Well, we shall see. It seems that my Fiverr work is coming in most handy for the yearly expenditure from the income tax return. Nearly doubling my allotted spending amount through months of saving and hard work. If things go as planned, it will be a truly epic year.

Glad it's making a meaningful difference for you. smile
I've recently gotten sucked into the world of board game Let's Plays. Quite interesting to see the mechanics of different designers & their games on display.

Watch it Played: https://www.youtube.com/user/WatchItPlayedHappened upon them b/c I was checking out Flash Duel & Yomi from Sirlin Games, but now watching some other stuff. A friend of mine hosts monthly board game nights that I sometimes attend, so I have some interest in the hobby. Of course, this is an expensive hobby when you go beyond Parker Brothers & Milton Bradley (Euro-style board games are so expensive and often have expansion packs), which is why I've not actually gotten anything yet.

We all have our vices, my friend. Goodness knows I've sunk a ton both in time and money into RPing over the decades. (crap, saying decades is no less accurate, but makes me feel OLD)
I might give it a look sometime soon. mrgreen

They also don't cover the well-known euro board games (Carcassonne, Catan, etc...), since other channels have done those to death. Yomi actually has a much more affordable digital version on IOS & Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/287960/); I can attest it is great fun, but playing against an actual person is much more enjoyable than battling the AI. I decided to buy this since it was a much cheaper way of determining if I wanted the game, as I still haven't physically bought any euro board games.
Though I know my DM & I will never play most of the tabletop system I purchase through DriveThruRPG, I love reading through mechanics to see how different designers think & handle situations.

I enjoy the rules supplements for the fantasy aspect. For instance, I have several "Dragonimicon" volumes from a latter version of DnD. Not because I will ever use them to play the game . . . but because I adore the level of detail and depth they go into dragons. Not as a mindless beast, but as a thriving society with intricate customs and behaviors. The lifestyle and personalities and the influences they have. From shell to grave, dragons and all their aspects. Biology, sociology, interaction with other dragons. I adore it all.

The worldbuilding in gamebooks can also be a great source of entertainment, though I find it's a much bigger gamble since a lot of books aren't written very well. Granted, White Wolf, D&D, and a few individual authors (John Wick, etc...) can be counted on for good material in that department.

Honestly, I have never subscribed to any "official" story in any RPG. What I rely on is the moment, the story available in that game. If that aligns with the overarching story, good. If not, it doesn't bother me. I take the elements of the racial stereotypes, artwork, and various basic elements, and then play in homebrew worlds.

I didn't mean plotline or any of the elements used in a narrative; I was talking about the worldbuiding in isolation, so when applied to one's own story it does often become cherypicking what works as you said.

Such is how I made my most successful game to date. I used the world from a friend's game that I played extensively in. Instead of sticking to the system he used (palladium fantasy), I did a very loose and homebrew system. Mostly I am telling a story that they are taking part in- and I am judiciously using dice rolls to help me lean a story back and forth. The truth is their stats are guidelines, not hard rules, and frankly near worthless. It gives the illusion of control. The only thing I need to keep in mind is the endgame, setting it up to chronologically create the world that I played in years ago. I set this several centuries before that, and magic just needs to be . . . culled . . . to fit that storyline.

Sounds pretty awesome. I love Palladium's support for worldbuilding, but the system itself can be a bit heavy.
Snow day for me. Since we're both in the NorthEast, snow day for you as well?

Honestly, the storm all but missed us. We were under a warning of 8-12 inches of snow overnight and got maybe 2 or 3. Honestly, it was a tease more than anything. we have more blowing snow making long travel hazardous, but okay.
I loved the detail of Palladium's systems. Particularly the idea that even if you don't have a skill, you can try at base knowledge. Sure it was crap, but you could at least try.

Not bad. We got 15 inches.
Plus all the categorical variables for designing religions. So much flavor and thought put into it.

versatile, and highly detailed. Everything you need to fully adapt and flesh out a world idea. Thus the world I am most comfortable with . . . that of the homebrew world of Sudavia.
