I can understand. :]
But I do know from history and things that I can trust some of what Amber is saying. She is mostly talking about how Shamans have to be connected to the elements and things, that seems to be very true.

Wait...Amber Wolfe...ok Nevermind. Thought it was Amber K I was going to destroy a few things.

As far as my understanding of shamanism goes shamanism is a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world (source:Wikipedia). The Britannica says the same thing, but Wikipedia is free razz They really have nothing to do with the four elements.

I terribly suggest you read The Way of Wyrd by Brian Bates. It's fiction but it is a wonderful story about Anglo-Saxon shamanism and sorcery.

Wikipedia isn't safe. D:
The Shamans on mystic wicks pretty much downs it down to this:
-3 levels of existence
-journeying between those levels
-healing craft, usually a variant on the soul retrieval concept
-light bearer for the dead.

but I know they used to also tell their people where they could find the best game, and helped them fight other tribes.

However, I also know they use pain methods to do certain things, which I cannot harm myself. Puts a bit of a damper to that, don't it?

I see. Nothing about the elements there though...

Yes, but I cross referenced with Britannica razz

HIYA!! I found this guild through Angus' siggy ^^.

I've been reading about wiccan/pagan ideas and beliefs, but like I mentioned in my join request, I'm not finding a lot that's helpful. Angus has made a library thread that's extremely helpful, but the MPIRLC is not as specific as this one. Anyway, I'm here to learn what I can.

Is shamanism only connected to the Siberian countries? I'm beginning to think that is correct.

Welcome, welcome! Unfortunately the library didn't become a sticky like I wanted it to. I might have to request that.

It's also good to know that my siggy changes lives biggrin

I always say "Indo-Turkic" in reference to where they practice, but that's only what I remember being told, and I may have remembered it wrong.

Also, would practitioners of Tengriism be actual shamans?

The practice is tied to specific groups thereof.

Other groups have proper names for roles we might compare to it, and I dislike stealing from a marginalized culture in order to water down the complexities of other traditions.

I see...so the Way of the Wyrd is about otherworldly practices and sorcery in the Anglo-Saxon path. Alright, makes sense and is still helpful for me.

That's pretty much how I would call it.

~hates it when people call her a shaman~

rolleyes goofball. You'll probably have to. I've noticed that a lot are on at once and then it goes dead and then it goes haywire. I think they lurk, but unless it's interesting they don't really comment or anything.

So far no one has called me a shaman thankfully. Just a witch and a wiccan, irritatingly.

Alrighty, I'm confused! I thought Shamanism had regional versions, such as Native American and what not.
Dictionary.com
sha⋅man⋅ism
1. the animistic religion of northern Asia, embracing a belief in powerful spirits that can be influenced only by shamans.
2. any similar religion.

Is the "any similar religion" point invalid?

People ask if I am Wiccan. I just smile pleasantly and say: "No...are you?"

Sad part is they answer yes T.T

Otherworld traditions abound. They also have their own titles. Call me a shaman and see what happens. twisted
