"Thank you, Scott-san," Akiko replied with a faint smile. She laid back down and tried again. She wasn't sure she could work this problem out logically; instead, as she had before, she would just have to feel this. What was it, again, that led her to that world in the first place? Well, it was all pretty hazy, but she remembered coming home. The place was empty, and she felt drained. She couldn't cook for herself, so she had decided to sleep off the hunger for now. She reached the garden, but she was feeling too tired to go all the way up to her room. Instead, she laid down in the courtyard, right next to that pool. There, she just drifted away...

Maybe that was it. She had to release herself, to simply forget about everything. There was a lot she still cared for, but for this technique to work correctly, she had to become completely ethereal herself. She struggled to let go of the memories of her father, her mother, her aunt... but soon, they all faded to nothing. Akiko felt herself begin to melt away...

Akiko was floating there in that foggy state, just thinking of nothing... but, as she released all the images in her mind, there was one that kept coming to the surface. It was the image of a girl. Somehow, it felt like she knew this girl. She certainly looked familiar; she could tell she wasn't just a passing acquaintance. Her hair was pale like Akiko's, and she was short for her age, too. How did she know this person? She didn't think she'd seen her about the village, and the name wasn't coming to mind. What's more, why was she appearing now? She had put her loved ones out of her mind, yet this girl somehow remained--nay, she surfaced, over and over again. This was going to drive her crazy.

Akiko tried to divert her attention. She decided to think about the training itself. The girl could wait; she could always try to find out information about her later. Maybe Aunt Yuki would have kept a record on the girl. Aunt Yuki... now she was thinking about her. She tried shaking her out of her mind. Back to the training. She had to focus. This wasn't going to be easy, and she couldn't let anything get in the way. She tried thinking about the training again. If she wanted this to work, she had to somehow combine her own spirit with the chakra. But, wasn't the spirit made up of chakra, or did she just make that up? Perhaps it wasn't, then what was chakra, and how was it related to the spirit? Akiko's head was spinning. She was still too young to fully understand all this metaphysical nonsense.

This wasn't working. Logic was cluttering her mind with questions she simply couldn't answer, and emotions kept bringing up images that she couldn't handle. Perhaps she needed to go a different route. She tried simply shutting off her mind, if that was the phrase for it. Whenever a thought or an idea or an image entered her mind, she recognized it and then let it float away. Her body went absolutely limp as the mist around her spread. Her vision was soon clouded with that white fog, and she found herself in the same ethereal world as she was in before. It felt like she had no body, like she was a spirit free to wander wherever she wanted. Yet, she was at the same time tied to this spot in a disc-like field. Well, this was a start.

This was very strange. She couldn't see her hand in front of her face. It was so thick... why couldn't she see? From what she remembered, in her previous trance-like state, she could still sense things without seeing them. But here... it was so weird. Was she not in full control of her chakra? Had she done something wrong while entering this state? She tried to close her mind and get deeper into this state. That might be the problem. But, it didn't seem to be working. Perhaps it didn't work like that; perhaps you either were there or you weren't. She couldn't even find the language to qualify this sort of thing. She decided, for now, to simply wait it out and stay focused.

She stayed absolutely still. She didn't think, she didn't breathe. She just existed, and that seemed to be enough. Soon, she could sense everything, just as she had before. As the slowly-swirling mists coursed about the circular area, they crashed into objects. With each crash, Akiko learned something new about the area. There was a sign-post not too far away from her; also, Scott-san was still standing beside her. She sensed over his body, checking him from top to bottom. She began to make out the details on his face, the spaces between his fingers, and more. She went back and sensed over the terrain. It was rocky and filled with debris, except for the spot she had cleared for herself. She was pleased; it seemed that she might have discovered something interesting.

