Pademelen sighed. The Eastern language was nigh totally incomprehensible, random gabblings of the tongue. From what he could piece together, the large man was talking about being sorry and not robbing. Then a my name is, and a Western name in the common tongue.

"I see," Pademelen said in an annoyed tone. "Unfortunately, I am unable to speak that... language." His disdain was clear. "My offer stands. If I may be of any assistance, Sir Brightman, merely ask."

Hoshimi looked sharply at the other man, having already decided to take a chance and to trust the larger man who seemed to at least speak her own tongue. Pulling her gaze from the man that she didn't really trust due to his disdainful tone she looking grateful up at the jovial one and smiled before bowing and speaking quickly in Eastern.

"Many thanks, Brightman-san. I am fine.I hope that I did not keep you from your way for too long of a time." Too polite to even mention the fact that a criminal wouldn't exactly give away his true name even if he was trying to make someone trust them. That or perhaps she was too naive to know. wink She kept clutching the slightly glowing stone that hung around her neck upon a chain as her eyes kept moving towards Pademelen distrustfully, she may be naive but she wasn't stupid and had been warned that there was people who didn't like Easterners.

But she overcame her own confusion as to why someone would dislike her simply for being eastern and did the polite thing., bowing also tot he strange man and spoken in slightly broken Western , which was better then her common. "Many thanks, good sir." Not sure how to address him, since he hadn't given his name out.

"Oh no, no need to apologize, miss. I'm a man of no schedules; makes life a lot easier to live," Mick said with a laugh. "Besides, that market will be here for many more hours, not to mention days, months, years... I can take the time to talk to a pretty girl such as yourself." After this, the moon mage gave his patented wink, one that has gotten him into as much trouble as it has gotten him out of trouble; a wink that could signify a joke or legit flirtation, all in one muscular movement.

Alright, so Mick was bored one day and wrote a short story about his wink. Big deal.

Anyway, this wink was in joking matter, and in no way ***** flirtation.

Turning to the other mage, Mick said, "That's right, I didn't catch your name." He then hesitated and turned back to the girl. "Come to think of it, I never got your name either."

Geez, here I am, winking to some random stranger. What kind of man am I becoming? he mused to himself.

Pademelen bowed formally, bending at the waist. "My name is Pademelen, of the northern lands beyond the Spine of the Lady." He repeated the phrase in Eastern; the mage had picked up enough of the language to do some base things. Returning to Western, he spoke clearly but not overly slowly or loudly; Pademelen knew what was considered acceptable linguistic allowances.

How to approach the next part? Obviously the moon mage could tell that Pademelen had a magical nature, but that wouldn't help him explain exactly what a mage who managed Timeflow was. "Alas, I have not found someone who practices the same discipline as I. Suffice it to say that I am a temporal mage."

Hoshimi blinked and blushed brightly, the orientlal hue of her skin so pale as to allow the blush to show easily through. "I am Hoshimi of the Water Temple in the Eastern provinance." Leaving out her family name, which was strange seeing as how important familial ties were to the easterners. She spoke all of these after bowing to both gentlemen.

As the man spoke of temperal amgic, Hoshismi's silvered eyes brightened widely and she nodded before speaking rapidly in Eastern. "The temperoal flux and flow. I've never before met a temperal mage, though my alignment considers them to be closely related to us." He probably wouldn't catch much of it since it was in Eastern but Hoshimi was nontheless excited and it showed in her normaly refined manner being very excited as she began gesturing and seeming more like an excited child then a refined young woman.

Thank the gods Mick was educated, albeit immature every now and then.

"A temporal mage, eh?" he said to Pademelen. "Odd to see you out in the open air like this. From what I've read- and I've read a lot, believe me- your kind tend to not roam in public areas very often, except if there's something of extreme importance..." As Hoshimi started motoring away in Eastern, Mick listened and started to chuckle. "She's really excited to meet you. Apparently there's an unwritten relationship between your kind and water mages like her."

Turning to Hoshimi the moon mage said, "It's an honor to meet a mage from the prestigious water temple. I've always made it a point to pay the place a visit one day; I've read so many fascinating things about the place." Mick found it a little odd that she did not follow Eastern traditions of family declaration, but he knew a lot about being embarrassed by the family name. But he found something else a little more strange.

"Miss Hoshimi, I know I may be intruding, but aren't you a little young to be out and about by yourself? I may be outdated on your kind's traditions, after all, but I thought water mages under a certain age were required to have a guardian or older family member with them at all times when away from the temple."

(( *posts a response since he was directly addressing her* ))

Hoshimi looked up as Mick addressed her and blushed brightly, the watery blue orbs seeming to spring to life before being trampled by some unseen force. "Yes, Brightman-san. Normally that is the tradition...." She looked uncertain for a moment, perhaps as if to decide if she should lie or not but whatever the reason, she overcame it and smiled brightly. " I was merely exploring the city." Not a lie...but not the whole truth.

