Yes! twisted Well, in due time really. Just two more Mantis, an Enginseer and a pack of servitors and I've got my very own Emperor's Rain artillery battery with that awesome "Alpha Strike" ability. surprised Maybe later I'll steal seven Russ tanks from Mel and field my very own "Mailed Fist" tank command, Pask is a beast!

Okay, okay. So there's this dude I play 40k with. Let's call him Michael - Because that's his name. The only dude I play 40k with. And in all the years we've been playing and known each other (about 10) I've beaten him like.. 3 times. And then only by a default or slim advantage.
But we played a 500pter yesterday. He had Nids with the new codex. I had Guard. A Veteran army.
- 4 vet squads + command 1 - 3 flamers 2 - Heavy Bolter and flamer 3 - Mortar and G launcher 4 - Flamer and G launcher Command - Basic 5 man squad with Flamer and G launcher All with carapace.
He had some sort of mini tyrant thing and two squads of 3 Warriors, one squad having wings. Plus 3 swarms of gaunts (2 termas, 1 Homo).
It was a capture and hold game. He got a swarm of homo gaunts on the central objective pretty quickly, but by the time he'd got any gaunts up to the upper most objective he had only one gaunt left due to grenade launchers and a mortar attack. So I fired a heavy bolter at it.. missed.. and then fired the only lasgun left in range at it, and took it out. : D
I took out two Guards with a mix of Mortar and grenade launcher, and finished most of his other two gaunt swarms off with a mix of flame and lasgun.
By the time we got to the 6th turn and had to roll to carry on, he had to go or he'd miss his bus connection (and nearly did anyway).
It was a pretty obvious win for me, because he only started killing my guys at the 4th turn, and then by the end of it I'd lost about 10 guys between two squads.
I was also firmly on two objectives and heading for a third whilst he had nothing left to capture with, the best he could have hoped for was the game to carry on long enough to get onto all my guys, which would have had to have meant the dice gods were against me, considering I had two flamers, two grenade launchers, a mortar, a heavy bolter and about a bazillion lasguns already in range and sight of his remaining guard.
It was so awesome. : D I didn't realise Guard could be so devastating just as infantry.

vets have bs4 which counts a lot, add to this plethora of special/heavy weapons and top it off with orders... all-infantry guard is no longer a joke, especially with the amount of heavy weapons it can take via platoon organisation

Oh aye. Though I didn't use orders.
But the last time I actually played Guard was two editions ago I think, so I'm a bit out of it.

I think I played 3 games before I started using order. I believe at that point my steak of beating down people at the store mercilessly began.
Marcus is just follow a classic plan. Master the basics, then go for the advanced stuff.

Marcus McFlufferson 'Read the codex'? What tomfoolery is this you speak of? He's our resident captain obvious, sometimes he comes with gems of wisdom, other times.. not so much. A bit like "He's got a lot of hit points, so you've got to hit him a lot."

It is an Apocalypse formation, but yes, if I were to drop the first Vanquisher I could still field all three squadrons along with a crapton of infantry platoons.
It's all part of the long-term big plan. sweatdrop
13th Cadian Rifles (Infantry), 30th Cadian armour (tanks and artillery), Cadian 1st heavy armour (super-heavies).