Now that Akiko had gotten the basics done, she decided to see what else she could do with this ability. As things stood, she seemed to be limited by the amount of chakra she had put out. Perhaps there was a way of expanding this circle without putting forth additional chakra. She started to sense the limits of her senses, and she quickly came to the realization that the limits were actually moving--they were swirling around. In fact, in theory, it just might be that the entire chakra circle is moving. Then, perhaps it would be possible to rotate the borders outward. She tried this, but it didn't seem to be working. She could push against the borders, but she still kept moving in the same area... and at the same speed. Perhaps that was it? The only way she could increase the speed, however, was to increase her mental activity. As she had found out earlier, that could be dangerous and painful. She tried anyway, taking it very slowly. Surprisingly, it worked--and effectively. As she slowly let her control slip away, she quickly gained more ground. The circle rapidly expanded outward, and Akiko's attention was brought to another individual closing in. She seemed small and unassuming, but she was also familiar. The more she examined this girl, the more she realized she knew her. This was Nadeshiko, wasn't it? The quiet girl from before? What was she doing here? Was she on the mission, as well?

In the real world, Akiko's seemingly lifeless body stirred. Her lips parted slightly, and very quietly, she whispered, "Na...de...shiko?"

Akiko stopped for a moment. She realized how strange this place was. What was it, exactly? She couldn't begin to guess. Everything was deprived of color and sound. This bleak, barren sight was unfamiliar, even though she had been here before. She began thinking more deeply about this strange village, but she soon found the color coming back to the place. Was this how you got out of the circle? She had been so eager to get into it, but she didn't make any plans to get back out. She shook the thoughts from her mind and attempted to refocus. She tried sensing about for a moment, but she couldn't seem to keep her senses straight. She was caught up in the whirlpool she had created.

With some difficulty, she managed to set her senses straight. She had lost her bearings, so she sensed around a couple of times to adjust. Everything seemed to be normal... well, as normal as it could be given the setting. She did notice, however, that when she hit the side of the cliff she cut off her circular path. Perhaps there was some way to make her circle climb up the wall... but how could she make something as flat as a circle go up? She considered changing the shape, but she couldn't think of any way to do that. Then, perhaps speed was the key again. She circled her senses back around and sped them toward the wall. At the last second, she looked up... and somehow managed to run right up the wall. She couldn't stay for long, so she circled back down. But, the more speed she built, the higher up she could sense. She couldn't get all the way up, though, so she abandoned that attempt. She couldn't think of anything else she wanted to test at the moment. So, how was it, again, that she could get out? She tried thinking about the world as it should be, focusing her mind on her escape. Surely enough, she found herself awake again, looking at the dirt in front of the cliff. "Unn... um, that was weird," she said. She pushed herself back up to her feet. "I think there's someone coming this way. It might be Nadeshiko, but I'm not sure..."

She kept on watching Akiko. There was a strange tension she felt in her body that caused her to forget to breath and keep herself perfectly still. Nadeshiko never knew before that you had to consciously tell yourself to breathe. Sukotto? She was pretty sure she heard that right. It was an uncommon name as far as she knew. So she had successfully found Uchiha Sukotto. The next bit she heard was a little stranger. Look after her body? Why would he need to do that? Nadeshiko wondered. The next moment, she didn't have to wonder anymore, because Akiko laid herself down on the ground, and her body didn't move after that. She was learning a new technique! Oh, then she shouldn't really be here....but her sense of curiosity compelled her to stay. Nothing happened within the next few minutes. Then, suddenly, Akiko's mouth opened, and quite clearly, Nadeshiko heard her name being called. The girl's first instinct was to run to Akiko, and she followed it. Except her body wasn't really listening to her brain, so she went at a much slower pace than she had anticipated. And she tripped too. Oh, there it was again, Nadeshiko's face planted in the ground. Would her stupidity never cease?

The Chuunin could feel an increased level of energy in the air as Akiko laid still after having requested that he watch over her body. He didn't bother to activate his Sharingan, but if he had, he figured that he would see the young girl's chakra flowing all over the place. To the outside world, Akiko's experiences only lasted for a moment, but Sukotto figured that she had managed to feel quite a bit in that period of time, especially since she had pinpointed the presence that Sukotto himself had sensed. What really caught the Uchiha's interest was that had Akiko managed to identify this person, while Sukotto hadn't been able to. To confirm Akiko's statement, the Uchiha turned and looked just as a delicate and pale little girl fell on her face. Sukotto grinned, rubbed the back of his head with his right hand, and said, "Nadeshiko, I presume."

