TJ had left his hometown behind him and headed on his way down Route 1. For the most part, he stayed on the main road, not wanting to get into a battle for a little while yet. He wanted to see his pokemon first. Who would go into battle with a pokemon they never met? After he was a distance away from town, he pulled the pokeball from his belt and expanded it. "Here goes..." He released his pokemon from its ball. a flash of red shot out from the ball and formed into a turtle. The pokemon looked up at TJ and blinked a couple times.
"Squirt?"
TJ knelt down and extended a hand to the tiny turtle pokemon. "Hello, Squirtle. My name's TJ. Looks like I'll be your trainer from now on."
"Squirrrrrrt...? Squirtle!" The Squirtle looked at the outstretched hand and back to TJ before reaching out one of his little hands to touch his trainer's.
"So, feel like walking? Or would you rather stay in your ball?" TJ looked up at the sky. It was a nice, clear day and it wasn't too hot. "You pick."
The Squirtle looked at the ball before starting down the road, only pausing to make sure his trainer was following.

TJ walked down Route 1 toward Viridian City, his Squirtle at his side. They had been following the road, but from the looks of it, they were going to have to go through a bit of tall grass to get past a row of hedges. "Squirt. Squirtle squirt! Squirtle..." Squirtle seemed a bit worried at walking in grass that was taller that he was.
"Don't worry about it. Look, I'll go first. Okay?" TJ stepped into the grass, making a path for the turtle pokemon following him. When he was several steps in, a noise caused him to stop. He tilted his head to the side and listened. He noticed that his Squirtle was doing the same.
