Well technically it wasn't his birthday, but with all those life stages the actual date was sort of foggy. 03/30 had just been a fun number combination.
"Yeah, we've got a handle on it," Toby said with a grin.
"Right. Sorry. Habit. Thank you again for coming."

Cody took Dari's hand and squeezed it. "Yiure adorable," he said. So polite and thoughtful, even on his birthday.
Maia set the glasses in front of them. "Here," she said, cheerfully. Fruit juice, some soda and ice!

Dari took the punch and gave Maia a kiss on the cheek, then turned back to Cody to clink glasses.
"Go ahead and sit down," Toby urged. Dari wasn't used to having someone next to him at his spot at the table and he was smiling like a dope when Cody joined him. The food came in and was set out before them and Dari even went so far as to bite his lower lip in excitement. Toby could only grin at him.
"So, is there anything new and exciting?" Toby asked as he set down the bowl of pasta salad and appropriate utensils.

Cody sat next to Dari, smiling at the guy's enthusiasm. He nudged Dari gently with his elbow. "Tell him," he said. Toby wanted something exciting? A mission to find Dari's birthday present sounded close enough.

Dari had his cup to his lips, and his brows shot up. What? Tell him what?
"Hm?" Oh! Right! "Cody bought me a star. Well. To name a star. We're going to go find it later."
Toby couldn't help but smile back as Dari beamed. "That sounds pretty neat."
Dari nodded. "I'm excited."
"What did you name it?"
"We haven't decided yet."

"We're going to go find it later, and then decide," Cody was beaming. "What about you? You guys and your exciting secret jobs."
"Its boring, really," Maia said, as she offered Toby a glass of punch. "Paperwork. All the time."

Toby snickered as he sat down and accepted the glass.
"There is a lot of paperwork and red tape, of course," Toby said with a shrug, "I can't really tell you what we do, but it hadn't been especially exciting lately." That was why they all had their projects separate from field work.
Dari nodded. "It's true. This is just about the most exciting thing to happen all week."

That made sense, Cody thought. Dari hadn't had to go anywhere in the two months he'd been dating him. "Then we'll have to make it extra special," He said, looking to Dari. Where would they go in the time they had before it got dark? He still hadn't decided.
Maia sat next to Toby. "You guys can make your plates," she said.

Dari smiled at Cody, and Toby was something familiar in their gazes, but it was hard to admit to. How could they already be in love?
"Are you sure? I can--" Dari began. Toby gave him a look with an arched brow.
"Right. My birthday. Come on, Cody. You can go first." He took Cody by the hand and led him to the kitchen.

Cody followed happily. He looked around the kitchen, and then to Dari. "Why don't you go first?" He suggested, leaning close to give Dari a peck on the cheek. "Birthday boy."

Dari smiled. It was only his birthday because nobody could say for sure when he had actually gained sentience, or when 'life' happened for a humanoid, if it did, before sentience. It was better than the date of the crash, though. Much better.
He chose his sandwich and grabbed some pasta salad and then came back to the table with Cody to eat. He had never had this sort of pasta salad. It was exciting.

After lunch, it was cake time! Maia hadn't put any candles in; instead offering Dari a knife and a kiss on the cheek. "Want us to sing?" she asked.

"No, no," Dari said with a chuckle. He waved a hand dismissively and took the knife in the other. He leaned down to smell the cake and then made to cut into it.
"Make a wish!" Toby said.
Dari paused, then kept cutting. What kind of cake was it?

"What'd you wish for?" Cody asked, slipping an arm around Dari's waist. He looked over his love's shoulder. "Wait, don't tell me. Not until it comes true."

"Exactly," Dari said, leaning his head into Cody's. He cut the first slice and set it on a plate, then went about cutting a piece for everyone in the room. He licked the knife then and hummed.
"This is good!" The cake was moist and sweet, the strawberries fresh and texturally interesting, and the whipped icing, oh yes! "Thank you." He leaned up and kissed Maia on the cheek.
