Lin nodded, "Yes, that had been rather unexpected, and the runed bags ended up with so much water in them because they ended up in the river."
It was a strange sight to be sure, there were.... a few disadvantages to runed bags, as whatever went in, could also get in and wreck things. It was designed to hold things, not keep anything in them protected.
"But no one was badly hurt and that's what mattered."

Eldrin let out a low whistle. "That's amazing ... that no one was hurt, I mean. Usually sandstorms mean death for at least one person. I've only seen a few, I admit, but ... they're not pleasant. Give me a thunderstorm any day."
"Is that what this is?" Andarien called, looking over his shoulder at his uncle.
Eldrin chuckled and nodded. "Yes. Come, close the shutters. Your mead is ready."
"Okay." Andarien reached up and pulled the shutters closed, latching them carefully. Then he hopped down from the chair and joined Eldrin in the kitchen for his mead.
"At the table," Eldrin murmured, and Andarien obeyed.
Once Andarien was enjoying his mead, Eldrin turned his attention back to the others. "So how is the rest of the family doing?" he asked curiously. "Earendil has been coming every morning, but he's so busy training himself that I don't get to ask anything."

Lin smiled at that, "As far as I can tell, everyone has been doing fine."
For Miyuki and Andarien she could tell, but for the rest of the family on Earendil's side, she wasn't so sure. However, she told Eldrin what she knew what was going on and also made a note to tell him about Aranxia coming with them.
"She won't be with us when we explore the continent, but she'll come with us to Caras Galadhon, and make paintings of our travels as we go."
Since they knew which parts were safe, and both Amon Darthir and Caras Galadhon were safe.

"Oh, she'll enjoy that," Eldrin said brightly. "She's an adventurous one, she is. Not that you'd know it to talk to her, she's so quiet ... and who knows, maybe while she's gone she'll re-evaluate the importance of knowing how to defend herself. It's the only thing I've ever seen her resist ... granted, I don't see her often, since I'm up here pretty much all the time."
Andarien looked up in surprise. "How do you get food?" he asked. He knew the importance of going to the city for food - either to buy food to make yourself or else to go to an inn for a meal.
Eldrin chuckled. "People bring it to me. That way I can keep working."

Lin couldn't help but glance at both Miyuki (who was pretty much dozing with Ai), and Andarien before looking back at Eldrin.
"Do most weapons not suit her, or is it just the act of training?" Lin asked.
She knew how that could make learning how to defend much more difficult.

"Oh, she has skill," Eldrin said quickly. "Perhaps not so much with the sword, but with daggers and a bow she's very good. She just doesn't like it. She doesn't put in the effort that really, she ought to. Now, that being said, I will also admit that she's such a wisp of a thing that the sword probably is too heavy for her anyways, even a small one ... but she could do better than she does."
"Do you teach people how to fight, Uncle Eldrin?" Andarien asked curiously.
Eldrin nodded, grinning. "Are you taking lessons?"
Andarien fidgeted uncomfortably. "Well ... I'm gonna learn how to shoot a bow, but ... I can't do anything else."

"Both Andarien and Miyuki haven't taken to fighting all that well, granted Miyuki is a bit better, and now that she's older she's certainly taking it more seriously...."
But now that Miyuki was taking it more seriously, Lin could see that Miyuki had to work much harder just to gain that strong foundation.
"But Miyuki never took to blades, she uses a staff, and training has been giving Andarien problems. Earendil and I took the children to see Triton, and so he ran them through some things he knew. That's how the agreement to have them learn the bow came about."
Lin wondered if Triton had ever met Eldrin, she would imagine so. She knew for a fact he knew Yue, but Triton struck her as the type who would have come up here too, but she had never asked him.

