Dari seemed especially happy with the cake. She beamed. Good! She'd hoped he would. "Toby helped," She said.
Cody took a bite of his cake. He paused, savored it, and looked to Toby and Maia in surprise. "You guys ought to open your own bakery. Wow."

Dari gave Toby a thankful look and Toby offered a nod and a wink in return while he took his first bite. Ah, Maia had learned well!
"We have a lot of our parents' old recipes," Dari said, looking to Toby. Toby smiled slow and sweet.
"We do."

"Really? They must have been incredible cooks," Cody said, and took another bite of his cake. "Secret family recipes?" he asked. "Do you have a favorite, Dari?" He wasn't much on cooking: he could make things out of a box, but when it came to doing things from scratch like his mother could, he failed.
Maia dug into her own plate.

Dari shook his head. "The first one I learned was the pancakes, though."
Not too long ago, actually. He knew from the nostalgic smile on Toby's face that the werewolf was getting the warm fuzzies, and it made Dari smile as well.

Cody smiled. "I can only make cookies," he admitted. "Mom made them so often and gave them as gifts so often I don't think it would've been possible to grow up without knowing how to make them."
After cake, Cosy looked to Dari. "Want to show me some of your artwork?" he asked.

"They're good cookies, though," Dari said with a nod.
Once cake was over, Cody turned to Dari. The alien nodded, unafraid to share whatever Cody might like to see. He could explain away any questions the man might have about suspicious paintings.
"Sure. Come on."
Toby watched them go. In love, it seemed, but not unlike two kids.
Downstairs, Dari turned on the light and turned around in a circle.
"What do you want to see?"

Cody followed Dari down the stairs. He took Dari's hand. "What do you want to show me?" he asked. "Do you have a favorite?"

Hmm.
"Mm... no. I don't think so," Dari said, "at the time they all have a purpose to serve. I paint for therapy. ...and for gifts, I suppose, although that was more like Maia took a shine to something I was painting and put it up on her wall. After I'd offered it, of course." But they weren't going to invade Toby and Maia's bedroom to see it.
"A lot of them are just... realism..."

"I can see her doing that," Cody chuckled, shaking his head. He didn't know the woman well. But she seemed the type to want to keep something pretty.
A painting caught his eye; the vivid colors of it did. "When did you paint this?" he asked.

"Hum?" Dari turned and followed Cody's gaze. "You can touch them, you know," he said with a laugh and then picked the painting up and dusted it off lightly.
"Ah. We were flying over Holland, over the tulip fields. It was beautiful." He smiled. "I had to make up the perspective a bit. We never got to actually walk through, but I do know what a tulip looks like and we did fly over the mountains." He tapped his temple. "Comes in handy."

Holland. Dari really had been everywhere, hadn't he? "It's beautiful," he admired. "What did you do in Holland?" he asked, teasing. By this point, he knew the answer. Top secret stuff! Another painting caught his eye, and He picked it up. It didn't look entirely earthy.

"Things," Dari said, smiling over at Cody. He watched Cody move to another painting that had come from his inherited memories. It was his home planet, lush in a way humans could never comprehend, life beyond imagination, and this painting was of his people in a vendors' square. The forms were not human, although they did have forms of locomotion in nubs or leg-like limbs, and some had what could be called "fingers" and "arms" but none in the orientation a human may expect. Some had one eye, some many. He smiled softly looking at it.

"What are they?" Cody asked, fascinated. He studied the picture for alongmoment before looking to Dari. "Did you make these up?" He asked. Aliens or some kind of magical creature. "Do you write, then?"

"No, I don't write. I just paint," Dari replied, "They're, um. People. From another planet completely unlike our own, evolved completely unlike us. I've painted them and their world here and again."

Cody turned from the painting to Dari. "Tell me about them," he said. A made up race of aliens! Dari was clever, and creative. "They're really neat," He added, smiling at him. "They all look different."
