...oh. Well there you go. Toby might have been offended were it not totally believable for Dari to forget or understate the date.
"It's his birthday," Toby said with a chuckle, "Sorry for the late notice, I just assumed you knew."

His birthday. Cody could've smacked himself. Why hadn't he realized that'd been what Toby had hinted at? "Thank you for telling me," he said, once he'd recovered. He was panicking; What did he buy Dari? What would be special enough?
"So you're having a party? Maybe I can do something with him in the afternoon?" Four days. Four days to find the perfect activity. The perfect gift.

"Sort of. I mean, yeah, I guess. We don't really do presents or anything, just food." This would be the first birthday Dari had where he could actually taste his cake, and his first with a significant other. It was special.
"Sure. We can do lunch and then you can have him."

Right, right. Toby and Maia liked cooking as much as the people on the food network. "Alright," he agreed. "That'll give me time to get things set up. Thanks, Toby."

"Sure, no problem. Do you want me to keep you a secret?" Toby asked. He liked the kid well enough. If he wanted to surprise Dari, let him. That didn't mean he wholly approved of another sleepover, but he and Dari had talked about that sort of thing.

"Okay," Cody agreed, smiling. He'd surprise Dari, that'd be fun. Maybe take him to laser tag? ...No, that was too kiddish. Maybe the mountain again? Hm... What would Dari like most?

Oh. Right. He was still on the phone. "See you Saturday!" he chimed. "Bye, thanks again for calling, Toby."

"See ya!" What an odd duck, that one. Well. He probably thought they were strange too. With that done he tucked his phone away and headed back out with the others.

F***. It was Saturday and Cody still had no idea where to take Dari for his b8rthday. They'd been together two months, and while he knew things were moving faster than they usually did, he was in love with the guy. It had to be somewhere special. Something they could do that was worth remembering as long as Dari would remember it.
He knocked on the door, shifting awkwardly.

Toby answered the door and smiled. "Hey." He turned back into the house. "Dari, can you sign for this?"
"What? Sure." Dari came into view, and as soon as he saw Cody he grinned. "Cody!" Toby stepped out of the way so the couple could embrace, and Dari leaned in for a kiss.

Cody wrapped his arms around Dari and returned the kiss. He let it linger, and pulled back reluctantly. "Happy birthday, love," he said, smiling.

"Thank you," Dari said. "I didn't know you were coming!" He took Cody's hand and dragged him inside, then closed the door behind them. "I'm glad you came."

"I wanted to surprise you! Hey, where's your room? I want to give you something." In private. The gift was cheesy, and something silly--but he thought Dari would like it. Besides, he had something else waiting in the car.

"Upstairs. Come down, though. I want to show you my paintings." Dari began to lead the young man down to the basement. Toby smiled and shook his head as they disappeared.
Downstairs was the same scene as usual, paintings stacked against the walls of various types, and one on a canvas that appeared to be the start of a painting of two rather recognizable figures.