Eldrin nodded thoughtfully, looking between Andarien and Miyuki.
"Pity it has to be raining when you're up here," he murmured with a slight grin. "Would you be interested in coming up the mountain one more time before you leave on your trip?"
He was looking at Andarien as he asked this question, more because Miyuki seemed asleep than that he didn't want to ask her as well.
Andarien looked at his uncle suspiciously. "What for?" he asked slowly.
Eldrin chuckled. "Well, to see what you can do, of course!" he beamed. "Because everyone has at least one thing that suits them and most of the time, that can be developed into something more. So if we knew exactly what worked best for you, then we could really get to work on you!"
"But Uncle Triton already did that," Andarien reminded him. "And the only thing that kinda worked was the bow."

Lin smiled at that thoughtfully as she watched Andarien. Wondering if it would be wise to bring it up.
"Still, it wouldn't hurt for both you and your sister to be a bit more fit..."
Lin glanced over at Miyuki, hopefully they would be able to get back down the mountain, she was a bit too big to be carried now. She wasn't sure if she should add that now that Andarien was older maybe they could try again.

"Fit?" Andarien repeated, confused. "What's that mean?"
"It means that you can run for your life if you need to, climb trees to get food, swim to survive from a sinking boat, and pull a bow so that your arrow will go somewhere," Eldrin replied with a grin. With a wink, he added, "And climb the mountain stairs on your own."
Andarien blushed. "Oh ..."
Clearly Eldrin knew that Andarien hadn't climbed the steps himself.

Lin smiled at that, "Well it was Andarien's first time up the mountain, this is Miyuki's second."
She looked thoughtful though, at Eldrin mentioning swimming.
"Though, since you mentioned swimming, swimming lessons down the road wouldn't be a bad idea," Lin mused, "Miyuki wanted to take some now that she can change her form into an elf, so her tails aren't in the way. The first time she tried to learn, she kept sinking because of all those tails..."

"I'm afraid I'll be of no help to you with the swimming," Eldrin said ruefully, "but I'm sure Earendil would be able to work with the children about the other things. After all, he's been helping me train the Home Guard for ages."
"Only on occasion," Earendil said quickly. "And it's different with Miyuki and Andarien."
"Because they're your own children," Eldrin nodded. "I've seen that often. It's harder to push them past what they believe they can do ... and yet it's a very necessary step. Yes, you are quite right, it would be best to give them teachers to whom they are not related."

"Actually," Lin grimaced, "From the long talks with my family, we sort of had the opposite problem. We don't know what to expect from young children... but it still ends up with the same result, the advice to let someone else teach them."
Triton had already expressed his thoughts, and nevermind the scathing look her grandmother had given the both of them.
"Earendil and I take what we do for granted, we thrived off of those lessons."
She smiled a bit.
"But I know what you mean, my father handed me off to Vincent when I was young."
Granted it wasn't her father's idea.

"Well, if my information is correct, you're going to be on that ship an awful long time before you ever get anywhere," Eldrin murmured. "I do recommend finding someone to train them on the ship. There won't be as much reason for them to resist it, since there won't be too many places for them to go, or too many other things for them to do."
"Do you know of anyone who might be able to help us?" Earendil asked.
Eldrin shook his head. "Aside from you or your brother, no. But I don't know who is going with you, either."

"Miyuki for certain will ask Alassëa to continue staff training with her until we reach Amon Darthir," Lin mused, "I'm sure of it. Also, Alassëa has that falcon of hers so she's the only person on hand who knows how to fight along side an animal, which is what Miyuki wants."
She looked thoughtful as she drummed her fingers on her knee.
"Feng and Ryu will be traveling with us as well, but neither have taught before. Feng knows archery and how to use a tessen, and Ryu knows the sword. Both have their own styles of hand to hand they probably know..."
Though again, neither of them had taught before, except Feng. For all Lin knew, maybe Feng taught Naida a thing or two, but probably more for the tessen than anything else.
"I won't want to ask Shiro to take on anymore than he already has, and he's taken on a lot concerning the chldren. Kaito though taught River a particular sword style using a wooden sword."
She stared up at the ceiling trying to whack her brain on who else could possibly teach.
"I know Halmir has taught his grandchildren in the past," Lin noted from what she could recall from her childhood, "That's all that really comes to mind. I mean, we do have a few more fighters than that, but I really don't know if they would be willing to teach."
Or if they could.
