Okay, this was something I found oddly hilarious. I was downstairs getting a snack, and dad had the tv on to Boomerang. They were playing an old cartoon of Tom and Jerry, when at one point, Tom knitted his eyebrows together. I mean, literally, made a sweater out of his eyebrows by furrowing them together and they knitted a sweater for him themselves....
I couldn't help but think, "I bet Iggy does that and that's why he's usually shown in sweaters and sweater-vests when he's out of uniform!"
Okay, so, about Georgia's Kudzu issue. Here's the back story on it.
As everyone knows, FDR was huge on creating jobs and helping with conserving the environment. One of his things was hiring men to plant low-growing plants to help with erosion since erosion was a huge part of why the Dust Bowl started in the first place, which only made the Depression that much harder.
One day, FDR was at the World Fair and was going through a section that was "Gardens around the World." He went through and got to the Japanese section where he saw the kudzu. Now, Kudzu is a vine plant with pretty, and sweet smelling flowers. He fell in love with this plant and asked what it was. The person in charge of the section told him all about it. It was a popular plant in Japan because it worked well for holding the ground, it was easy to maintain, and grew well pretty much year round. with that, FDR decided that this was a good plant to use to help with erosion.
The Kudzu was introduced to Georgia in the early Spring, when it was still chilly out. (This is a big key to this story, and you'll learn why.) a lot of people fell in LOVE with this plant because of the qualities that FDR had been told, plus it was foreign and rather inexpensive to buy. Even if you didn't buy it, you could get a little off the plant and it would grow the same as some of the other vine plants that we love so much. Quite a few people all over the state of Georgia put this in their gardens and in hanging pots on their porches....
Then it got warmer.
Kudzu grows quickly in Japan as it is. However, the Japanese did not know that putting kudzu in warm weather, especially warm and humid weather, would help it... grow better... and faster. Over the course of the summer, not only did Kudzu grow, it sort of got out of hand. People would leave work in the morning and come home afternoon to find half of their porch covered in the stuff since it grows 7 feet in one week, and as said, a lot of people used them in gardens and in hanging pots. If that wasn't enough, pretty much nothing can kill this stuff. I'm dead serious. Poison does little against kudzu since it was made to survive. People tried cutting up the roots, but the roots of the plant are so thin and long that all that does is create more kudzu. People had no idea how to handle the kudzu and were freaking out. Some had hope that with winter coming, that meant that this would all end. Well, it sort of did. The kudzu turned brown and stopped growing once winter hit. Problem solved.... And then spring came back and it turned and people went, "SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT! gonk "
And that, ladies and gentleman, is why kudzu is now considered a weed. xd If you don't believe me, this is, or was, a house.