Sukotto had heard of the girl. She hadn't been in Shimagakure long enough for him to have gone over her files, but he assumed that she was at about the level of an Academy Student. He figured that Himoto must have sent her to join him for the mission, as the girl probably had no other reason to come all the way out to the cliffs. "I hope that fall didn't hurt too badly, are you okay?" After waiting for the girl to answer this question, Sukotto would go on, "My name is Uchiha Sukotto, I don't believe we've met before. Were you sent to accompany me on my mission? If so, I'm very glad to have you here, we'll need the help. If you are, I would like you and Akiko to do a little something for me." He figured that it probably wouldn't be wise to have them fight against him just yet, but Sukotto had managed to come up with something. "I need to see how well the two of you can work together. I'd like you to break off a few of the branches that have died on those three trees over there." The Uchiha pointed over to the edge of the cliff, where three J-shaped trees extended out from the face of the rock wall and curved towards the sky, making them reach above the flat surface that was the top of the cliffs. Since they were attached to the wall of the cliff and not the top, one could climb one of the trees, look down, and see the chilled waves crash against the bottom, which was quite a long ways down. It would be quite a terrifying experience for most people to climb those trees, let alone have to break the dead branches off of it. Unfortunately, there would be things much more dangerous than heights that lurked within the wilderness of Shimagakure, and Sukotto needed to prepare these two for that. "I recommend that the two of you work together, as those branches are still quite firmly attached to the tree." With that said, Sukotto crossed his arms and waited to see if they would give it a go.

Aaagh. Nadeshiko really wanted to scream; she really, really wanted to. It was so frustrating. She was tempted to cuss too. But she could never forgive herself if she lost control of herself now, especially after a second flop. This was absolutely devastating to a girl who had experienced training in the art of dance. She stood up to face the chuunin, who had confirmed himself as Uchiha Sukotto, using one sleeve to wipe away most of the dirt on her face. " Yes, thank you. I'm not hurt.". Physically speaking of course. Her pride has taken a large dent in it. She looked to the tree he was pointing at- it was curved over the edge of the cliffs. Though Nadeshiko was not acrophobic, the thought of hanging onto a fragile branch while being suspended over that huge gap was daunting. But the girl couldn't bear to let herself be afraid. She had a job to do, along with Akiko. Nadeshiko looked at the other girl and asked "Ready?" before starting to scale up the tree.

Nadeshiko was clinging to the dead trunk of the tree, barely off the ground, and already she was feeling queasy. Well, this isn't going to get anything done. The swirl of that negative thought didn't do anything to improve her mood either. She sincerely hoped that she wasn't gaining a fear of heights, but looking at the space ahead wasn't helping. The empty sky was all that she saw if she looked up, and the cliff-edge if she looked over the side of the bent tree. Which was a big mistake, because she poked her head over that one side, and was immediately attacked by a bad case of nerves.

Nadeshiko shut her eyes close tightly and tried to claw her way upwards a little and back on the right side. Because she had leaned her head out a little farther than was smart to do, one of her hands had lost grip and she had tilted a little, giving her a spectacularly wonderful view over the cliff. She took a breath to calm and steady her jittery nerves. It worked, and though she could feel wind on either side of her, she was relatively sure that she was back on the right side of the tree.

After stopping short for a few minutes, Nadeshiko mused over the idea of opening her eyes. Previously, that was what had given her several painful shots of fear up her spine, but Nadeshiko knew, as probably everyone who had to do something similar knew, that she couldn't complete her task with her eyes closed or by being scared. Some things can detect fear, and though Nadeshiko was certain that a dead tree was not one of them, she didn't feel like taking chances. She forced one eye open, than the other, and saw only old tree bark. She choked down a sigh of relief, and pushed herself up a little further, having made herself a little more comfortable.
