I'm guessing you won't get much chocolate while you're in the Middle East. I got a notice today that I can't even arrange to have M&Ms sent to troops stationed there after the middle of May. Something about excessive heat melting even unmeltable M&Ms!

As it turns out, m&ms CAN melt! Guess they didn't account for m&ms being in the middle east when they made them back in WWII! Honestly, candy is alright, but what the soldiers and marines really need is the fact that they're appreciated over here. Even on our ship, it can feel like our work can seem meaningless at times.
Or just send booze. Let them have a real good night! blaugh

So what can people like me do to make sure that our troops know they are appreciated?
Can we actually send alcohol to troops overseas? eek

I wish you could send alcohol! I'm doubtful they'd let you, though. You can do whatever. Just let them know you appreciate them. Letters, thank you notes/videos, gift items of stuff that'll last, like socks and stuff. I know it sounds lame, but things like white t-shirts and socks and that lame sounding things do help! At least for us, they do! And for food and stuff, homemade is the way to go. Really shows that it's from the hears.
Video games also help, if you have the money for it.

That works if I know the person, but how can I send appreciation to random people who I don't know?
And you do need to make sure I get your address when you're overseas. I'm SO sending you video games hidden in your socks!

That's a little tougher, I guess. I would say use something homemade or videogames or something. Y'know, something not specific to one person.
I guess I could do that. Though I have to warn you, I really only wear a certain type of sock.
