Since Red Sox are tryin' to acquire Daisuke Matsuzaka Here are some players who were pioneers of this trend It's called From Japan to America Masanori Murakami--RHP (1964-65)  1st Japanese-born major leaguer pitched so well in a late-season callup in 1964 that San Francisco Giants fought bitterly to retain his services. Nankei Hawks, his Japanese club, allowed him to stay with Giants for one more season, durin' which he struck out 85 batters in 74 1/3 innings before decidin' to return home. Nearly 3 decades passed before another Japanese pitcher came to States.

Hideo Nomo--RHP (1995-05)  Nomo-Mania had humble beginnin's -- Dodgers brought him over on a minor-league contract. Nomo, 26 at time, had posted a 78-46 record with a 3.15 ERA in 5 years with Kintetsu Buffaloes of Japanese League. He was an instant hit in America, winnin' 43 games during his first 3 seasons with Los Angeles and claimin' NL Rookie of Year honors in 1995.

Mac Suzuki--RHP (1996-02)  He was 5th in AL in both wild pitches (11) n' walks (95) in 2000 with Royals, which helps explains why he was out of majors by 2002. He went 16-31 over 117 games with Seattle, K.C., Colorado and Milwaukee.

Hideki Irabu--RHP (1997-02)  He was purchased by Padres in January 1997 n' traded in May of that year to Yankees, who paid him $8.3 million over 3 years. He went 29-20 with New York, won just 2 of 14 starts over 2 seasons with Montreal, n' left majors after going 3-8 with Texas in 2002.

Takashi Kashiwada--LHP (1997)  5-11, 165-pound reliever appeared in 35 games for 1997 Mets, strikin' out 19 and walkin' 18 while finishin' with a 4.31 ERA. He returned to Japan shortly thereafter.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa--RHP (1997-05)  Comin' on heels of Nomo-mania, Hasegawa was 1st player traded from Japan to majors. Before 1997 season, Angels paid about $1 million to Orix Blue Wave n' $350,000 to Hasegawa, who was a starter in Japan but has since proved more useful as a reliever in States.

Masato Yoshii--RHP (1998-02)  A free agent signed by Mets in 1998 (2 years, $3.1 million) who also played for Rockies n' Expos, Yoshii went 32-47 with a 4.62 ERA over a 5 year career. He struck out 117 n' 105 in his first 2 seasons, respectively.

Masao Kida--RHP (1999-05)  Tigers signed Kida for 2 years, $3 million in December 1998 but eventually sold him back to Japan. Kida made it back to majors but didn't pitch more than 14 innings for either Dodgers or Mariners.

Tomo Ohka--RHP (1999-present)  Red Sox purchased 22-year old Ohka from Yokohama BayStars in November 1998. He pitched parts of 3 seasons in Boston before bein' traded to Expos for Ugueth Urbina. He has since been traded to Brewers. In 8 seasons, he has a 48-58 record n' a 4.04 ERA.

Kaz Sasaki--RHP (2000-03)  Armed with a nasty split-fingered fastball that announcers dubbed "The Thang," Sasaki was AL Rookie of Year honors in 2000, when his 37 saves were most ever at time for a 1st year reliever. He had doubled his rookie salary to $8 million by 2003, his last season with Mariners.

Ichiro Suzuki -- OF (2001-present) 1st Japanese-born position player to play regularly in majors, 6-time Gold Glove winner n' 6-time All-Star is one of best hitters n' defensive outfielders in game. Mariners paid roughly $13 million in posting fees to negotiate with Ichiro in 2000, n' signed him to a 3-year, $14 million contract. He promptly became 2001 AL Rookie of Year n' MVP. He set a single-season record with 262 hits in 2004, his 2nd season as AL batting champ.
