I don't know how I survived without being able to read Japanese characters. It's so crucial to my studies now.

In order for me to learn at a decent speed, I have to have everything in kana. otherwise I easily forget it all.

Hey other people Japanese, I have a thing. I found on t3h youtube this Japanese exchange student (or something like that) guy's video blog, in which he apparently tries to inform Japanese people about the differences between America and Japan and American culture and that sort of stuff . http://www.youtube.com/user/koichiben I like it, because he uses pretty everyday sort of language, not like a news report with all the technical vocabulary, but its still intended for Japanese people, so its not watered down like stuff for foregners tends to be. My Japanese finally good enough I can understand it. Not too hard, but just slightly hard enough to be good listening comprehension practice. His intonation seems a bit off, so I think Japanese might be his second language, but that doesn't really matter.

I don't think I'm watching the video you were referring to *Problems with Japan's English program* but he's definetely Japanese, I've never heard a foreigner with a Japanese accent that good. His intonation sounds normal to me.
I take that back, he just said he's American O_o
lol this guy is funny..

He said he's half-asian in one of his videos I think, so maybe he just picked it up imperfectly from one of his parents? That's assuming that he's half Japanese.

After watching mroe videos, I guess he just babbles about lots of things.
So yeah, hes not completely Japanesey. I didn't say he was bad, but there are some things in the intonation of his voice that sound a little random to me. It its not like it matters, hes plenty fluent anyhow, so it makes no difference. It just makes me hapy that I can understand everything he says.

How do you keep up with people speaking Japanese?
I've been watching some Japanese shows lately to try to learn some more since I can't attend the language school anymore.
They talk so fast!
I am picking up occasional words though such as 'watashi wa/no", "anata wa/no", "janai", "genki" etc. The basic words and know a little of what they're talking about.
But trying to pick up words and trying to identify what they're saying is hard. Instead of hearing things such as ha, shi, fu, ga etc, all I'm hearing is a jumbled mess.
Any hints on how to learn their pronounciation?
Like I was talking to this Japanese girl the other day and said:
"watashi no namae wa ___ desu" and she looked at me funny. I musn't have pronounced it right, but I pronounced it the way that my Japanese teacher told me to (she was Japanese).
And yes, she was Japanese, not Chinese, she was an exchange student for a visit to the school (here for about a week for a "learning experience")

I guess more specifically:
If you are a really huge beginner, one thing I've noticed that beginners tend to do that can throw Japanese people off is using an English inotation while speaking Japanese. English is a much more uppy-downy language then Japanese is, Japanese is usually flatter sounding. You have to speak almost monotone-aly. If you are too crazy with your voice,it will sound totalyl wrong.
And also, your name. If all you told her was a Katakana-ized version of your name, she would not be able to understand that, Wouldn't you give someone a funny look if they said to you, "Hi, my name is fluhblarghhlf."

I'm like inbetween classes here; what should I do? I'm pretty sure I could easily ace the final exam even though it's only the first day of school for our class, but I don't think I'm ready to move on to the next clas yet. Our teacher said that he hoped to be able to speak in Japanese only by the end of the semester with us so that must mean he speaks mostly in Japanese in the next class. The problem right now is I don't feel I know enough words to make it into that class. So what do y'all think I should do? I have until Thursday of next week to be able to drop the class, then I'm not even sure I can get into the next one.
And the class now is going extremely slow. We've only done greetings and two rows of hiragana in almost two hours. He said we'd only be going through four chapters in one semester! I went through the entire book in about two weeks. Changing that to the time I go to class that makes it six weeks and we have fourteen weeks for a whole semester. gonk
