Lin nodded and added, "He taught me high elven and helped me brush up on my common elvish when I couldn't visit the Borderlands. I also learned a great deal of history from him."

It was hard to believe just about a century ago she was a little pipsqueak Second running around.

"So really, if you need help finding something in terms of knowledge, he would be the person to ask. Normally I would recommend the library as well but... we haven't gotten far in your reading."

"That's okay," Andarien assured Lin with a smile. "I don't know where the library is anyways."

He paused, then blinked. "Or even what it is."

He'd had nothing to do with the library in the Eastland, and since the Plantation didn't have one he really knew nothing about them.

Lin mused on that, it had been a while since Andarien had asked anything about the meaning of something. She almost forgot that there were times (sometimes a lot of times) where he simply didn't know what something was.

"A library is a place that holds a lot of books to read, or to use for research. All the palaces of their own library of information. Some well off people or people who write and research a lot have their own personal libraries, or in the case of Gaia, there is a large public library where you can borrow books for a limited amount of time."

She made a point about Gaia since the clan had their own library (granted it was for family use mainly) and of course Lore worked in the public library.

"And Gaia is the place where you and Mi are from, right?" Andarien grinned at Lin.

"You and I," Earendil corrected his son automatically.

Andarien blinked at him. "You, too?" he asked. "I thought you were from here, Ada!"

Earendil blinked back at him. "I am. But you said you and your mother were from Gaia, but you didn't say it correctly-"

"No I didn't," Andarien protested. "I said Nana and Mi are from there!"

"And you should have said 'Nana and I' instead of 'Nana and me'," Earendil pointed out.

Miyuki giggled, and she hadn't meant to because she knew exactly what Andarien was referring to.

"Ada," she tugged on her father's pants, "Andarien is talking about me! He doesn't even know he's from Gaia because no one's told him!"

It was one of the few things Miyuki had finally caught up on, though sometimes it was hard to remember. Andarien had not known a life beyond this world. He was born here but his music box came from Gaia.

"Andarien calls me Mi, you know... Miyuki, so Mi."

It took Earendil a moment, but when it finally clicked in his brain what Miyuki and Andarien meant, he laughed heartily.

"By the Valar, it's time for a real break from traveling!" he laughed. "Of course! He's been calling you Mi since he started talking!"

And all of a sudden he realized how tired he was. He was used to traveling, yes, but not this type of travel for this long. Almost a year of physical traveling, rather than travel by ship ... and now that he was home, the place that felt most like home to him, his body and mind were demanding rest.

"I've a feeling I'm going to sleep well tonight," he chuckled softly.

Lin laughed and patted Earendil on the arm before leading him to a seat. Once they were all seated, and everyone was there, the meal began, which wasn't as eventful so to speak as Earendil had feared.

She was grateful that nothing was going to happen with Ruel, but she was wondering about that conversation after dinner. While Lin had talked to Luthien before, she was but a child growing up and wandering around the castle once month (to them) as if she belonged there. So this was a bit different, but for now she put that out of her mind and to enjoy the meal instead.

The meal turned out to be downright pleasant, and afterwards Aranxia offered to take River, Miyuki and Andarien around the palace, leaving Lin and Earendil free to go for their walk with Luthien (Ruel had to get back to work - legitimately, according to Luthien).

The sun was still out when they headed out to the courtyard, but since it was winter it was actually kind of cool - a very pleasant temperature for walking. As Luthien had promised, there were flowers blooming everywhere they looked, white blossoms carpeting the flowerbeds so densely it almost looked as if it had snowed.

"I don't remember seeing those flowers before," Earendil commented as they entered the courtyard.

Luthien smiled at him. "You've been away for many years," she reminded her son. "Things do change, you know."

Lin giggled at that, it was true they had been gone for a long while. It was strange not visiting people every month or so anymore. Though she supposed considering the time difference it wouldn't make a difference to the people she was visiting.

Except here, she had always visited here once a month until she went traveling with Earendil.

"It looks like snow," she commented with a smile.

"I wouldn't know," Luthien smiled softly.

Earendil chuckled. "Perhaps someday we'll convince you and Father to travel somewhere," he winked at her. "Aunt Amalthea would welcome you in the Westland, I'm sure."

"Thanks for the thought," Luthien laughed. "But your father ..." She trailed off, sighed, and then smiled ruefully. "Well. You know."

That confused Earendil. "But he was ... pleasant at dinner," he protested.

"And it is the Westland," Lin pointed out, "It's not say... the Borderlands or farther than the Westland, or sailing."

Or another world completely. While Lin loved the Borderlands, the diverse race of people both from this world and from Gaia might be a bit much for him.

"I know," Luthien said, raising her hands defensively. "I know. And to me, just as to the two of you, there is no different between us and them. But Ruel is only beginning to change. Things here have been ..."

She hesitated, looking for the right word to use.

"Well, they've been ... messy since the last time the two of you were here," she finished finally. Her expression was troubled. "Things have been getting better, I do have to admit, but for a while ... for a while, I was afraid I might have to leave him. Not forever, of course, but ... until he changed."

Earendil couldn't speak for a moment as he let that sink in. He had never heard of a husband and wife separating, not in Elvish cultures at least. For his mother even to consider such an action ... he couldn't even imagine what his father could have done to lead to that point.

Lin blinked at that, because it took her a moment to process what Luthien was saying. She had always assumed that when they weren't around (or rather when she wasn't around) Ruel just went on with his life and pretended as if she and the rest of Gaia didn't exist.

There were days she figured he would be happy if that was the case.

Though she supposed, looking at Earendil, it would be hard to ignore her if she became part of the family.

"This... wouldn't have anything to do with our relationship would it?" Lin asked softly.

Luthien shook her head. "It seemed that way at first," she murmured. "I thought that was what it was. But the two of you had been gone for a while by that time, and he was only growing worse, not better ... I still don't understand it. For a while, I slept with Aranxia at night ... and then one day, all of a sudden, he was different. It was as if he were a completely different person. He started being the person he had used to be, the man I first fell in love with."

She smiled. "I don't know what happened, or how it happened, but he is changing. Everyone has noticed it. And I know he still has some difficulties, but he is getting better."

"To be honest," Earendil admitted, finding his voice back again, "I was quite surprised that dinner went so well. I expected a scene, like when Aunt Elnara first came back to visit."

"It was actually a toss up for myself, because your father was very nice to Luk when he was last here."

And she knew for a fact that Ruel knew Luk wasn't a full elf so there was hope.

"Well... give him time, and I know I've been saying this since I was a child, but he'll get use to us."
