"Blue is probably the way to go," Toby agreed, but when he saw the assortment he was puzzled again. His mouth pushed over to one side and he itched the back of his neck.
"This one's too much," Toby said, pointing to a bright ring with embellishments and large diamonds beside the sapphire.
"More classy, less bling," Dari agreed.
"Can I see that one?" Toby asked, motioning toward a simpler ring, classically set but with a sapphire as the main 'diamond' setting.

"So she likes simple things?" The clerk asked. "Tell me more about her," she prompted. She took out the box with the ring Toby requested and set it on the table.

Toby nodded. Yes, the simple things. Sea shells and holding hands and going dancing.
"Oh, uh. Wh--um. We met on the beach. It was a bit of a chase at first; she's got a real stubborn streak. I almost let her go, too." He inspected the ring and shook his head. "There's too much in the front here. It's too..." He made a motion with his hand like flashing lights. Words were failing him.

"On the beach? Were you on vacation?" So romantic. Young love was always a beautiful thing. She took the ring back and selected another, offering it to Toby to inspect. "So how did you two end up together?" she asked.

"Nah. Work trip. She was a native," Toby said. He took the second ring and inspected it. No, it still didn't feel right. He just wished he could say why. "Actually this guy hatched an evil scheme." Toby nodded toward Dari, who offered the woman a smile. "Distance makes the heart grow fonder, yadda yadda. I ended up calling her crying at four in the morning. Very manly." He smiled at the woman and shook his head again. "Not this either."
Dari pulled out his phone and started flipping through pages. Toby turned to peek but he was at a bad angle, and thus a little shocked when Dari showed the woman a photo of Toby and Maia together. "For the visual," Dari said.

Oh? That sounded like a romance movie. "It worked, then," she observed, putting this ring away and pausing. What ring would fit this customers needs? Nothing flashy, bulky, or large. She selected one and put it out on the counter, then took out several others and set them there.
She looked at the picture Dari offered and smiled. "You're a lucky guy," she said, looking to Toby. "And she's a lucky woman, to have you care so much about her. Try these?"

Toby watched one come out, then two, then three. He mushed his mouth other to one side again and continued mulling them over. "Thank you."
Dari just smiled to the woman and tucked his phone away again. He turned to help Toby, even sliding a ring the werewolf seemed to be considering onto his own pinky to show to Toby.
Toby just shook his head.
"Something dainty," Toby said, "Feminine." Girls like Maia almost didn't exist any more. "I don't-- I mean. Maybe the cut's wrong. The bezels--"
"Toby, something un-bezeled is just a flat sheet."
"Shush, you."
Dari chuckled.

The woman paused, looked at Toby, then Dari, and to the counter. She selected an old fashioned ring, feminine, dainty, and had the least amount of bezels? Maybe? She offered it to Toby. "Are you looking for something like this, then?" she asked.

Toby looked to the ring and took it carefully between his fingers. Just seeing it he was taken back. You know, Maia refused to wear pants unless she had to. She liked going to classy joints and dancing to old music. A smile crossed Toby's face.
"Do you have anything similar, with a slightly larger stone?" The balance was off, but that... was about it. Dari noted his partner's interest and grinned.

The woman smiled and nodded at Toby's question, selecting a ring similar to the one she'd just shown him. "Here," she said. "Its a lovely cut," she added. "Elegant."

The words left Toby's lips before he even got his fingers on it. In a moment he was beaming. "What do you think, Dari?"
The alien came close and leaned over. He imagined Maia's fingers with the ring atop. "What sort of metal is this?"
White gold, platinum, sterling silver...

"White gold," the woman said, promptly. "We have others as well--" she began. But Toby seemed happy with the one he had in hand. She smiled. "I'll get you rung up," she said. "I'm sure she'll say yes," she added, giving Toby a smile.

Dari set a smirk Toby's way. Toby just laughed and shook his head.
"Yes, please," the werewolf said, and then followed the woman to the register. He wiped his sweaty hands on his pants. He could look down the barrel of a gun with cool ambivalence, but a wedding ring? God help him.
"Oh, I know she will," he said with a nod. She'd give him her pelt, after all. "Still nervous, though. Not sure why. I'm sure you see a hundred putzes like me in a month." Except, you know. Not the werewolf part.

The clerk pretended to think about it, looking Toby up and down. "Hm," she said, "I suppose so. But they're not usually as good looking as you are. Don't worry dear," she added, as she rung up the ring. "You love her, and I'm sure she thinks the world of you. That's what's important." She read off the price and looked to him expectantly.

Toby laughed and shook his head. "Thanks."
Some might call her a cougar. Those who knew better would applaud Toby for catching himself a woman a decade younger.
"She does," Dari said, giving Toby a little nudge that drew another grin from his partner.
There was no hesitation when it came to price. Toby whipped out his bank card rather than a golden credit card and took a deep breath. It was going to be fine. He just had to figure out how and when he was going to do it, and then grow the balls to act. Gah. He remembered this anxiety. He hadn't liked it the first time either. Ah! Wait! He took his card back before the clerk could take it and furrowed his brow slightly, but his smile remained.
"Could you apply a resizing? It's a bit big, if you can believe it. And then I can come back and get it at some... less conspicuous time...?"