"I see," Mick said, deciding not to delve any further into this topic. He could feel that something was out of place, but who was he to be sticking his nose into the private lives of others?

"So are you a frequent visitor of Laburnum, or is this your first time?" the moon mage asked, making small talk. His chivalrous nature had slowly crept up on him; he wasn't about to let this girl wander the streets alone and that was that. She just didn't know it yet.

Mick turned to Pademelen a moment before Hoshimi could respond. "Sorry, it feels like we're exiling you over here," he said with a smile. "It's good you know some Eastern, but this has got to be kind of awkward for you."

Pademelen's mouth twitched upwards. "Don't worry about it. It took me two years to learn basic Western, and three years besides to learn Common tongue. I'm used to not knowing what people are saying." He saw the lunar mage's quizzical glance, and stuck out his arm. "You think skin this pale comes from Midwestern blood? I was born north of the Lady's Spine, in a village destroyed by Southeners."

He looked at the apple, took a final bite, then tossed it into an alley. Immediately a pack of street urchins set upon it, fighting each other for the meager scraps.

Hoshimi looked back and forth between the two men, uncertain if she should answer the questions Brightman-san had asked her or if she should wait for them to be finished, since it was hard to tell by the dismiisal tone of the temporal mage. "I'm soo sorry.." She spoke then in broken Western. "This is my first time in Laburnum, my common is no good. Who are southerners?"

Pademelen looked at the girl. "Everyone is a southerner, Miss Hoshimi. Some of them are on different sides. In the North, we see things differently. I suspect that the people who sacked my town were from the West, although I have no way of telling. Truth be told, I do not remember much of my early life."

The three were nearing the market now, and Pademelen heard shouts in all three tongues. He sighed. "You know, I thought I was done learning languages. There aren't any more languages in the East, are there?"
PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2005 7:25 pm

Mick chuckled and scratched the back of his head with his free hand. "Well, you see, the Eastern language has very much in common with Western. That being how there can be many variations depending on what area of the region you are located. Accents, different pronounciations, even whole new words, depending on where you've planted yourself. Fascinating stuff, isn't it?"

Turning to Hoshimi Mick said, "You see, the further north you are, everyone becomes a Southerner, since they are all below you. Truth be told, there are the regions named after the points on a compass, including Northeast and the like, and the different regions of middle of the West, altogether called Central ((Look at me everyone! I'm doing Gaian geography! Hope the guild makers don't hop on my a** for this one -_-)). Within each of the regions are towns, of course, but Central has several different regions within itself."

Mick stopped, looked back and forth at the temporal and water mages, and laughed. "Oh man! I must sound so boring and bookish right now," he said with a laugh.

Hoshimi's eyes widened in a bit of shock and more then a little despair as she looked at the two men as they explained the 'way' of things. "So....because they come from different places, certain people are evil and others are not?" That was what the girl was getting and it was sounding very confused to her to say the least. "Maybe coming to Laburnum was a bad idea..."
PostPosted: Thu May 26, 2005 9:04 pm

Pademelen sighed. "Nobody is evil, any more than a fish is wet." He saw her confusion. "A fish wouldn't think of itself as wet, would it? After all, it's lived its life in the water," he explained. "The fish would have to experience dryness before it knew what wet was."

"Humans are not evil. Nobody thinks of themselves as bad. They're always doing something for the good. Whether it be the good of the people..." He froze time, momentarily, and snatched a few apples from a nearby vendor, returning immediately to his spot and reinserting himself into Timeflow. Twirling an apple, Pademelen tossed it to a beggar.

"...or themselves," he said, taking a bite out of the apple. "That's the important thing. Ah, philosophy and filched apples. You two must think me incredibly boring." It was nice using his powers again. Something about the two made him feel more open. Pademelen slowed down time enough to place the fruits in his companions' hands without them noticing.

"Apple?" he asked, munching away innocently on his.

"Well I'll kindly take a small sample of the temporal mage powers," Mick said, tossing a few coins the vendor's way. "So I don't feel too terribly guilty," he explained as he took a bite of his apple.

"Philosophy boring? Nah. You bring up a very good point. I may be a good guy to myself, but somewhere, in some random part of the universe, I may be considered evil by another. I certainly hope not, but sometimes it tends to be inevitable."

"And it certainly wasn't a bad idea to come to Laburnum," Mick said, smiling at Hoshimi. "Laburnum is chuck full of culture you could never learn from temple teachings or books; you have to get out on the streets and see it for yourself! Why, if you'd like, I'd be more than happy to be a tour guide for you around this fair city of culture." Mick bowed slighty towards her, adding, "And Sir Pademelen is more than welcome to accompany us."
