing up," Lin explained, "Her first trip was sailing, so we weren't always physically moving from place to place, and she stayed in a country that spoke Common Elvish for a few years."
"No Common Tongue, not exist in Amon Darthir or Nauros, sink or swim," Miyuki added.

"That's also how we tried to teach you," Earendil added, nudging Andarien playfully.
Andarien looked up at his father. "But it didn't work for me," he replied, finally sticking the mint into his mouth."So it's good Nana got me that drink, because Mi is lots better than I was."
"Drink?" Haldir questioned curiously.

"It was a gift, from a friend of ours," Lin chose her words carefully, "Andarien didn't take to languages well at all no matter how much he worked on vocabulary and with others. With us traveling to far away places, languages are incredibility important to us. So, our friend gave Andarien the gift of languages, which was in the form of a drink, but I'm afraid I can't say much more than that."
The rest of it would have been overly complicated, and not something she wanted to get into.

"Impressive gift," Halaleel spoke up, her faced etched with surprise.
Andarien grinned at her, warming up a bit to her. "She's really nice!" he exclaimed. "Really, really nice. Everyone says she's going to be my aunt someday. Soon, I bet. Because Uncle Daeron really likes her. They're going to come here too, but just they have to do some ... some ... business!"
"Take care of some business," Earendil corrected him. "And then they'll be joining us here in the city, yes."

Lin nodded but she glanced over at Andarien, that was not something he should have told freely. She knew that within a family affair speculating on relationships was fine, but not something to gossip about.
Then again her family did have this habit of making bets without other people knowing. She wondered if there had been any bets about her and Earendil.
"So we'll be waiting for them, and then stay longer so they can get their visits in," Lin added.
She wasn't sure how long it would take them, or how long they were going to stay.

Haldir tilted his head curiously. "When was the last time Prince Daeron was in the city?" he asked Earendil. "I don't think I can remember."
Earendil shook his head. "Decades, that's about all I know," he replied. "Fifty, sixty years? A long time." He smiled. "But I think he's looking forward to coming back this time."
He finally had a travel partner he could get along with - and even liked. And despite knowing wheat Ruel used to be like, Earendil was certain Daeron was quite eager to introduce Iorlas to their parents. The fact that Ruel was no longer the a** he'd used to be was just a bonus.

"Which is good considering how much he's missed out on," Lin murmured, "I've only seen him twice when I was younger spending time here."
In other words before she was an adult, and not including the Borderlands, though she rarely saw him at the Borderlands too, but she could be forgiven for that spending so much time around Elros.

"Of course, he was busy with other things," Earendil pointed out.
"What did he used to do before he traveled with you?" Andarien asked curiously, crawling up into Lin's lap and snuggling into her. "Where did he live, anyways, if he didn't travel with you?"
Haldir blinked at them. "How old is Andarien, exactly?" he questioned, confused.

Lin looked at Haldir with a wryly smile, it was such an age old question that eventually she swore it might become an on running joke.
"Physically, he's about three or four, chronologically, he's almost one," Lin explained.
